Some people will complain that this board is getting cluttered with Indy 4 threads, but what the hell. This is the first JW score in 2 and a half years . . . ! So? What's on your list (in order of preference, please):

My list at the moment:

1. The Jungle Chase

2. The Adventures of Mutt

3. Call of the Crystal

4. Finale

5. Hidden Treasure and The City of Gold

That's about it for me, too. I can't wait to someday hear the unedited or complete version of Jungle Chase.

2. Journey to Akator

3. Finale

4. The Adventures of Mutt

5. Temple ruins and the secret revealed

In the Depature from 1:15 till the end you get Williams at his absolutely best. This is the best part of the soundtrack for me. I can hear it over and over again, it's absolut terrific!!!

3. The Departure (indeed, the ending is terrific)

4. Irina's Theme (that Finale dance extension is in one scene in the movie, as far as I remember)

5. Journey to Akator (I like the folk flavour)

It would be too easy for me to use the concert suites, as they are just outstanding. It's neat how the first four tracks are almost like a grand KOTCS suite--an alternative to the "Finale and End Credits" for the concert hall. If you exclude them and the "Finale" track (people are saying it even though it was excluded in the title...?), then in no particular order, my favorites right now are:

1. The Journey to Akator (solid Indy music, and fun mariachi)

2. The Departure (absolutely glorious--that last major statement of the Crystal Skull theme is destined for classic status, IMO)

3. The Jungle Chase (growing on me the more I hear it--love the menacing statements of Irina's Theme, and that marching motif in the last half is cool, and somewhat similar to the motif from the last half of "Desert Chase," but different enough to be its own)

4. Ants! (also growing on me--nice creepy music, and the action material is actually quite good; I really like the usage of Devchenko's [sp?] theme/Russian theme here)

5. Agh! TIE: Hidden Treasure and The City of Gold (some really cool material here, pretty much speaks for itself) and Temple Ruins and The Secret Revealed (the music for the door opening [adapted into the concert suite] blew me away in the theater, and the climactic music is very good too--good buildup of suspense and horror, with the classic Williams high wind licks at 3:56-4:02, amongst other goodies)

Irina's Theme - starts out evil and sexy but becomes surprisingly pretty as the full orchestra comes in (I also love the Russian extension part on the Finale that people have mentioned though I noticed part of it gets cut off in the end credits)

Jungle Chase - somewhat uneven but it has a lot of JW flourishes that I like in his action music, particularly as Irina's Theme keeps popping up.

Journey to Akator - I love getting very different kinds of music like the Latin American source music. A nice reminder of how versatile he is.

The Departure - somewhat anti-climatic but still an interesting piece - almost as much sound-design as anything in the way he used the orchestra

Adventures of Mutt as no. 5 perhaps - the Hook similarity is distracting somewhat but Hook also had swashbuckling swordfights so I guess it makes sense

I think this album has MANY outstanding and enjoyable tracks.

The ones I don't like SO MUCH are Oxley's Dilemma, "Return." Orellana's Cradle I like because of the map seuqence music at the end, and Secret Doors and Scorpions I like because of the suddenly menacing music of the scorpions (somehow reminds me of Monster Books from PoA).

Is there no-one who likes Snake pit as I do?

1) Snake Pit

2) A Whirl Through Academe

4) Irina's Theme

5) The City of Gold

Oh and I absolutely love the South American style music in Journey to Akator!

Same here.

The score is treated very well around here, generally, unlike the movie, which gets a mixed reaction...

I do, it's probably my second favorite action cue after The Jungle Chase in the score. It's a great "light touch" action piece in the vein of the first part of Flight From Peru and The Basket Chase.

Interestingly the scene doesn't really have any action unless you count them slowly sinking. But the music works great, scoring the comedy of the dialog as much as anything.

- The Journey to Akator (simply because of the lovely statement of the B theme)

- Hidden Treasure and the City of Gold (Quite good)

- The Departure

- The Adventures of Mutt

Sadly, I'm having a hard time coming up with five... Um, I'm hoping I just need to listen to it again. It just didn't have that Indy feel to it. The action cues were far too devoid of distinct melodic material. I like dissonance and driving rhythms as much as the next guy, but I was hoping for at least one action cue which was thematically driven.

why limit it to 5?

why not instead have your favorite top 19 tracks to KOTCS?

Go ahead, be my guest.

Lumiere:

Ma chere Mademoiselle, it is with deepest pride

and greatest pleasure that we welcome you tonight.

And now we invite you to relax, let us pull up a

chair as the dining room proudly presents -

your dinner!

