  1. Looking for the name of the composer on posters or in trailers, which I still do.

Back on topic: I love both movies; Cameron's may win by a little bit just because it's the easier one to go to for a moment of fun; you may even simply go to a sequence; Alien demands more attention. This doesn't make one better than the other; the slight advantage is just due to a practical possibility the excellent sequel has.

By golly! When watched the BR, even though I didn't want to, I couldn't help thinking about this, but I didn't see it; I didn't scrutinize the picture because i really didn't want to be taken out of the movie, so I was happy not to notice it. That's why I didn't! That's a great thing they did.
  4. Good to see I wasn't the only one to have thought of this reading the thread's title; I wondered about the difference with "The Asteroid Field". Since I am not quite familiar with "Pursuit of the Falcon" enough yet, I can't answer-- though I'm sure it loses to "The Asteroid Field".
  5. Nope, I don't; only good movies (based on my instinct and not just hearsay), regardless of the era.
  6. Funny, I have just finished watched the movie again (I've been watching the Trek movies again during the hoidays); you have described the score well, Stefan, so I will simply say that I approve and would/will welcome an expanded edition of the score. 18 years... damn...
  7. I forgot to mention I was all the more curious regarding this episode, and found the story was all the more well handled, as "The Adventure of the Final Problem" is actually a story without any problem at all; someone said here some stories did not involve any actual crime, but what Doyle meant to be his last Holmes story simply had the hero fleeing from a frighteningly powerful villain that even he feared enough to run away to another country (Moriarty being some sort of Deux ex Machina Doyle came up with to beat his unbeatable hero). The series' writing team (regardless of the credit of the final screenwriter, each episode cannot be but the result of a brainstorming, especially for such an important one) came up with a really good (and Holmesianly obvious-after-the-explanation simple) interpretation: the fall interpreted not just literally but as the result of a fall from grace that ultimately leads to the actual heroic jump to save his friends. I wonder how many episodes/seasons are planned; I will gladly buy the whole thing on Blu-Ray.
  8. What a wonderful series! Before discussing it, let me see I love Douyle's stories, the Peter Cushing version of The Hound of the Baskervilles, Youg Sherlock Holmes, and of course the Granada series with Jeremy Brett. This new adaptation is excellent on all accounts. What is remarkable is the way they manage the greatest difficult: adapting the stories to our era. Just like Young Sherlock Holmes managed to remain faithful to the spirit of Doyle's work and tying into it, this series manages to re-tell the stories in the world of 2012, with plenty of changes while remaining true to the spirit of the story and the characters. The cast is remarkable. Freeman's Watson is not a mere spectator-cum-storyeller, has dry humor, and works well with Holmes. Cumberbatch is as perfect as Brett was, in this new style. Moriarty is really very good, especially in teh final episode. The Joker trait in him actually helps sell the second season's finale, at the end of which I do not doubt he really is dead (they have not changed the main plot elements that much so far as to believe they would change this one): Holmes actually does say on the roof Moriarty is insane, and he was really depressed at having lost the onlyopponent worthy of his own (criminal) genius; being insane and certain of his superiority and that his death would inevitably prompt Holmes to take his own life, killing himself is not that surprising. I also like the way it is all done, such as Holmes' deducting point of view (with all the clues zooned in on and labelled); it is a neat and efficient way of conveying his thoughts and deductions in about as fast a way as they flash through his mind without lengthy dialogue to explain them. An excellent adaptation and an excellent series in its own respects.
  9. I received the CD this week-end and played it yesterday, and loved it. It may have been mentioned already, but I have not read this thread yet: I was happy to hear little bits (tracks 5 and 16) that reminded me of The River, which i love; I haven't heard this from Williams since that score, which i hope will soon get the Deluxe treatment;
  10. My favorite scores of his: Twin Peaks (I wish more music would be relased rather than as downloads), The Straight Story, A Very Long Engagement. Great melancoly melodies (Twin Peaks, Straight Story, Engagement) and really good atmospheric tracks as well (Twin Peaks). Twin Peaks and The Straight Story are two of the few CDs I can and do go back to very regularly, especially when in need of soothing music.
  11. Darn; it was a very nice location; I'd been hoping to return.
  12. Even more so as I have never seen most of the movies whose score I have, and may well never be able to in some cases. It's always the music I'm interested in; remembering the movie is an incidental bonus; seeing the movie may be useful to better appreciate some tracks or parts of cues, however, by knowing what is going and thus understanding what the music is doing (or rather why it is).
