Oh, yeah? Like what? In season two, she went from one psycho to another, and another. People started laughing with the absurdity of the writing (the Kim parts). I never heard anyone say the same about season 1. You are the first. Why is that, Roald?

If Season 5 was an option I'd vote for that. It's only half done, but it's the only one that has kept my interest this far. Season 4 was great until the SecDef was rescued, fizzled out, then got good again at the end (which I didn't see until recent re-runs 8O ) I was into Season 2 for a while too, despite the Kim limitations.

And Alex, I don't know about Kim, but you've gotta admit that the whole "amnesia arc" with Mrs. Bauer in Season 1 was just awful.

I can deal with just one absurdity but not a pile-up of implausibilities.

Long live LOST!!

I'm not the first Alex. In season 1 Kim and mom also went from one psycho to another, and another. Mom losing her memory along the way...

Season 2 pushed it too far, but it had A LOT to make up for it. Most of season 1 however CENTERED around the Kim/mom situation...

It's fair to say that Kim is the weak link. In Season 3, they tried to solve this by giving her a desk job. I didn't buy that either.

Season 1 is classic. The first 13 episodes are awesome, as are the last 5. In between, it sort fizzles, but it had to start up from the 13th episode again, after having to tie up everything because the makers didn't know if they'd get picked up for a full season. Despite the silly amnesia subplot season 1 remains the best IMO.

Season 2 is a great sequel. The wedding subplot was a bit tedious in the beginning, but once that got going, the series was really great. After 11:00p.m., though, I felt it became too vague. The whole chip thing seemed too McGuffiny. I can see why a nuclear bomb would be a threat, but the whole "fabricated recording that no-one can tell isn't real" thing seemed too contrived.

While season 3 is overall of a consistent strength, I didn't think it had as many classic moments as the first two. Sherry Palmer annoyed the hell out of me (even in season 2 already, and the last few eps of day 1). She's so annoying, she actually talks a man to death. As such, I was most pleased with the ending of the penultimate episode.

Season 4 started off very strong, but once Heller got rescued, it all fizzled into a big bowl of rubbish, until it pulled itself up slightly with the last few episodes. Overall, this is probably the worst season.

Season 5 may just surpass season 2. Season 1 is in my eyes pretty much untouchable, just for its classic status, but season 5 has been a very wild ride so far, and it looks like it may become the best series since season 1. It may even be better than season 1, but I'll always have a soft spot for that season.

SPOILER WARNING!!!

I also think Season 2 is best. It seems to surpass Season 1 where suspense and originality is concerned, and Season 3 seems to me pretty contrived and uneven. I agree that Kim's character isn't particularly well written in Season 2, but there are many great moments to compensate for that one flaw. Season 3 seems to me pretty contrived and uneven (what with Nina Meyers appearing yet again out of nowhere, the first six or so hours which happened to be only a covert sting operation, and Chapelle giving up his life so willingly). Also, the ending seemed rushed and anticlimactic. The scene from the last episode, which takes place in a school, might have been taken from any old cop show (sure, Chase loses his hand, but that seemed kinda weak compared to what he had to go through earlier). On the upside, I really loved the characters/performance of the Salazar brothers -- there were some great moments there -- and the prison riot scene.

I haven't watched Season 4 yet, so I can't comment on that one way or the other.

It made me give up on the series. Luckily, Lost came to my rescque.

I agree that Season 4 has been the weakest so far. Reusing S2's main plot and building up every time, yet they didn't really seem to be going anywhere. I still don't know exactly what that Marwan guy was after, and the ending would have bombed if it weren't for the Chinese subplot.

Day 5 is really good so far, and the last few episodes have been really significant.

Luckily I'm also following Lost, Prison Break (saw 114 yesterday) and House, which give me stuff to look forward to if 24 has a bad patch.

Fair enough. It really took me out of the show though I thought it was so ridiculous. But when I borrwed the S1 DVD I watched it straight through in a few days and expected to be blown away, but by the time it was over I was kind of underwhelmed.

While season 3 is overall of a consistent strength, I didn't think it had as many classic moments as the first two.

Yeah, that was my feeling as well. It didn't start out as strong as every other season, but it didn't suffer quite the "big midseason dip" that 1, 2 and 4 had.

The only thing that worries me about Day 5 so far is that the first half has been so good and so shocking (and with such a major character body count) that I'm worried the second half won't live up to it. Here's hoping.

I find Lost is better taken in small doses at a time. Unlike 24, which I just want to keep watching every time it ends. A big part of Lost is the mystery, and the longer you take to watch it, the longer you sustain that, and keep the questions in your mind.

That's because you are a CSI person.

That'd be something, seeing as how I've never watched it. If you look at the list of my favorite shows in that thread, you'll see a distinct lack of CSI or anything like it.

I haven't seen the first three seasons of the Jack Bauer Power Hour, I thoroughly enjoyed season 4 and am having a blast with season 5.

John said it best. Season 5 has been so good that it will be hard for it to keep the momentum. But I hope it does.

I don't dare read much of this, as I've just finished season 4 and haven't seen a single episode of #5 yet. Anyway, here's what I think:

Season 1 - Amazing. Keeps the tension going by coming up with characters you care about and putting them in dangerous situations. Many episodes had me on the edge of my seat. Cuthbert is hot.

Season 2 - Starts out a bit strange, but still good overall. It's not that much about characters you care for though, so it rarely gets really exciting. Kim is annoying, but Cuthbert is still hot.

Season 3 - They keep trying to make things bigger, but that doesn't necessarily make it more exciting, often it rather just goes a bit too far. It does have enough emotional tension to get really gripping in the second half though. Kim is still annoying, and Cuthbert isn't hot anymore.

