  1. I think..... you might get it! John Williams in Vienna-Live Edition by Williams, John, Wiener Philharmoniker, Mutter, Williams, John: Amazon.co.uk: Music
  2. I see pre-orders are up again for this.... for a Feb release. Standalone blu-ray without the CD perhaps?
  3. People buying multiple copies to sell on for profit are always going to be a problem in any small market where there's a collectible side to things. But I hardly think we can blame the labels for printing up small runs at a time. It's just how it's done. I imagine for both financial and practical storage reasons amongst others. Nothing wrong with it at all. Intrada just updated the site wrong in this case. It now says it'll be reprinted but they can't say when right now. Hardy surprising given the year's events.
  4. And the link is for Elite Soundtracks. Avoid this guy at all costs. I've not looked at the website for a long time, but in the CD soundtracks section, I had to get to page 4 before there was a legitimate release. He's a specialist in ripping people off, and not much more.
  5. I wonder if Donner or whoever preferred the more immediate ending of the end title. Maybe they were looking for an edit point that worked..... They couldn't cut to it after the Puzo credit because one of them has that brief key change.... so they just thought "ah well, replace the whole thing." Maybe I'm thinking too hard, trying to rationalise the irrational! The speed up is just so weird though. One of the biggest head scratchers. Thanks for all that info on the edits Jay. Fascinating stuff.
  6. I've just had a thought while watching some of the video...... now as a disclaimer, obviously I adore John, why else would i be here?! and I really do respect the orchestra as being one of the best in the world, and I was at the concerts in person and honestly couldn't have hoped for a better experience...... so, with that said.... Does anyone here who might be more familiar with the orchestra than I am, (Marian?... I'm thinking maybe you) do we know how much of the Wiener Philharmoniker "A-Team" we have here? I'm thinking about orchestras here in the UK who regularly have players dep their places out to stand in players. I'm assuming it works the same way the world over? I'll never forget the disappointment I felt after attending a Beethoven performance from the Hallé here in Manchester, and talking to one of the woodwind players in the pub afterwards. My friend mentioned that I was coming to the Williams night they were having the following week, and before the sentence was even finished, she rolled her eyes and said "hmmmm, all a bit 'pops' for me, I think I'll be depping that one out." I think my reply was just "wow. well, I couldn't possibly disagree with you more if I tried." I wanted to make some quip about being careful heading back to the busy bar, your musical blinkers might cause problems. But I left it Anyway. I've seen the Hallé on nights where they're obviously the top players, and I've seen nights where they were lacking in certain areas. Sometimes it's down to conductor, but I guess sometimes it's down to the experience of the players too. The majority of this concert recording is absolutely perfect. But, as is the nature of live music.. there are a few little flubs here and there. And yes, we can't forget that Johnny is getting on a bit, and I wouldn't be surprised if by the time the Shark Cage Fugue came round he was waiting for his second wind. None of this takes away from my huge enjoyment of the album. It's a snapshot of a wonderful historic moment in time, and this is how it happened. Having seen a few New Year concerts with the Vienna Phil, and watching some clips of them with Andris Nelsons, I'm noticing some familiar faces but also seeing plenty that aren't there in the Williams footage. Members come and go, I understand that, but I have no idea how regular change over is. So I suppose my question is.... with the orchestra not being well known at all for their "pops" performances, do you think the line up we have at these concerts is made up of the regular players, or more "understudys" who might have been more excited about the prospect of a Williams concert? Was our dear John snubbed by any of the orchestra regulars do we think? Just a thought! Wondering if anyone else has a take on it.
  7. I went to a concert here in Manchester a few years back, where they just dropped the final chord from the piece. I was so happy. It must have been the conductor's choice, as he seemed to be happily nodding his head once the audience realised they were finished and started clapping. That last chord is just too cheesy.
