Jim Ware 638 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Ghostbusters (Elmer Bernstein, 3000 copies)The Rookie of the Year (Bill Conti, 1500 copies)Return to Peyton Place (Franz Waxman, 2000 copies)An Almost Perfect Affair (Georges Delerue, 1000 copies)
Danielle 0 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Ghostbusters (Elmer Bernstein, 3000 copies) 8O Ok, hold on a sec...Back, ordered.
BigMacGyver 0 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 I am extatic! I have waited endlessly for that to happen! My favourite Bernstein score is finally available outside of the crappy song CD! How varese pulled that out of the hat is a mystery to me but I had to order this the moment i saw it. 8O
BigMacGyver 0 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 I never noticed it in the film Because it was terribly butchered in favour of the songs.
King Mark 3,975 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 How do you know it's that great then...K.M.
BigMacGyver 0 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 How do you know it's that great then... The magic word is BOOTLEG! But those shabby times are over! It is available!PS.: You might not want to listen to me because my reaction is so incredibly based. I loved this score since i was a kid. Yeah, i even noticed the bits that stayed in the film back then. Gozer's theme is big and terrifying, Dana's theme is beautiful and the piano ghostbusters theme is hilarious. Plus: this is one of the few later bernstein scores with an ondes where the instrument's sound is fully appropriate.for more info, check my review of the boot here
King Mark 3,975 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Hmmm...it is from an era where all film scores of this type were greatK.M.
Hellgi 3 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 A few months ago, there was a complete score analysis done in Film Score Monthly. The author was ecstatic not only about the overall quality of the score, but also about the interest of owning the (by the time) bootleg copy for soundtrack- and Bernstein-lovers.Jerome
robthehand 3 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 I'll get Ghostbusters, but there's nothing else I'm dying for there.I hope they release Airplane! some time...
Incanus 5,890 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Nothing of interest once again. Ghostbusters might be a good score but I have no recollection of it. It made no impact on me in the film.-Mikko feeling rather morose after last nights Oscar travesty-
Dean1700 5 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 So how long do you thing Ghostbusters will last before it is sold out?
Ollie 1,375 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 I had a feeling Ghostbusters might be in this batch.I'll be getting that and Delerue's latest. Ghostbusters is a great score and if you are a true film score fan it belongs in your collection.
Mr. Breathmask 624 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Oh no! More spending to do. And I was going to order The Omen trilogy. I guess I'll have to put that on hold. 8O
Kendal_Ozzel 36 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Hey, it's no Williams, but Ghostbusters will do! Now I can get rid of that awful-sounding boot! 8O BTW, weren't there going to be 6 scores?
BigMacGyver 0 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 weren't there going to be 6 scores?The Bill Conti disc contains 3.
robthehand 3 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 I ordered An Almost Perfect Affair, Return to Peyton Place and Ghostbusters. I might get that Conti one some other time if it doesn't sell out, but I'm not fussed about it from what I heard of the samples.
Mr. Breathmask 624 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Ordered Ghostbusters, and I also ordered the Omen Trilogy anyway. And Lost too.
robthehand 3 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Whoa... An Almost Perfect Affair has sold out already.
Greg1138 3 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Cool - I got the Ghostbusters boot and I've often wondered why there was never any decent release.......hopefully this makes up for it!
King Mark 3,975 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 I'm tempted to order Ghostbusters out of pure faith, because I don't remember a note of it(i remember the song only)K.M.
ST-321 42 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 They do have 3 samples on the site.I'll be ordering this one for sure!
King Mark 3,975 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Alright, some strange supernatural force has compelled me to order Ghostbusters. The samples sound like good orchestral 80's film music to me,and due to the score's legendary status among score fans...K.M.
Jill Sandwich 11,168 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Lemmie get this straight, Stripes gets a regular US release, but Ghostbusters is limited to 3000 copies? Crazy world.
Dean1700 5 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Well, I just splashed out and bought myself Ghostbusters. I haven't seen the fim in years but like King Mark there was some strange supernatural force that was telling me to get it while I could. I just wasn't willing to sit around thinking about it while it sold out from under me.I just have to decide whether I want to open it and listen to it or leave it sealed. The law of averages says I will open it.
Romão 2,473 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 I remember loving the evil fanfare everytime something evil was about to happen (like the dogs coming out of the gargoyles, the arrival of gozer, etc). The comic scoring is also delicious. I wish I could afford this at this moment.
Romão 2,473 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 I have a credit card. I just don't have credit. Meaning I can't spend what I don't have.
