    Midsommar

So, this Aster fellow is clearly the real deal. Midsommar is arguably a slower burn than its predecessor (Hereditary), but it's the more ambitious and fulfilling work. People seeking quick thrills and zingers should probably not bother. This is not a Joe or Drax kind of film. Instead, the film uses beauty (and boy is it a beautiful looking film) to lull you into a kind of comfort that makes digesting all its disturbing and twisted perversions all the more painful by the end. Brilliantly shot, written, edited and scored, on top of all which it has a great sense of humour to boot. If anything, it could use some trimming in its setup, but I don't mind. The elaborate world-building really pays off anyway. And yes, Wicker Man is clearly a template, and there are some familiar tropes, but it's by and large its own beautiful thing. Best film I've seen so far this year...though I'm not sure that says much.

Bespin is a very poetic person: He listens to Aznavour.

A fantastic collection of 108 vintage Cinematograph shorts, well scored, well narrated and perfectly assembled. Engaging, entertaining and beautifully restored window through which you look back a 120 years in time.

That Joe didn't like Hereditary is fine. That he continually points to the lack of physical attractiveness in the cast as one of the film's major flaws is a bit of a puzzler, but not entirely surprising I guess...

Also, the granddaughter's appearance clearly plays a big role for the film's tone. An adorable Shirley Temple obviously would not have worked nearly as well.

Oh, Vangelis has used it well on several albums (for instance, the film Blade Runner opens with a sampled orchestral bass drum played an octave lower and send through a very long Lexicon hall reverb, something that has been copied ever since), but to send all the original masters through a 7 seconds hall reverb is a faux pas, in my book. It's like adding CGI monsters to the original Star Wars of 1977. Imagine The Beatles remasters were treated this way! The pre-remaster CDs are the way to go.

PS: As far as I know, BR is probably the first album where Vangelis stopped using real percussion instruments in favor for sampled ones. It's something I've always regretted. Now he could play percussion while playing the keyboard, usually in a layered fashion together with his synths.

Fascinating how an instrument that was once described as 'cold and lifeless' could suddenly sound 'majestic and lyrical' (Vangelis) and 'alive and funky' (Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder, etc).

Absolutely. How often is it that we're relatively around to see a totally new avenue of sonic creation opened up, and see this novel instrument--and I use that word in the broadest sense-- come alive in the hands of these incredible pioneers, Vangelis, Bernie Worrell, Wendy Carlos, Tomita, Ryuichi Sakamoto, etc., creating new standards of approaching music? So different in their many ways, but all from the same, singular origin.

    It's really something.

Anyway, you don't need to be worried that BR: 2049 is answering this question (if it is still a question after BR: 2019?). Before he even made the movie, Villeneuve said he didn't want to change the ambiguity surrounding Deckard's origin, and as far as I know, he kept his promise.

Danny Boyle says a third 28 Days Later movie is in the works with Ex Machina writer/filmmaker Alex Garland. I guess they too realize that famous franchises get funded easier than completely new ideas.

Technically impressive, but it left me somewhat cold, just like with Fury Road. I guess I need something more than action, action and action.

Someone is selling a Thorens like that on a Belgian/Dutch auction site. He's asking 400 Euro for it (with original Thorens arm & cartridge). The one from the pic above has a more fancy SME 3009 II tone arm & cartridge. 400 Euro is a good price (especially compared to ebay prices) but I don't need it. I just love the design.
