I tried EDGE OF THE WORLD awhile back, but alas it didn't do that much for me -- despite the tantalizing cover.

Is it on Williams' level? No, not really. But a "fat" and delicious orchestral score, ripe with pastoral beauty. Shame it's only out on a promo set.

I’ve always had an issue with JW’s Heidi (not because it is bad musically) but rather because the score is not appropriate for the story which is very Swiss. The american sound of JW’s score just doesn’t fit with the story, culture and the setting as someone who read the book as a kid.

Again, the JW score is well written music but just doesn’t feel appropriate for the story.

There is an older German/swiss TV show based on the same book whose score I would love to see released though.

  2. I finished the first season of 3 Body Problem and I think it's a terrific sci-fi show, which deals with huge concepts, both in terms of science and in terms of morality. Many interesting concepts are explored, but the show is not just an info dump of cool concepts, the main focus is the characters which for the most part all play important roles, even though the roles aren't always apparent at first. The series deals mostly with the present time but pivotal scenes, especially in there earlier episodes take place in the past during the cultural revolution in china and these scenes are incredibly well done and feel authentic.

The opening scene is quite disturbing. The actors play their roles really well, with Liam Cunningam stealing every scene he is in. Jonathan Pryce also does some amazing work, especially in some scenes where he is practically alone (but I won't be more specific because of potential spoilers). The score also works well and creates an eerie tone for the show while introducing several themes, which grow throughout the season and culminate in some great renditions in later episodes. Especially Will's theme is very moving.

I do think that the season should have been released with weekly episodes rather than a typical Netflix binge release as the episodes benefit from having some breathing room between viewings. I hope this is something they do in season 2.

Really puzzling allegations here. HZ got his start as a keyboardist. He may not be a world-class virtuoso, but I'm sure he could get his fingers around something basic like the feather theme. (It's a great theme, but not remotely difficult to play.) And I believe Djawadi started with guitar, graduating summa cum laude from Berklee, so he's probably not the world's worst musician either.

    Agree with this completely.

Zimmer often puts down his own playing and while he is not a virtuoso pianist, he can play decently I’m sure. Some composers often tend to use self deprivation about their skills as a way of expressing themselves, this is something I’ve heard many composers do.

As you said, Djawadi graduated Berklee where he stated out with guitar after which he started studying composition, both orchestral and jazz.

    2) I think that track was meant to be used during the action scene of Rabban Harkonnen's attack to the fremen, when they get scared and run off, since I think there's no music in that scene. Perhaps they felt it worked better without score, butfrom what I remember, it could fit in there.

    5) I noticed this as well while listening to the soundtrack again a few days ago. Particularly, in Harkonnen Arena, Feyd-Rautha's theme reminded me a lot of that Seduction theme, so I checked both Harkonnen Arena and Seduction back to back and it definitely feels like the same melody but with vastly different arrangements.

Listen to 0:45 of Harkonnen Arena and then to 0:50 of Seduction.

I also remember there were some unreleased variations on this idea.

Yes the Feyd theme in the Arena track is definitively the same as in Seduction. The theme can also be heard in Song of the Sisters (in the latter half of the track) and that arrangement is quite similar to Seduction. However, there’s also a really cool vocal continuation/variation section of the theme in the suite which was sadly never used in the movie.

So, now that Part 2 has been digitally released, I've rewatched it and have some thoughts.

    1) The theme @MaxMovieMan calls "Fremen Chimes" appears twice in Part 2: 0:00 in The Sietch, and the unreleased track when Jessica leaves Paul to travel south.

    2) The track Ornithopter Attack appears nowhere in the movie

    3) The drum beat in Harkonnen Arena is in 7/4 (odd time signature just like Feyd Rautha's theme), while the beat under Kwisatz Haderach is in 4/4, so I'm not 100% that a thematic connection is implied.

    4) The first 3 notes of Feyd Rautha's theme is a retrograde inversion of Paul's theme (The One)

    5) There is no Seduction theme, it's just Feyd-Rautha's theme played in a high register on a harp or guitar

    6) The Emperor's theme is played twice: 0:39 in The Emperor, and the unreleased track when the Emperor's guard humiliates the Baron.

The Chime theme is also in Part One but the tuning of the bells/notes are a bit different. It plays in the middle of Stillsuite and in an unreleased cue where Paul looks at the film books (before Hunter Seeker).

It’s a nice little idea which works so well with the Vast Mystery harmonies playing alongside it (like in Stillsuits).

    It’s unconventional, but great casting.

I have it on good authority that this unconventional Bond will end up creeping through a toilet in the last act of Bond 26ROTFLMAO

In all seriousness, ATJ was good in Nocturnal Animals and Tenet, which are the only movies I've seen him in so I'm cautiously optimistic if this casting is real.

I would have liked to see Henry Cavil, Richard Madden or Idris Elba though even if it's a few years too late for Elba. They really should have cast him a few years ago as he would have been really good.

  6. “As it was written, Lisan al gaib” - Stilgar

“Why did the emperor choose this path and who will our next oppressors be?” - Chani

”Long live the fighters” - Paul Atreides

“My desert, my Arrakis, my dune” - Barron Harkonnen

    - We are House Atreides. There is no call we do not answer. There is no faith that we betray“ - Duke Leto

  7. The love theme/atreides theme was partly written during the scoring process of Dune Part One but was adapted and developed further after the score was finished. We got a version of this development on the sketchbook track 3.

For example at 0:15 in this clip we can hear the theme:

The opening section performed here in this clip is what I call the House Atreides call to Arms section A variation because this is also used in Armada, when the Atreides soldiers and Gurney run towards the Harkonnens in the battle.

In Part Two, the A section is not used in this way but has the Love variation which shares some progressions and melodic pets but is quite different (performed on duduk often).

The B section is played at 0:47 in the clip linked above and is used a lot in Part Two in the romantic cues but often with a slightly different harmonic accompaniment, giving the theme a different feeling in Part Two, like in the case of Kiss The Ring, a quite sad feeling.

The theme that is used a lot for House Atreides is what I call the House Atreides Noble theme. It appears in the second half of Herald of the Change, in My Road Leads into the Desert and several others including the second part of Only I Shall Remain.

Everyone seems to have a slightly different view of what the themes in Leaving Caladan represent but the 8 note theme I usually just call the Dune main theme whereas the theme plying in the opening of Leaving Caladan or Sanctuary are either Dune Main B or the Arrakis theme (which I think another member, Mephariel used). Both themes are very entwined and work great together but I would say that they’re separate themes.

I definitively wouldn’t say that any of them represent Caladan though.

There is a motif that represents Sandworm Power though which is this kind of siren like sliding motif together with the low bass guitar part. It plays towards the end of Ripples in the Sand (before the main theme comes in at the end) and also appears in other sand worm moments.

According to Variety, the budget on Joker 2 has ballooned to $200 million.

This is not only the budget of "regular" superhero movies with action scenes and CGI and such but also almost four times more than the first Joker (which costed $55 million).

That’s crazy! Dune Part Two cost less than that!

I totally agree. "The Creator" also comes to mind. I was hoping there would be something like "Prayer" of that score in Dune, but alas, religioso mode was probably not what Villeneuve was after here. Thus, "The Emperor" is the only cue vaguely going in that direction, I guess, albeit being much more aggressive

Yeah it’s clear that villenueve was looking for something very specific score wise. Looking at the scores in his earlier movies both Dune scores are a lot more melodic than the scores to said earlier movies.