  13. E.T., the year it was released, on LP of course; I was 8; a gift from my mom. My first Williams CD (and first CD), about ten years later, was John Williams Conducts John Williams: The Star Wars Trilogy (and Badalamenti's Twin Peaks along with it). Ever since then, the first thing I play on anything that can play CDs has always been the recording of Star Wars' main titles on this CD (then Goldsmith's "The Enterprise"). (Gee... Jurassic Park, Hook, The Phantom Menace, ... as first Williams album... this place should be renamed John Williams Kindergarten )
  14. Regarding the audio drop-outs I experienced: an upgrade of my Denon 2310's firmware appears to have solved the issue, as had been said on AVForums. I couldn't get it done until yesterday, and could only check four of all those drop-outs I had spotted, but they were gone, indeed.
  15. I hope those are tightly screwed to the wall.
  16. I received my Star Wars saga set from amazon.co.uk on Friday, and started with Episode IV. Unfortunately, there were several sound drop outs (increasingly so in the second half of the movie) (ie, no sound at all for a moment-- half a second? a quarter?). Upgrading the BD player's software (it's a Sony BDP-S470) did not remedy the problem. I started taking notes at one point: - at some point at the beginning of chapter 16 - "mas...ter" when Darth Vader says his old master has returned - 01:03:03 (Han speaking of the Alderaan debris) - 01:04:56 - 01:05:27 (I believe this is the one when the Millenium Falcon is attracted into the Death Star-- sorry, I'm a bit too fed up with it to check, and have lost too much time already) - 01:25:39 (when Ben is shutting down the tractor beam; after pulling a lever down, he moves to the left; it occurs when he's moving his hand up the thing) - 01:38:14 - 01:39:31 - 01:41:03 - 01:44:50 - 01:45:30 - 01:47:32 - 01:47:48 - 01:57:05 (or 50?) Mind you, some of these may be 1 or 2 seconds off (the time for me to check the player's display). They always occur at the same moment (I've tried several times, so it can only be a problem with the disc. No problem playing the disc on a laptop (Sony F22S1EB), though; the installed version of WinDVD on gives out stereo, but still, since the dropouts affect all the channels (no sound at all), a downmixed stereo should have the same dropouts, shouldn't it? Or is the laptop's BD player not sensitive to the disc's flaws? After reading about other sound problems with the set, on AVForum ( http://www.avforums....ml#post15417237 ), I checked my Sony BPD S470, and switched the HDMI output to PCM. No more dropouts. However, I was not longer able to get the rear L/R channels to output through the rear L/R speakers-- I have a 7.1 setup, and this is my first DTS 6.1 film. It seems that what ought to output through the rear L/R is sent to the side L/R speakers, and I believe that what should have been the rear central channel (6) is fed to the rear L/R speakers instead, as I do hear some sound effects from time to time. I tried several things, but could not manage to get it right. For any other BD so far, I haven't had any problem, and whatever was supposed to come out of the L/R speakers was also fed through the side L/R speakers. Everything is well connected, and the speakers are well identified-- ie, testing them does feed the test sound to the right speaker. I have now switched the BR player back to "Auto" so that the A/V receiver (Denon 2310) will get the actual DTS 6.1 track, and will see how Episode V fares; from what I've read, it should be okay. Some people don't seem to have any problem with the disc, but others have experienced the audio dropouts at the exact same moments in the film I have, so it seems to be a problem with the disc. Episode I seems to be flawed as well according to some accounts (I only skimmed over it yesterday, so I don't know). I also wrote to Twentieth Century Fox UK (http://www.fox.co.uk/contact). Darn. Otherwise, it was a wonderful experience (I had not seen the movie since 1997!); the picture (detail & color) is splendid. No problem with Episodes IV & VI; the only audio drop-out occurred during the post-movie THX logo. I'll watch Episodes I-III next Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
  17. Thanks! Very nice map, indeed. Looking for a larger version, I have found this, but the first link given does not work: http://www.stevey.com/2006/07/13/geographical-study-of-lost/
  18. Great video, thanks! And an awesome revelation at the end! Does anyone have another link to the map, please? This one leads to nowhere.
  19. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0050F9XWQ/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_8?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004WIKQIM/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_7?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER So which release is to have the better presentation of the score? There are no details for one of them. :\
  20. Lots of great things to you all!
  21. Merry Christmas and happy holidays! , home alone
