A24 4,814 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Yes, Williams misunderstood the film and thought he scored The Adventures Of Short Round In Shanghai. Is this the first time and only time Spielberg had to ask Williams to rewrite the whole damn thing? And all this based on 1 minute clip.Yes!
Marian Schedenig 10,165 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 I haven't listened to it (I will when I get the CD), but: I don't like that clip at all. It has nothing to do with the film. I'm going to say away from this release as far as possible since the OST is perfect as it is. What's that got to do with anything? The supposedly better fitted version was used in the film. It's available on the old release and the new one. Plus we also get, apparently, a shitload of new music. How is the new music required to fit the film in any way? If it's great music, it's great music, and if it's great but unfitting music, we should be especially happy that we get to hear it at all. indy4 1

A24 4,814 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Like I said, I guess I am too (emotionally) attached to the original music (and film) to listen to a completely different approach.
Incanus 5,858 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Like I said, I guess I am too (emotionally) attached to the original music (and film) to listen to a completely different approach. But are you still interested in the complete original score on disc 1?
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,949 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Alex? Emotionally attached?Improbable. Koray Savas 1
Sharkissimo 1,975 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Yes, Williams misunderstood the film and thought he scored The Adventures Of Short Round In Shanghai.Oh come off it. It's far from playful. It's still a tortured lament, just somewhat less dark than the final version of the cue.

It's far from playful. It's still a tortured lament, just somewhat less dark than the final version of the cue.I mean in 'overstating' it. Spielberg's exaggerated, 'more, more, MORE' approach.
Sharkissimo 1,975 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 I mean in 'overstating' it. Spielberg's exaggerated, 'more, more, MORE' approach.I could play devil's advocate and argue that Cadillac of the Skies is overstated, but works dramatically because of that.
A24 4,814 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Yes, but that's the apotheosis of the film, namely Jamie living his last moments of childhood, and thus it was quite appropriate at this point. But to argue (which is what you are doing) that the whole score should've been like that ... well, I guess it doesn't come as a suprise ...
Sharkissimo 1,975 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 But to argue (which is what you are doing) that the whole score should've been like that ... well, I guess it doesn't come as a suprise ... Erm, no I'm not. I'm just saying your revulsion at the original The Return to the City is more than a little OTT. Yes, it's misjudged, but it's not the clusterfuck akin to needle dropping Training Montage from SPACECAMP into the love making scene from MUNICH, that you're making it out to be.
publicist 4,648 Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 I don't see a breathtaking difference apart from it being much broader orchestrated and more string-heavy. But it's essentially the same musical content. Sharkissimo 1
Lady Dimitrescu 9,917 Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Williams is a failure. I can't believe I ever liked this composer.
publicist 4,648 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 I'll buy the new one but only because i couldn't find the old one after my last move.
Incanus 5,858 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 I'll buy the new one but only because i couldn't find the old one after my last move.Explanations! Order the OST from Amazon!
A24 4,814 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Yeah, no exuses, get the OST! And much cheaper too!
Incanus 5,858 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 And it leaves more of the expanded bottle caps for real zealots!
crocodile 9,209 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 I'll buy the new one but only because i couldn't find the old one after my last move.Nah, you're just a closeted expandist! Karol

publicist 4,648 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 I'll buy the expanded, period! The old Warner's cover isn't to my liking.

Incanus 5,858 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I may be slow but I still don't get your witticism.
publicist 4,648 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Have i ever mentioned how i hate these endless months-in-advance LLL announcements of sale-coming-soon-announcements before i finally can press the fucking order button at my local merchant? it is annoying and should be stopped immediately.
A24 4,814 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 It's designed for a larger format. In case you are wondering, yes, it's from my private collection.
publicist 4,648 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I have that LP, too. The big cover with the fence would have looked even more spectacular on the old LP. But WB had a terrible house designer in those days, WoE looks as shitty:Though this one looks great:And this one...NOT!!! (also WEA)
A24 4,814 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I don't like the Witches cover but why you think the two are alike is a baffling mystery to me. Empire is nicely stylized and could even work as a film logo. The Witches is just collage kitsch.
publicist 4,648 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Because it's obviously the same design scheme: take the poster, miniaturize it, put it in a box and add a background, ither stylized or white.
crocodile 9,209 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I may be slow but I still don't get your witticism. When the announcement picture was first released Uni "misread" the track listing.Karol

Incanus 5,858 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I too have all those on my "private" collection Oooh that sounds exclusive and fancy. I too have a "private collection".It will be the usual 10 pm vigil for the LLL website to update and then a feverish filling of the order form tonight. I hope their shipping is its usual self this time as well as I can't wait to hear this set!
A24 4,814 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 We all have but mine is, well, just a little more private.

nightscape94 967 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 The EOTS cover is quite stirring actually. Nothing wrong with it.

Uni 307 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 The EOTS cover is quite stirring actually. Nothing wrong with it.I actually think the cover art (which is beautifully redone on the new release) is just about the best poster derived from Spielberg's movies. It sums up so much of the story and its themes—the boy who loves airplanes seeing the object he idolizes, not realizing the danger and horror incumbent in the reality before him.
filmmusic 2,638 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I'll buy this from SAE* maybe with Penelope, since this is the last one of the still-in-print film score releases I don't have.*I don't see it there yet.
Jay 42,484 Posted June 24, 2014 Author Posted June 24, 2014 Well I think the new cover is great, as good as the other Jim Titus / John Williams / La-La Land covers(Including The Poseidon Adventure in the pic because it wasn't Jim Titus and shows how much better the covers have gotten since he was brought on board to do all their John Williams titles. No disrespect to whoever did The Poseidon Adventure, but Jim's work on all the others easily surpasses it).
Incanus 5,858 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Yeah Titus has done excellent job. The new EOTS cover is particularly striking, much for the reasons Uni mentions above. It is closer to the DVD cover except for the font of the title and in this case black is a better choice.
Uni 307 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 And I do love all the new covers too. Just to clarify, I was referring to the art of the movie's poster, not the CD cover per se.