Delorean90 47 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 The raves for Ghostbusters and my own desire for a release of Rookie of the Year are really making me wish I had some cash on me right now. Then again, I do have a birthday coming up next month...hmm...
Jill Sandwich 11,168 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Sounds like mum's credit card will get me Ghostbusters. I shall do something special for her then.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,388 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 I don't have enough Bernstein, so I've ordered Ghostbusters.
BigMacGyver 0 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 There has hardly ever been such an enormous response to a 3000 unit club pressing. I dare to predict that Ghostbusters will sell out in less than a month.Lemmie get this straight, Stripes gets a regular US release, but Ghostbusters is limited to 3000 copies? Crazy world. That is kind of a downside but keep in mind that there are probably very difficult legal arrangements surrounding this release since there is already a song CD out there which also contains portions of elmers score and has recently been reissued. Doing it as limited run was probably the only option in this case.Furthermore, the limited pressing certainly made it possible to release the entire ghostbusters score while there is music missing from the stripes score.
King Mark 3,975 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 What is this strange mass compulsion to order Ghostbusters?I have no real clue what I'm getting... K.M.Wondering if he wasted 20$US
robthehand 3 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 What is this strange mass compulsion to order Ghostbusters?Because it's a great score.
BigMacGyver 0 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Because it's a great score.I second that. The bootleg is one of my most-played elmer bernstein CDs and even with the bad sound and the broken cues it has always been a great listen. I can't wait for this release, especially due to the additional music that was not featured on the Bootleg including the extended end credits or the concert (album) version of the main theme. I am afraid this CD is missing the source cues that are played during the hotel finale and the restaurant scene but i can live without that.
hornist 1,261 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Everyone is going to buy the Ghostbusters! Maybe it is great time for me also to have first non-Williams soundtrack!!
robthehand 3 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Maybe it is great time  for me also to have first non-Williams soundtrack!! 8O 8O 8O Yes... it is a good time.
Dean1700 5 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Everyone is going to buy the Ghostbusters! Maybe it is great time  for me also to have first non-Williams soundtrack!! You mean you don't have anything other than Williams? Oh man! You have missed out on some fantastic scores. If you want to start getting other composers get ready to spend some dollars.
Jill Sandwich 11,168 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 I just have to decide whether I want to open it and listen to it or leave it sealed. The law of averages says I will open it.It's such a good score, I doubt you'll leave it in the wrapper for 20 years and sell it.
robthehand 3 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Who is this Non Williams?*glances at CD collection*John Barry, I think.
King Mark 3,975 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 The only Elmer Bernstein c.d.'s I have is The Magnificent Seven and Wild Wild West.I'm going to sample more stuff untill Ghostbusters arrives, maybe To Kill a Mockingbird,The Ten Commandements and The Great Escape.Somehow this composer has remained almost completely unknown to me up untill now.I read he was one of the greats in the 60's?Seems to me like he scored a few classics early in his career then sort of faded away .I've never seen this guy alonside Jerry Goldsmith,John Barry,John Williams and James horner, but yet his career overlap theses composers.Perhaps it was because he scored only comedies later on.I wonder why this Bernstein guy didn't score major Fantasy/Sci-fi or serious movies in the 70's and 80's,which is odd considering the scope of such scores as the Magnificent Seven.k.M.
robthehand 3 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 I dunno... I've known of Elmer for quite a while, a few of his scores (The Great Escape, Magnificent Seven) are of course well known to me, but I'm pretty sure I've "experienced" quite a lot of his other music one way or another. He also scored the first film I saw where I started noticing the "background music".
King Mark 3,975 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 What I mean is that The Magnificent Seven is a "Star Wars" caliber score for a western, but that was like...1960.What the hell happened?Given his potential why aren't there more true masterpieces(I mean I'm sure Ghostbusters is good, but if I didn't notice it before then there must also be a reason). And there must be reasons why as a film score enthousiast,I have completely failed to notice his scores for 25 years(except maybe Airplane). It's not like he's one of these dead Golden Age composers like Alfred Newman, yet his best works seem to be from that era.K.M.
robthehand 3 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 I know what you mean - he seemed to work pretty steadily, but I can't say I've heard a lot of his later stuff.
Kendal_Ozzel 36 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Well, I ordered Ghostbusters last night (as well as Heartbeeps—yes, finally!). I can't wait to hear both of these!
Morlock 12 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Of this batch, I got An Almost Perfect Affair, and Rookie Of The Year, as well as The Left Hand Of God, which is about to sell out. Didn't have money for Ghostbusters at the moment, I guess I'll find some if I see it starts selling out.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,388 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Or you can find me on eBay in a few years from now.