Be our guest! Be our guest!

Put our service to the test

Tie your napkin 'round your neck, cherie

And we'll provide the rest

Soup du jour

Hot hors d'oeuvres

Why, we only live to serve

Try the grey stuff

Chip:

It's delicious

Lumiere:

Don't believe me? Ask the dishes

They can sing, they can dance

After all, Miss, this is France

And a dinner here is never second best

Go on, unfold your menu

Take a glance and then you'll

Be our guest

Oui, our guest

Be our guest!

Lumiere and Chorus:

Beef ragout

Cheese souffle

Pie and pudding "en flambe"

Lumiere:

We'll prepare and serve with flair

A culinary cabaret!

You're alone

And you're scared

But the banquet's all prepared

No one's gloomy or complaining

While the flatware's entertaining

We tell jokes! I do tricks

With my fellow candlesticks

Chorus:

And it's all in perfect taste

That you can bet

Come on and lift your glass

You've won your own free pass

To be out guest

Lumiere:

If you're stressed

It's fine dining we suggest

Chorus:

Be our guest! Be our guest! Be our guest!

Get your worries off your chest

Let us say for your entree

We've an array; may we suggest:

Try the bread! Try the soup!

When the croutons loop de loop

It's a treat for any dinner

Don't belive me? Ask the china

Singing pork! Dancing veal!

What an entertaining meal!

How could anyone be gloomy and depressed?

We'll make you shout "encore!"

And send us out for more

So, be our guest!

Lumiere:

Be our guest!

Chorus:

Be our guest!

Mrs Potts:

It's a guest! It's a guest!

Sakes alive, well I'll be blessed!

Wine's been poured and thank the Lord

I've had the napkins freshly pressed

With dessert, she'll want tea

And my dear that's fine with me

While the cups do their soft-shoein'

I'll be bubbling, I'll be brewing

I'll get warm, piping hot

Heaven's sakes! Is that a spot?

Clean it up! We want the company impressed

Chorus:

We've got a lot to do!

Mrs Potts:

Is it one lump or two?

For you, our guest!

Chorus:

She's our guest!

Mrs Potts:

She's our guest!

Chorus:

She's our guest!

Be our guest! Be our guest! Be our guest!

Lumiere:

Life is so unnerving

For a servant who's not serving

He's not whole without a soul to wait upon

Ah, those good old days when we were useful...

Suddenly those good old days are gone

Ten years we've been rusting

Needing so much more than dusting

Needing exercise, a chance to use our skills!

Most days we just lay around the castle

Flabby, fat and lazy

You walked in and oops-a-daisy!

Chorus:

Be our guest! Be our guest!

Our command is your request

It's been years since we've had anybody here

And we're obsessed

With your meal, with your ease

Yes, indeed, we aim to please

While the candlelight's still glowing

Let us help you, We'll keep going

Course by course, one by one

'Til you shout, "Enough! I'm done!"

Then we'll sing you off to sleep as you digest

Tonight you'll prop your feet up

But for now, let's eat up

Be our guest!

Be our guest!

Be our guest!

Please, be our guest!

Everything's growing on me, but I personally would recommend giving "The Jungle Chase" a little more play time. There's actually some good stuff going on when you listen to it.

I said this at the beginning of the thread:

1. The Jungle Chase

2. The Adventures of Mutt

3. Call of the Crystal

4. Finale

5. Hidden Treasure and The City of Gold

Now, I will revise it:

1. The Jungle Chase

2. A Whirl Through Academe

3. Departure

4. Journey to Akator

5. Ants!

I gave it another listen yesterday and absolutely loved it (which is much more than I can say for my initial listen).

I'll have to go with...

- The Spell of the Skull

- Jungle Chase

- Hidden Treasure and the City of Gold

- Temple Ruins and the Secret Revealed

- The Departure

I don't think five is a large enough number. It leaves out cues like Orellana's Cradle, "Return" and Finale.

- The Journey to Akator (simply because of the lovely statement of the B theme)

- Hidden Treasure and the City of Gold (Quite good)

- The Departure

You were absolutely right. I gave it a second listen and all of the thematic usage really came out in the score. I should have known better. My first run-through of a score is either fantastic or crap. If it's a good score, I have a feeling about it though, even if I didn't think it was good the first time around. That's what happened this time. I knew there was something good lurking on the disc. Jungle Chase is wonderful. The musical battle between the various Mutt action motives and Irina's material is great, as is the pounding rhythm in the second half. It really felt like Williams was trying to get back to the strongly melodic action writing of Desert Chase or Belly of the Steel Beast. Quite good.