  8. The way I see it..... I can't afford it. And I can't really afford the standard releases right now. But I also couldn't particularly afford the concert tickets. I certainly couldn't afford the standby ticket I also got for the second concert. (gulp.) I couldn't afford the flights too comfortably, and I know for sure that whilst the hotel was fairly priced, I couldn't afford the meal I had in their restaurant the first night But guess what.... I bought it all, and I wouldn't change a thing 2020 might be one of the strangest years i'll ever experience. But it kicked off with one of the very best times of my life. I can't put a monetary value on that. These releases are going to bring back some of that incredible happiness. I can't wait
  9. Duetsche Grammophon have announced a limited edition vinyl of the concert. The records themselves are gold, (solid, 24-carat I'm assuming) and there's an exclusive note from John inside. 1000 copies worldwide, only through the DG online shop. (store.deustchegrammophon.com) Gah. ok. Take my money! Might as well!
  10. Has to be Hook for me. That film landed right in my formative years. The first film I remember deliberately going back to the cinema to see again, (go easy..... I was a kid) and I played that original album to death. Whilst potter is undoubtedly a fantastic score, I suppose my connection to it just doesn't run quite so deep. A little unfair perhaps if we're just going off the music, but I can't ignore those big Hook feels!
  11. Well boy, am I glad I asked. We're all here out of a great love for John Williams. Please don't be so angry. What does that achieve? I went with my girlfriend and we had an amazing weekend. After I kept saying things like "I just can't believe I'm here.... it's probably never going to happen again," she reminded me that it was indeed happening again.... the following day! So I put myself on the waiting list for returned tickets, and I got one. Just the one. So of course I went again. I paid more than I could afford, and had the most incredible time. Try and tell me you wouldn't have done the same. It's sad that you appear to be unable to feel happy for those of us in attendance. As you said, there's no need to be that selfish really.
  12. It's absolutely because I'm used to the OST. But it's just personal preference I suppose, and I always think the first part of JP breathes a little better, and gets across that sense of wonder and majesty if it's taken a little slower. When we hit the End Titles section, they can get a move on and I'm happy
  13. I have a question which I've been wanting to ask for a while and it keeps slipping my mind.... In the Musikverein was sat next to a guy who appeared to be on his own on the Saturday performance. We both responded at the same time with "oooooh" when John announced the Cinderella Liberty encore, and turned to laugh at each other. I then bumped into the same guy on the Sunday, he was sat on one of the benches in the foyer and I said a quick hello. Short-ish curly light hair. Does this ring a bell for any of you? I was just wondering if he might be a member here. And just to keep this post current...... I think Jurassic Park has suffered more so than most other Williams pieces I've heard in concert in terms of tempo. I'm really not sure why it always seems to be fast. I think this Vienna recording is just the right side of "wrong," if there is such a thing. It certainly felt fine in the moment, but then again, everything seemed amazing that weekend!
  14. I noticed a few times during Sunday's performance that the red light on the camera at the side of the venue only came on from time to time. I'm guessing only specific shots of his were being recorded, and he was being cued in via his headphones. I suppose it means less to edit. I hadn't thought it would be done this way, but it makes sense. (If I'm right.) I'm still utterly on cloud 9 from the weekend. My girlfriend and I were right on the back row at the top for Saturday, and I was fortunate enough to get a seat on the ground floor for Sunday via the waiting list. It was everything I ever dreamed it could be. I'm not sure I'll ever experience a feeling like it again.
  15. Saw the film tonight at a midnight showing. That cameo still has me grinning. Some genuinely beautiful moments in the score. Looking forward to seeing it again on Saturday so I can focus a little more on the music. Walked home from the cinema listening to the end credits on spotify. Quite a thing to take it all in. This is the end of John's amazing Star Wars journey.
  16. I read today that there's a new bluray of Nixon coming, with 2 cuts of the film. It's been years since I saw it, so I don't remember much about the film or the score. Could there be something significant score wise unearthed in a different cut? I know releases don't always coincide, but hey, maybe.
