Meh, this one wasn't as good.

Maybe the last decent disaster flick was 2004's The Day After Tomorrow?

For me they need to balance "Am I enjoying this?" with "This is the dumbest thing I've ever seen in my life." DaT acted like it was trying to TELL ME SOMETHING. Maybe I would have liked 2012 (that was an End of the World movie, right?) better.

EDIT: Oh, and: BILL PAXTON! (I still hated Philip Seymour Hoffman because of Scent of a Woman at this point.)

    Twister

Oh gosh, I love this movie. Always loved it since I was just a little boy. Watched it countless times on VHS.

Watching it today, I still think it's a fun movie with great direction and cinematography and an excellent score by Mark Mancina - I loved how he used the choir to represent the tornados. But of course, some of the digital effects don't hold up these days.

    Anyway, happy 25th birthday!

I keep thinking i should watch this with my kids. It's the kind of popcorn they don't make anymore.

And is this the best score Mancina has ever done?

Overly sentimental endings and rushed endings are a Spielberg trademark, especially in this era of his career (see also: War of the Worlds)

To be fair to War of the Worlds, that came straight from the source.

One of my favourite films ever. For that reason I try not to watch it too much... once a year usually. I felt that it was time, appropriately with some good wine to accompany.

Fantastic jazzy score from Rolfe Kent.

    Those people are harmfully photoshopped.

I just watched Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Fun film. Probably the film where the franchise became "Watch Tom Cruise do his own insane stunt work." That part certainly wasn't an element of 1, 2 is best forgotten, -- I'm fuzzy on 3. All I remember is they actually gave the "masks" a "science", Philip Seymore Hoffman was great, the plot with the wife. If there were insane Cruise stunts I don't recall. GP is also the only M:I film (I think) where the villain is not either a mole or created by the IMF. Lots to recommend.

  5. I can't find my copy of the book. (Arrgh!) Does the first part ("book") end before or after Alia is born? I know the second part picks up quite some time later. (Two years?) I don't remember where the break between 2 and 3 happens.

If this is spoiler-y let me know.

I kind of look at telling the story of Dune like I did Lord of the Rings. In so many ways Bakshi's script was much more economical and yet still followed the book better than Jackson and he did it in a couple of hours to get over half of the book. Lynch's problem wasn't that he ran out of time it was that he pretty much abandoned the second half of the book! There's a ton of back story and depth in Dune but narratively it's not that complex.

The part of the book that the new movie intends to cover is the part of the book that Lynch actually did pretty well.

Is there any word on the running time? Given that it's not the entire book it would be nice if this wasn't over three hours.

  6. It was good. The teaser was great. OTOH there were jokes and they made me laugh.

I'm not sure how I feel about the narrative of Chani identifying the Fremen as an oppressed people. It's not that they weren't. It's just that I can't imagine any of them saying so. It didn't even seem to be in their vocabulary.

Always thought this piece would be a perfect accompaniment to the new Dune trailer. It’s about the same length as the trailer (just 10 seconds shy or so).

    You are not wrong.

    Spider-Man: Homecoming by Michael Giacchino

Still one of my favorite MCU scores! The music really fits with Holland's interpretation of Peter Parker.

It's SO good! And I don't know why, but Far From Home left me a little flat. But I love both Homecoming and Doctor Strange. I'm so disappointed that G isn't coming back for 2. (Although I totally understand why it's Elfman.)

  8. I kinda hope this (assuming it's good) turns into a Titanic situation. Where the world is "meh" but then word of mouth gets out...

Ha! I'm reading the story at the link and I decided to put on the Toto soundtrack. Right when I read "First, she gives us a brief history of the Harkonnen family's tyrannical rule and their war with the Fremen" I heard "A beginning is a very delicate time..." Hey, it made ME laugh.

"when Duke Leto and his son rescue spice miners" -- OMG. This was the moment in the book when it went from a book that I read a little bit every day to a book I finished in a couple of nights. If they get this right they can have all my money.

