More Who! But... Kylie Minogue... I mean come on!

Don't knock it

Great line from latest episode of Torchwood:

Gwen: "Have you ever eaten Alien meat?"

Cap'n Jack: "Yeah"

Gwen: "What was it like?"

Cap'n Jack: "He seemed to enjoy it....."

:(

It may be just me, but this season of Torchwood just ain't capturing the imagination like the first series......it's good, don't get me wrong, it just ain't great....

....yet.....

Ugh. Captain Jack. I initially loved the character. I thought the idea of having a purely sexual being (that is, neither homosexual or heterosexual) was a great idea, and IMO an accurate prediction of the future.

But to be honest, lately they've just made him gay. I'm like "yes, Russell, you created Queer as Folk. But this is not Queer as Folk."

Greg, we finished Life On Mars last night. All I can say is :lurk::ola::wave::music::beerchug::sleepy::lsvader:

What an incredible series. The ending was incredible, and open to many interpretations. I'd be interested to discuss the ending with you either in PM or in this forum if the other Whovians don't mind :)

No problem here. I guess I'll have to check it out at some point too.

On a semi-related note, a quick question for you two native Brits if you could throw a quick thought my way: is Blake's 7 worth checking out? I'd never seen any of it but watched a bit on YouTube a few months back while digging for Who stuff and was intrigued.

You can try, but since I've never seen a single episode you might be on to a bit of a loser!!

As for Cap'n Jack being just gay, the tension mounting in the Jack/Gwen relationship is plainly being missed by some! It is so far the only continuing storyline in the second season (though that will evidejtly change in the next episode)....

I just assumed you'd seen "Life On Mars" as you told me about the sequel series coming up. Oh well. Let me be the one to say you really should see it. It's fantastic!

Maybe I'll just discuss it with myself here, and you and John can look on in bemusement. :(

Maybe we should do it in PM. I'd hate to discuss the ending and ruin it for Greg, John and anyone else who seriously needs to see this incredible piece of TV.

Brain of Morbius coming to DVD! Oh yes! Seasons 12-14 really need to be released in their entirety as soon as possible. They remain the pinnacle of the show's history IMO. Closely followed by the new series.

Yes, it looks like a big Tom run is coming on DVD. Both The Invisible Enemy (with K9 and Company as a K9 set apparently) and The Invasion of Time are on the list too.

As I mentioned in another thread I've just ordered the Lost in Time collection, which I've been looking forward to getting for a long time. The Time Warrior is released here in April and I'll be grabbing that too.

if you could see an old villian appear from the classic series in the new series four who would it be?

mine is a toss up between The Master and Davros!

I think the Master's been done now! :) ....though the window was left open for a further appearance.....

Davros? Well - many rumours have circulated about his possible return - watch this space!

I have previously mentioned however that I would love to see a return of the Giant Vampire Bats from State of Decay....there was much, much more in that story that was only hinted at....

Time will have to tell - but season 4 is fast approaching now......everything is looking good....

Which is more than I can say for a certain major character in Torchwood after seeing "Reset"....!

It finished it's first series not too long ago and has been commissioned for a second. And I'm glad to hear you liked what you saw of it James, as much as I love Lis Sladen it always looked a bit too much on the kiddish side for me. Sci-Fi Channel is going to be shoing it alongside Series 4 in April so I'll check it out.

Invasion of the Bane WAS kiddish, but no more so than most 70s Dr Who so I actually really enjoyed it  Plus I've been in love with Liz Sladen since I was 5! Great to hear it'll be on the Sci-Fi channel. April looks like being a good month :)

Yeah - it is definitely a children's show - but as you say Mr Twinkle a lot of 70's Who was childish anyway.....the Sarah Jane adventures does tend to feel like a throwback to that period at times....and fear not - she still looks great!

No confirmation yet on broadcast dates for Season 4 of Who - but I dare say it'll be part of the spring lineup again which means end of March/early April.