Season 4 - Same as before. Not as gripping as #3 (not to mention #1), though it does have its share of exciting moments. Some nice twists, some predictable ones, some annoying ones. By far the best acting in the series, by several cast members - Sutherland has great moments in the last few episodes, Devane is amazing throughout, and the woman who leads CTU during the first half (don't dare check the IMDb and look for her name) is great as well.

Generally, they probably shouldn't have brought back the same characters in season 2 to begin with, and instead should have done something different. Season 4 in particular brings back just too many characters - even though its nice to see plenty of them again, in many cases it just stretches the believability even more than the general plot already does.

Marian - looking forward to season 5.

In season 2 it wasn't a problem. Palmer as president, Tony in the field, Cuthbert being hot (annoying, yes, but hot too), and Jack kicking arse. And let's not forget the unforgettable George Mason.

In season 4 however, it got very tiring. The second half of the season just seemed to be about how many veterans they could cram back into the show.

Berkley is indeed great, of course. I was going to mention him, but somehow I didn't. A shame he couldn't have stayed on the show longer.

Still, season 2 already had plenty of moments where I felt it repeated too much. Over four seasons, the whole idea of Bauer always being the CTU hero, regardless of where he was actually working at the beginning of the day, has become increasingly odd.

Interesting comment - especially with the recent hint that 24 - The Movie may be in development - without Jack Bauer!

I've only seen the first two, but out of those, I must say I enjoyed the second one infinately more. In the first one, the only actors I liked in there were Xandar Berkeley and Zeldjko Ivanec. In the second season, I actually liked Jack, as well. I don't remember details, but I do rememeber that the first one seemed so utterly ridicules by the time it was half way through, I had already given up hope. I almost didn't begin the second season, but it grabbed me. Kim getting lost and lost again and getting into a new mess at every turn in the first season was just infuriating.

I'm surprised that you're with the plebs on this one, Alex. Most people would say that the first season is the better one. Et tu, Brute?

I don't remember that much overall stupidity in the first season. It's certainly minimal compared to what's going on in the later ones.

Nope, that was the second season. There she escaped from one obvious psycho and ran willingly into the arms of another. With each new episode we were introduced to a psycho that "wanted" her. And sometimes we were "treated" with two different psychos for the price of one. She never learned her lesson. Totally absurd situations. Everybody I know laughed and throwed bricks at their TV set. Of course, it was then, at its most absurd and least believable moment, that the series emotionally grabbed you. Now that the characters are over the top, you are finally able to like them. As always, you need swollen, overblown situations, with a clear distinction of good and evil, before you can relate to anything. You need to be slapped in the face with evident cases, enlarged emotions. That's why Crash, Titanic, Million Dollar Baby and the films of Shyamalan are tailor-made for you, Morlock. They lack every bit of subtlety. You are the plebs, Morlock. You made Titanic big, but we will make it sink again. Better yet, we don't have to do anything, the Titanic will sink itself. It's the nature of the beast.

Good luck.

Alex

For the record, you liked Million Dollar Baby more than I did (and you even fell for the maudlin, false score). But I certainly do concede the fact that I like big, bold, in your face movies.

But, for my defense, I caught a minute of Armageddon today, and it was the single worst minute of my entire day. So I guess I'm not entirely hopeless, from a Cremers point of view.

Yeah I can see where you're coming from... there's a mental picture forming now.

Talking of 'poaching' though, there have so far been 2 people from Prison Break and 2 from 24 to appear on House. There's the lawyer and Lincoln Burrows from Prison in the Pilot and early in S1, respectively; and Nina and Terri from 24 have also appeared later in S1.

Michael Cudlitz also appeared in an episode of Prison Break. He was the Federal Agent escorting Jack and Nina to Mahmud Faheen in day 2. He also recently had a guest role on Lost. Most people may know him as Sergeant "Bull" Randelman in Band of Brothers.

Hehe, me too. My brother and I love having a good scoff when we see another 24 or Prison Break actor appears in House. I know they need a load of new supporting characters for every episode but it's unsettling seeing two actors returning from the dead, and one of them actually being nice

And the twists just keep on coming! :(

Spoilers lurk in the text invisible, where spoilers for last night's Season 5 ep (10 PM-11PM) are discussed:

I saw an interview with the 24 powers-that-be last week, where a fan's question was about how Logan was so spineless and if he could be redeemed from that. The answer: "Ask us that again after next week's episode". No &%^$(&! I thought for sure it would be the VP, but of course that was too obvious the way last night was set up. Possibly all those rumors about Audrey's father (the SecDef in gover-speak) were wrong too: maybe he's not involved in the conspiracy after all, but comes back to extract vengance of the non-soul patch variety on those who tried to implicate his daughter.

Note for Newbies: please don't quote the invisotext in your post, the white font would show up in the quote box and risk exposing the world to unintentional spoilage.

That was some twist...

My brother and I spent about 15 mins discussing endless solutions to this mess - I still don't believe that you know who is really you know what, but I guess we find out in 3 days.

And I can't help but feel for some fellow UK viewers stuck on Sky One. They're 6 episodes behind us and only yesterday saw the motorcade being attacked.

Each season had it's highs and lows. As much as I loved Jack's take-no-shit personality from Season 2, Season 4 had the best action and most cohesive plot IMO. The current season is shaping up to be a great one though...

Well, the season is now over. I have to say that the second half wasn't quite as great as the first half IMO, it was still pretty good. Everything involving Logan after his revelation as the big bad guy was really well done.

My favorite moment from the finale was easily the looks that Logan and Martha exchange when Logan is arrested and he realizes just how thourougly she duped him. Not to mention that Jack won the day with his brain rather than his fists or various torture implements.
