Composer_Fan 2 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Quite possibly the ugliest composer who ever lived, John Rutter is quite famous, especially for his choral works.I'm singing his Magnificat with my college choir tomorrow and I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with his music. I've heard that he's more popular in America than he is in the UK. Thoughts? Opinions?
GoodMusician 66 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 I perform quite often in churches so I run into his stuff pretty often. If I'm not mistaken, we're doing his mass setting for christmas actually... and I have performed his Requiem before.I have to say that his requiem is unorthodox and very... moive-esque in its theatricality... but some of it is quite gorgous like "The Lord is My Shepherd," "Pie Jesu," and such.I always wondering what he looked like lol.
nicholas 1 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 He makes Andrew Lloyd-Weber look like a matinee idol. Most people in the UK know Rutter from his Christmas music. He is considered hopelessly anachronistic by most people, but his music has an undeniable charm. "What Sweeter Music" is a very pretty carol, but not much more than that.Unfortunate name, too. "Rutter."
flytrumpet 0 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 I have a rehearsal today and concert tomorrow of his "Gloria" the version for brass ensemble and choir.Quite a fun piece to play for trumpet.Richard
Mr. Breathmask 624 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Are you calling Akira Ifukube ugly, Merkel?- Marc, not familiar with John Rutter.
scissorhands 16 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Copland is uglier.I find John Rutter QUITE boring. It's fun just for one listen, but there's not much else beyond that plain tonalism. In my opinion Martirlistener 1
Ollie 1,375 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 The Godzilla guy, right?Yes he was the composer for most of the Godzilla films as well as other Japanese Sci-Fi films. He also composed classical/concert works, stage works and scored many other Japanese films.
Ollie 1,375 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Yeah Bennie wasn't exactly prince charming.
gkgyver 1,647 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 No wonder he was drawn towards Alfred Hitchcock's thrillers.
robthehand 3 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Is that Herrmann in the second picture?Yes, quite late on in his life.
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 So then, who are the best-looking film composers?Ray Barnsbury - who thinks Rachel Portman could be, by default
tpigeon 3 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Well, John Williams of course. Harry Gregson-Williams and JNH would also be in that category I think. Silvestri too.Ted
robthehand 3 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 So then, who are the best-looking film composers?Ray Barnsbury - who thinks Rachel Portman could be, by defaultFemale - Rachel Portman definitely.Male - John Barry, in the 1960s.
Romão 2,473 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Wasn´t Jerry Goldsmith nicknames "Gorgeous"?
tpigeon 3 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Indeed. But he was kind of ugly, actually.Ted
crocodile 9,724 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Maybe someone should do "the ugliest composer" poll?Karol
Ollie 1,375 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Oh sure that will be a great idea and really show what class we have here at JWFAN.Com
Henry B 51 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 We're singing "Shepard's Pipe Carol" in chorus class. Pretty nifty.
gkgyver 1,647 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 What female members?Come on, some people here have to be gay.
GoodMusician 66 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 that doesn't make me a girl?!And John isn't ugly... not compared to the rest of these people.I saw ap icture of Rachel Portman the other day and I cringed! I was like "You're shitting me?!"
Ollie 1,375 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 What female members?Come on, some people here have to be gay. That really makes no sense.
gkgyver 1,647 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Actually, saying that gay people can't judge the beauty of other men doesn't make sense ....
King Mark 3,975 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 What does JWfangirl think?I think she's our only surviving female memberK.M.
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Renovia AIM'd me the other day, but I was away and by the time I got back, she was gone!Ray Barnsbury
Ollie 1,375 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 So what are you saying?Someone asked "what female members" to which you replied, "some people here have to be gay."What that has to do with female members is beyond me.I never made this statement posted by you: "saying that gay people can't judge the beauty of other men doesn't make sense ...." So you kinda lost me there for a moment.
David Coscina 4 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 What does Rutter's looks have to do with his compositional abilities. I have his Requiem and I will lift Up Mine Eyes, and both are beautiful. C'mon guys, let's not be superficial here.
SeekUYoda 0 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 What does JWfangirl think?I think she's our only surviving female memberK.M.Rutter is fantastic. "Gloria" is wonderful, of course, but I especially love his "O Come All Ye Faithful" - gives me goosebumps every time.- SeekUYoda, female, and still lurking....
gkgyver 1,647 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Someone asked "what female members" to which you replied, "some people here have to be gay." What that has to do with female members is beyond me. The point is that both are attracted to men, so me saying "some here have to be gay" meant that gay people can substitute female members in finding the ugliest composer.I'm tired ...
King Mark 3,975 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Well,it's not hard to see, even for a staight guy, that that copeland dude is pretty ugly.anyone has that photo of JW before he lost his hair?K.M.
Romão 2,473 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Ugly composers?Cosima wasn´t too much of a beauty either
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Ouch. But at least she wasn't the one with that unforgivable beard.
jerrygollay 0 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Indeed. But he was kind of ugly, actually. Ted.Jerry ugly ??? Come to the spot !
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 It looks like his face was carved out of oak.Ray Barnsbury
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,388 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Which is a cool look if you are in your 70's.I doubt any of us will look remotely as good when we are as old.
jerrygollay 0 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Jerry was handsome and a real gentleman .