Take that statement for what it’s worth. But I’m looking forward to it:)

If you hate Zimmer then there's no pleasing you. (Are there Zimmer scores that Zimmer haters like?) But I know several people that if Zimmer does what he obviously wants to do with this they will be over the moon.

I haven't loved a Zimmer score since Man of Steel. But I'm always hoping.

And I couldn't be more excited for this film!

  9. I actually heard someone who's opinions I usually respect who objected to the beginning of X-men. He didn't feel a Nazi death camp should be in a superhero movie.

I'm sure there are exceptions, but I disagree. Holocaust survivors have been used in any number of fictional settings. (And this was a person who loved To Be Or Not To Be.)

Heck, I object more to Captain America talking the Nazis out of WWII just so they could market the movie overseas.

I'm still really bummed I missed this set. Every time the topic gets bumped, I get my hopes up that LLL have announced a new batch of stock. Even a smaller quantity like 1500 would be glorious!

It is astonishing to me that I can't go down the road any time I want and walk into Harry's and hold my head up high, and say in a loud steady voice: 'Harry I want you to sell me a Star Trek: The Motion Picture on three compact discs!"

New Line wanted to reinstate the prologue that was already there. But its very different than Bakshi's prologue, and its an approach that several filmmakers had contemplated when trying to tackle this story - its a very natural course to take. If anything, its inspired by the (fantastic) 1981 radio adaptation, which itself took the idea from Bakshi.

I didn't realize the BBC adaptation post-dated Bakshi.

All of the prologues are terrible. If you need a prologue then recap The Hobbit and emphasize how helpful and benevolent the ring is and introduce Gollum. Everything else should be discovered by the audience at the same time as the characters.

Wait, is this the Dune thread?

The more I see, the more excited I am.

The second half of the book is tremendous and the finale of Dune is one of the best endings to any book. Denis can pull it off, I think. I'm supporting this so he can.

    More Dune!

My biggest fear is that the movie will be awesome, will bomb anyway, and they'll never make part II.

    Who said anything changed?

At the most basic level they're going to be using new models. So that's change although the intention is that it will not be noticeable.

But I know Daren has said that he wants to redo the briefing lounge scene. At the least fixing the star field so that it matches the nacelle or a more ambitious approach of putting them on a virtual set of the officer's lounge. Or will they rerender the nacelle to be 4k and leave everything else as is?

There were other changes to the music (the overture, the main titles) that were not intentional but were done because there was a time crunch and the original elements weren't available. This is my recollection, someone can and will correct me if I'm wrong. Obviously Mike had everything at his disposal when he did the CD set.

EDIT: I want to be clear that I'm just musing about what might be. If they manage to produce a 4K replica of the 2001 film with everything I like and everything I hate from the edition that was supervised by Wise (and Goldsmith!) then I'm still good with it. Just be sure to give me the theatrical cut in comparable quality. I want at least the equivalent of the Wrath of Khan blu ray (both versions). At best I want the Star Trek equivalent of the Blade Runner box (EVERYTHING!).

  14. I'm wondering what will be changed in the newest version of the Director's Edition. Without Wise what will they feel they have latitude to change?

But then I thought: If they change ANYTHING will there be fans demanding the original 2001 Robert Wise Edition?

Me: I just want all of it (Theatrical / Television / DE / Deleted Scenes) in the best possible format so that I can edit together MY edition!

We already know that Lucasfilm is working hard in preventing anyone from even screening 35mm prints of the Star Wars theatrical cuts.

A non-for-profit organization in Stockton, CA, The Friends of the Fox Theater, was to screen the original ‘Star Wars’ 1977 cut in July 2019, but when word got around about it, Lucasfilm gave that organization a C&D notice.

    rQqFS2Y.jpeg

So, they ended-up screening the 2011 cut.

Wasn't the 1977 version screened at some ceremony for Marcia Lucas not too long ago? An exceptional case, I know.
