Well, in that case, here's my list:

    Alien Aliens
I'm thinking a more a big serving of takoyaki on a paper plate, but, yeah.

Actually, I take that back. I love both cheeseburgers and takoyaki, and would have both again. As for AvP, I didn't like it the first time, and once was enough.  😂

My son recently explained to me:
Palpatine wanted Padme dead. But he didn't want to kill her himself, so he asked Count Dooku.
But Count Dooku didn't wanna do it himself, so he asked bounty hunter Jango Fett.
But he didn't wanna do it, so he asked another bounty hunter, Zam Wesell.
But she didn't wanna do it herself, so she sent a droid.
But the droid didn't want to do it himself, so it sent these poisonous worms.
    And they failed.

This is probably the worst case of assassination out sourcing ever.
    No wonder it didn't work.

It’s interesting to compare Alien to 2001:ASO, it has never occurred to me. The similarity with Star Wars was more evident - even Scott talks about its influence on him in the great documentary Empire of Dreams - in terms of the rugged, used look of the Nostromo. I would never have compared Alien to 2001, but obviously some do, and it’s an interesting notion that is not far fetched at all. But I consider Alien a pretty original piece of work, if such a thing even exists in art anymore. Clearly Ridley had his influences, and it’s possible that one of them was 2001. Scott, like Lucas, used these influences and took them to another level, made something new and special. That’s what great artists do.

Well Alien is one of the greatest movies ever made, full stop. There's nothing for it. Ridley Scott showed us a vision of space wholly apart from what we'd seen before from Kubrick, Lucas, etc. Instead of wondrous...cold and terrifying. It goes without saying that Goldsmith's score is pitch-perfect. On this subject, JWFAN, there can be no debate.

The film is just flat out brilliant, and I'll have words with anyone who says differently.

Absolutely.  It's one of my favorite ripoffs.  Just an absolute delight watching Caroline Munro pretend to be Barbarella.  It also has some of the prettiest, most colorful star fields, and a fun score by John Barry.

    Random additional thoughts:
Hook and in particular 1941 are much too maligned. Both are good films, I put Last Crusade at #5, but that was mostly for sentimental reasons. SPR would probably come in at #5, but, as much as I love the film, it loses its way a bit after that gut-wrenching opening. Still a great film, but I frankly think Band of Brothers does this better. RPO, while not nearly as bad as KOTCS, is generally weak, and Spielberg, frankly, is the last person who should have directed that film. I can't rank Schindler's List. If I did, I think I'd say it's #1.  But it holds such a unique place in his oeuvre, and IMO stands out from his other work  so distinctly, that I can't even begin to compare it to his other films. It's a work apart, and it almost feels disrespectful to rank it. Sometime around Tintin, and certainly after, Spielberg entered the Ron Howard phase of his career.  A  technically proficient, efficiency-driven director capable of getting some good performances from his actors while putting out competent, well-made films that are otherwise uninspiring and mostly forgettable. Films that are generally “good” but don’t come near greatness. In fact, The Terminal, Catch Me if You Can,  Lincoln, Bridge of Spies, Warhorse,  The BFG & The Post all feel like films that could have been directed by Howard.

    Maybe.

But this (absolutely awesome) photo from Joe Sikoryak via Lukas Kendall’s blog tells a different story from the same time.

This is an early Trek convention photo from 1974.  The thing that struck me, beyond how amazing these costumes are, before anyone called it “cosplay” (God, I despise that term), is that most of them are female.  And fairly attractive by conventional standards by the looks of it too. I guess they’re still what people would call Nerds, but if I were the right age in ‘74, this is exactly where you’d find me trying to meet the Rand to my Kirk.

I love how unabashedly and unashamedly everything in The Orville is so Star Trek like, right down to the books. What's next, The Orville Technical Manual? The Orville Blueprints? Now I really want an Orville universe show set on a space station called Deep Space Wilbur.

The Orville is Star Trek in everything but name and NuTrek is Star Trek in name only.

Definitely. Lots of violence, no blood.

The movie almost has a surreal quality about it, and best watched late night I think. It's bad, of course, but still weirdly entertaining, with some genuinely funny moments between the Dwarf & Giant, and both actors play their outrageous roles with aplomb.

@Nick1Ø66 Hawk is definitely on my list!  Thanks for the clips, it looks craptacular!  Jack Palance looks like he’s having a jolly good time hamming it up.  Conansploitation movies looked like they could be made for very little money, a little rotoscoping, convincing poster art, and boom you’ve got a movie.
