  1. Fawkes is indeed a great theme, really quite beautifully composed, but I have to give my vote to Rey's theme. The two themes aren't in any way comparable, as they express different colors, but Rey's theme is more richly explored within its respective score. EDIT: So, four of us have claimed Rey's, but only two votes recorded. Vote people!
  2. Admittedly, I was a bit perplexed at how everyday folk seemed to go ape shit over the score last year.
  3. Not every score needs to work on its own outside the source as a great listening experience. After the great main title music for Stranger Things, I never noticed the score watching the actual show. Seems appropriate and unobtrusive.
  4. Trailer is seriously good for that movie. My interest is thoroughly piqued.
  5. Yeah, great, I knew about this, where are you comments about The Wind Rises.
  6. I'm still waiting to catch season 10, which hasn't become available on free streaming with my Amazon Prime subscription yet. I will probably miss Capaldi more than I can imagine. I've loved his Doctor. I really wish I had more time to spend with him and Clara. Great chemistry, and reinvigorated me after the rather inconsistent and somewhat tiresome Matt Smith years.
  7. The only digital score that I bought was the Jurassic Park expansion a few years ago. All others are physical media. I've never sold off, destroyed, discarded, or otherwise removed any CDs from my collection. I own up to the things I own, even if there are ones I most definitely will never listen to again. If anything, it's a sign of where I've been and were I'm going (statement perhaps unnecessarily philosophical). I did witness a friend set fire to a CD once about 18 years ago because it was so awful. That's extreme.
  8. Handful of good cues makes it worth a listen or two. 3 out of 5 seems fair for the overall. It's nice to hear something a bit different than his usual output. Every now and then I'll get an urge to listen to a piece from it, like the first rate "Hell's Kitchen", the refreshing "Saying the Rosary", or the near-rock of "The Football Game".
  9. Just listened to it. Wonderfully elegant, and such a well-constructed piece for something under 10 minutes. I share in Mutter's thirst that this be extended, even just a bit. I feel like there's even more territory for Williams to explore in that little world he's created with those colors.
  10. Bizarrely, I did not see any of these developments for "Markings" over the last few months. I will listen to it the moment I get back home. It was interesting reading Mutter's comments about wanting a longer piece, she's definitely not shy about hiding her desire for a more significant work.
  11. Although I have seen a handful of these concerts myself, Jaws isn't one of them, and it's my favorite movie of all time. My jealousy exist on several levels.
  12. You can thank Ewan McGregor for that. The rest of it is an overly staged hodgepodge of boring mini-battles riddled with weird dialogue moments like "From my point of view the Jedi are evil" and "I have the high ground". For me, ROTS probably has two of the least interesting and ineffective duels in the series, the aforementioned Mustafar one, and the Grievous one.
  13. The first thing I thought of was that second half of "Anakin's Dark Deeds", one of my all-time favorite parts of the prequel scores, and even in Star Wars in generally, musically speaking. Obviously I'm not alone in that.
  14. I would compare the prequel trilogy to being kicked in the balls, kicked in the taint, and kicked in the asshole. I don't want to be kicked in any of those three places, they're all terrible locations for a precision kick, but I would certainly still rank them in order of preference if I was forced.
  15. I don't have any traditions, but I on occasion I would go over a friend's house and watch really bad "horror" movies, like Silent Night, Deadly Night 2 or Trolls 2. Tried to make it a tradition but it never panned out.
  16. Elfman didn't even try to pretend he wasn't during his interview about the Williams theme.
  17. I like that they added a water splash behind Aquaman, just in case you weren't entirely sure.
  18. Although Oz came first, it's hard to argue against The Sopranos being the more influential of the two in terms of a larger fan base, and prompting a more immediate response from other network/cable stations to step up their game.
  19. In my haste last year, I did say that TFA was probably ahead of Jedi, and my favorite after Empire. Now that the dust has settled, and I can reign in my own subjective feelings about the scores, I would probably lower it a couple of pegs and list the OT scores as the first three, then TPM, then TFA, giving a slight edge to TPM. Admittedly I haven't listened to it in a while, but I have to recall my first impressions, as well as a recent listen-though, and confirm reconfirm it is a brilliant score, especially on a pure musical level. That being said, Rey's theme is the best thing between the two, and Jedi Steps alone is enough to almost flip flop the two scores in my mind. Things can still change should I hear a complete score presentation of TFA.
  20. With CE3K, JFK and Towering Inferno coming up at some point in the next year (I'm guessing), I'm not assuming anything else big in the next couple of months. I'm sure there'll be other surprises coming up in 2018, but I think we're done with grand releases for Williams this year.
  21. They're on sale now to subscribers only, which is why it prompted the code. They don't have an ETA on the public sale yet, it just says "Single tickets will go on sale to the general public at a later date"
  22. Yet again with the Philadelphians. https://philorch.org/press-room/news/philadelphia-orchestra-announces-newly-added-benefit-concert-featuring-john-williams#/ http://www.philly.com/philly/entertainment/arts/philadelphia-orchestra-adds-john-williams-concert-20171017.html
  23. Dishwalla, "And you think you know what life's about" This probably seems rather random, but out of all the stuff in my rock/non-classical collection, this one is one of a handful that I've repeatedly listened to since I purchased it. For this album, that's close to 20 years. Strangely, this is not a band that I even adore. I own one other CD, Opaline, but don't listen to it. They had a big hit in the early 90s that I liked, but never pursued them until I heard the lead single from this, their second release. It just hit a nerve musically. Most of the time it seems people latch onto certain albums because of lyrical content, but not for me. This, in my opinion, contains a stretch of songs from beginning to end that is almost impossibly solid and consistent in quality. Each has a unique character. It's bizarre to be so enamored with an album that no one ever talks about. If someone asked me to make a top 10 list of the best CDs in the last 30 years I would seriously put this on it, and people would look at me like I have antlers growing out of my head.
  24. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (LLL) by Shearmur. First time hearing this one. I threw this one in the cart when I bought E.T., thinking "why the hell not". The first time through I enjoyed it, but it caught me more on the second run through. Nicely composed with some scattered themes, though, outside the main Sky Captain theme, I didn't feel they were used enough. Fun score, will definitely come back to it soon after I let it stew in my brain for a while. Independence Day (LLL) by Arnold. One of my favorite scores now, and after only listening to it for the first time last year. After Sky Captain I was really in the mood to listen to it again. Amazing piece of writing, brilliant leitmotif-driven score with several memorable themes, nicely orchestrated by Dodd. Say what you will about the movie, and I am not exactly a fan either, it certainly provided a good structure to write a great score.