John - yes, the mention of her working for UNIT did surprise me a little since we have not heard much of them really considering what a staple of the Whoniverse they once were.....maybe they will see a resurgence in the coming years?

I'm still holding out for a return appearance of Nicholas Courtney! With moustache if at all possible.

We just got episode 4 of Torchwood S2 over here in the States. Wow, what a well-made episode. Adam the "new" member of the team was an inspired idea, and the whole episode was written and realised brilliantly. Season 2 is shaping up quite nicely, and with the return of Martha in the next episode it looks like it'll continue to improve. Here's my rundown so far:

Episode 1: 5/10

I wasn't a big fan of this one. Captain John (or whatever he was called) minced his way through the episode quite cringeingly. I hope he won't make a return appearance. Much as I wanted to know more about Jack's past in the Time Agency this was a really annoying episode. I'm all for a little raunch in moderation, but did we really need "Doctor Gay"? It's all just a bit too much.

Episode 2: 8/10

Much better! Good plot, excellent effects, and a very sympathetic "villain". Bloody gory too.

Episode 3: 7/10

Another well-written story. Effects were very changeable though. The creature was amazingly well realized when it was less active. However, the final scenes where it starts waking up and breaking free from it's ropes it looked laughable. It was about as convincing as Kroll! I was actually quite shocked how poor that effect was. It's motion was totally out of scale, and made it look like a digital glove puppet, whereas in the earlier scenes you really felt the weight and size of the creature. On a more positive note, what a great way to give Reese something more to do. (Or is it Rhys?)

Episode 4: 9/10

My favourite of the second season so far. The role-reversal for Tosh and Owen was funny and touching at the same time.

This would be nice, and not entirely a surprise since Courtney has continually been involved with the world of Who since the cancellation of the original series.

Glad you're enjoying Torchwood - I would broadly agree with your episode ratings....and you may be glad to know that things are about to get a whole lot darker for the team....

You missed one pixie - episode 3 was the 'two worlds colliding' one with Tosh as the main story hinge.

The episode with the huge creature TBH I found pretty lame. Yes, you had the boyfriend's discovery but there didn't really seem to be much of a story apart from that. The role-reversal episode was indeed superb. Great music as well actually - I extracted the solo theme for Jack's memories from a 5.1 capture.

And yes, this last episode really showed a side you wouldn't find in Doctor Who. Still can't wait until Wednesday to find out whether *it* really did happen.

Oh you're right! How could I forget that episode? It was a very good one. The young soldier put in suspended animation! I'd give that one a 9/10 too, actually. Probably just behind the role-reversal memory-change episode in my preferences for the season so far. My, so I've seen 5 already! Only 8 to go! :P

Unfortunately my Torchwood "source" still hasn't coughed up anything other than Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. Hopefully I can catch up soon.

Some dates to remember for those of us in the US:

Apr. 4 10 PM EST- Battlestar Galactica Season 4 premiere

Apr. 11 8 PM- The Sarah Jane Adventures premiere, regular timeslot 8:30 thereafter (except the next week)

Apr. 18 8:30-10 PM- Voyage of the Damned

Apr. 25 9 PM- Doctor Who Series 4 premiere

That's right, the US start date has been announced before the UK! I'm expecting something around a 3 week lag between the UK and US broadcasts.

Are you talking about Who or Galactica? :P

This'll be the second time Who and Galactica will be shown new back to back. The last time was Series 2 of Who and the first half of Season 3 of Galactica. I hope my brain doesn't explode.

Galactica is a superb series....and the UK got season 3 on DVD way before the US did....but there's another thread for that somewhere ;)

BBC4 are to devote a whole night to the life and career of Verity Lambert....hopefully there will be a Who story or two shown that night, since it would be great to see it without all those commercials that the cable channels keep sticking in every bloody 5 minutes!!

It's her Grandfather - whom of course we have met before - albeit briefly.....

.....and there is another very familiar face at the end of the trailer - which (if you don't mind camera stuff in cinemas too much) you can see HERE....