  17. Yep, this is precisely what I mean. The big print is obviously wrapped around the box. But if whoever wrapped it made sure that the spine text was centered, that would have pushed the whole design over to the right, which is what seems to have happened when looking at the front of Owen's box. Because when the front design is in the right position, the spine text seems a bit over to the left. (of course, all assuming it was done by human hand) Anyway. Not the most important observation in the universe, but it was on my mind!
  18. I've also noticed the quality of the cases that the last handful of releases have been in. The ones which have "2 disc" or words to that effect embossed on the front spine-y bit. They're the same as the ones I would buy online to replace old scratched or broken cases. They just don't feel quite as robust as previous ones have. But hey.... it doesn't sound any different Owen.... I'm just wondering about your misaligned cover.... (and this is me being very nit-picky) but does anyone else feel that the logo and text on the spine of the box are a bit too far over to the left? I'm wondering if when yours was assembled, the spine was first lined up to center the text, and it put the rest of it out. Just a maybe. Who knows. Anyway. Small whinges (Apart from Owen's box which certainly deserves a replacement, and good ol' LLL to the rescue it seems.) But what a brilliant set this is. And what an amazing time we've had, just sitting back and letting these incredible Williams releases come rolling in. It all feels truly special, and I can't thank everyone involved in the releases enough.
  19. Like a few other folk, I'm weighing up getting a 4K player. I'm going to be living out of the country for the beginning of next year, so it most likely won't be until I'm back home. But here's my question.... If I buy some 4K discs almost as a future proofing method..... are any of the special features duplicated on the BD's you get in the same set? I'm actually specifically thinking about Hook. Do I get to see the deleted scenes in 1080 without a 4K player? Or do I just get the film on the other disc?
  20. I believe the LLL version was taken from the mix stems in the film, and the fade out was there to allow for a transition into the Prince song in that scene. But you can really hear the difference in sound quality in the two versions. It's nice to hear the proper ending to the cue, but it sounds nasty! If that's what most of the stuff LLL had to work with sounded like, I applaud their efforts even more in producing the 2-CD set. (Which I utterly love)
  21. Sounds really interesting. Just ordered it from play.com for a nice £3.99! Can't argue with that price. And I'd love to hear that hook arrangement if possible
  22. I've managed to do an edit of Doc Returns/Back In Time that I'm happy with if anyone's interested. Infact.... if anyone fancies having a listen, i've put together my own personal ideal BTTF cd. It contains the complete score, along with all songs and source music, but also includes bits of dialogue, sound effects and other musical moments like Marty's band auditioning for the school dance. It also includes film versions of Earth Angel and Johnny B Goode. Since it even has dialogue mixed in with the score in places, it's certainly not meant to replace or improve upon the Intrada release, but I think it works well as a really fun companion to it, and a good way to remember my favourite bits of the film, one thing of which was of course the score!
  23. I've just had to check the order I made last night to confirm to myself that this is actually happening. I'm stupidly excited beyond words. And if you're after "Mr. Sandman" to add to the song collection, make sure you get the version by "Four Aces."
  24. Jaws the Revenge contains one of my all-time favourite film moments..... Michael Caine lands a plane on the water....... he's just about to get out....... and....... SHARK!!! "Sh*t!" says Michael Caine. well, yes. Quite.
  25. My local council installed a high frequency emitter at the local shops, to stop kids hanging around outside and being a nuisance. Whenever the shopkeeper turned it on, after about half an hour all the kids would leave with headaches! I like to imagine them all looking like Michael J Fox did in that bit in Teen Wolf with the dog whistle. Anyway..... Glad I'm not going crazy and a couple of other people have heard it too. There are a bunch of other scores and recordings in my collection that also have high frequencies running through them, no doubt simply a result of recording or mastering methods. But for some reason this one really got to me. I shall now go about getting rid of it!
