The lyrical film requires a lyrical score that you can't do with new technology.
the sessions were like playing for a concert..
about Spielberg: He's comfortable with music, enjoys music..

Ars superior est vita hominum.
"We pop out and come into the world and music is there. We didn't invent it - it's all organised in the atmosphere by divinity or whatever. It's a miracle." - John Williams-
I think music is a stream of some kind. It could be blood. It could be water. It could be ether. Whatever it is it seems to be a living, organic force that’s in motion, that serves humanity and is part of humanity and part of what describes us as humans. We sing, play, dance, all the things that we do. And there is a vibrant and great literature we have been given. ... As musicians, we join the stream. We swim in the stream with all the other millions of music makers. It’s a life force, a strong one, surrounding us and we are part of it. -John Williams-

I agree with Williams completely. One thing that's so great about War Horse is that you wouldn't be able to tell that it was written to fit within the paramaters of the film. It feels completely organic and natural. These types of scores are my favorites.

"The Orchestra?"Willams could play Obi-Wan (in his old mentor years) in the reboot of Star Wars.
"Yes, Luke, the Orchestra. The Orchestra is what gives a Composer his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together. For over a thousand generations the Film Composers were the guardians of peace and justice in the Music Department. Before the dark times, before the Synthesizers."