HELP!!!

Anyone who's watching Torchwood. We recorded Saturday's episode in the US (episode 6, with the Pharm institute and Martha Jones). We just watched it today and our recording cut off right before the end. Please can someone tell me (in spoiler-font if necessary) what happened.

Here's how far we saw (spoilers):

Owen had just been shot. It looks like he's dead!!! His body is lying on the ground with the Torchwood team crouching around him. The camera just starts pulling back. It looks like it might be the final shot of the episode (Shock horror!) and then suddenly... our recording stopped!!!! Damn it!

Please can someone let me know if anything happened after that?

Thanks ;)

Season 4 Season 4 Season 4!!!!!!

WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO

(cough) sorry about that.

Short term memory loss is usually a sign of age or too much Guiness. Or both. :P

But you're right, though it hasn't been officially announced it looks like April 5 is the day.

EDIT- My bad, looks like it was officially announced today.

Series 4 Finale (minor) spoilers:

Great video here from someone lurking at a location shoot (cell phone?). It's not a major scene, none of the main characters are in it, but it does show very clearly that this year's finale will feature....

The Dalek Invasion of Earth. Take II. But 150 years before the first one. Which makes this the first one. Even though it's seen second...Wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey.

And...

Rose is in the finale, her appearance in ep. 11 will be real, not a flashback, dream, etc. Looks like it'll be another 3 part finale. And both Jackie and Mickey have been spotted on location shoots too. No sign of Pete yet, though...

Two reports from the Series 4 press launch:

http://blogs.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/i...new_series.html

Why is it that the first question out of every reporter's mouth to RTD or Tennant is when are they going to quit? :P

Well - after the emotional goodbye to Torchwood last night, "Partner's In Crime" has just aired - and what a start to the season......a bit of a hokey story (though not unimagintive and it does have it's moments) serves as a great vehicle for Tennant and Tate - their reunion is an absolute hoot, but don't let that blind you into thinking this was all comedy - it's very much Doctor Who and the preview to episode 2 is a blinder....can't wait - Saturday Evenings are back on my calendar for the next 12 weeks!!

One thing I will say - one moment towards the end of the episode set a large shiver down my spine.......a secret has been well kept....

BTW Greg, I'm not really seriously watching Torchwood so I don't mind spoilers. What happened in the finale?

Torchwood finale was a pretty complicated affair, but excellent. It'll take more than a few sentences to fully explain it.

Greg - I agree with everything. The story was a little bit lame, but that moment near the end was a real 'WTF??' moment and the overall chemistry between the Doctor and Donna was wonderful. The charades bit got funnier by the second. I knew that

Rose was going to return for a few episodes at some point in the series

but that was just freaky.

The only thing I'm worried about with this show, is the amount of special effects heavy episodes seem to be increasing, but overall the FX are not up to film standard, and for someone who's heavily critical of fake looking SFX it's a little distracting.

I stayed up late last night to see it, I manage to catch it right at someone was putting it up. Typical RTD Who series starter, lots of fun. I agree with Greg, it's a very original idea but the plot was a bit on the simple side. And I agree with rich, the CG Adipose were on the weak side (trivial aside: the shots with the large amounts of Adipose were created using Massive, the same software created for the large battles in LotR). The spaceship looked great, though. The episode shined, as usual, in the character moments. And a decent amount of wonderful continuity porn.

The bit at the end was a wonderful huge surprise. I wonder if that scene was added late after word got out that she was coming back to set it up more. We'll be seeing a lot more of Donna's granddad too, there's more to him than we've seen. And that little throwaway line about "the bees have vanished" will be back.

Link to comment

Yes, there's a shot of giant bees in one of the trailers. Hope they're going to do something more interesting than 'attack of the giant bees' with that.

And yeah, I read about the 'massive' thing on BBC on Friday. It did raise my hopes slightly, but the problem with that type of CG is the same problem I have with Spider Man - it looks too soft, and doesn't have the real texture you'd expect.
