Matt C 454
Neat. It's gratifying to see the composer conduct the live-to-picture score performance.... didn't know he wanted to do it.
OneBuckFilms 319
Well THIS is a turn of events. I almost went to the one he was going to do for Titanic before, but he cancelled.

filmmusic 1,829
Is it easy to handle synths in such live performances?I mean I thought the synth parts have post-processing on them etc. with various effects..
crocodile 8,013
Sometimes they perform them live and it sounds all right. In other cases, the score is considerably re-arranged for orchestra. Like Gladiator, for example.Karol

crocodile 8,013
I've not seen the film for a very very long time. Must be something around 16-17 years.Karol
publicist 4,643
Damn. Couldn't it have been another Horner score? ANY other Horner score? Sharkissimo

If they were played live, they'll do that.I don't know for sure but I think Horner usually does prelays. I don't recall seeing keyboard players at his sessions like you would with Goldsmith. #SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
Goldsmith only had live synth playing at the session up untill the mid-80's I think.

Jim Ware 526
Goldsmith only had live synth playing at the session up untill the mid-80's I think.Up to Supergirl.Sometimes they perform them live and it sounds all right. In other cases, the score is considerably re-arranged for orchestra. Like Gladiator, for example.KarolIt will need considerable conforming to make the score fit the film; this has the makings of a musical mess. I will be stunned if Horner actually conducts the thing. Dixon Hill 4,234
Any idea why Jerry stopped recording his synths "in the room" at that point?
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
If I recall they had trouble properly balancing the orchestra and synths for that score. Mixing the synths in after gives you a much greater control.
Dixon Hill 4,234
Yeah. I used to be vehemently opposed to prelays or postlays of anything (soloists, synths, choir) - anything where all the players weren't together. But it's silly to pretend that the whole recording studio system doesn't have anything to offer symphonic music. Especially when the end result is meant to be heard in the theater and on album, rather than necessarily in a concert hall.
crocodile 8,013
I think Horner still records most of the stuff in the room - even solo vocals and stuff like that. The exceptions are Avatar and The Amazing Spider-Man where synths are pre-layed.Karol
MikeH 768
I don't think Supergirl was the last 'live' time for JG. The synths for Explorers, Star Trek V, and The River Wild were recorded in the room.

Dixon Hill 4,234
They certainly sound like it, and in The River Wild sessions footage, I believe you can see the guys at the keyboards.
MikeH 768
In the liner notes for Explorers Bruce Botnick talks about the process of recording them live. And then there's the session footage from ST:V and River Wild.

publicist 4,643
SUPERGIRL prompted a change in personnel. It was the last time Goldsmith employed Eric Tomlinson.
