Muad'Dib 2,059 Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 Samples!http://www.colosseum...e-Desplat-.htmlSounds quite good. I like it!Edit: Nice homage to Rite of Spring in Nightmares Attack!
Jay 46,244 Posted October 22, 2012 Author Posted October 22, 2012 A mistake the webmaster made for sure.
Jonesy 55 Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 I like the new Djawadi's score, it's so orchestral.
alicebrallice 134 Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 I was all :D during "tooth collection". I like what I'm hearing.
alicebrallice 134 Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 the day you hear me utter such a thing would probably mean I was under death threat. or possibly having a stroke.please note that!
alicebrallice 134 Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 I'd expect nothing less of you, messenger!
Matt C 605 Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 The samples sound wonderful. Looks like next month will have some definite highlights: this score and Lincoln.
SF1_freeze 138 Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 I listened to the Cinematic Sound preview of Rise of the Guardians and what i hear is fantastic! Didn't know i would say that about Desplat .I say that as a very vocal critic of his Potter scores (mainly the subpar DH1). This is a whole other face and a fabulous work judging on those 20 minutes of previewed tracks.
crocodile 9,724 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 The whole/expanded (not sure) score can be heard here.Karol
alicebrallice 134 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 you like that I like showing off, don't you?
Jay 46,244 Posted November 2, 2012 Author Posted November 2, 2012 The whole/expanded (not sure) score can be heard here.KarolAmazing!
publicist 4,650 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Foobar tells me the mp3 files are 256kBit....an early christmas present from Dreamworks? Why did i pay for this, then?
Demondm810 473 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Oh my God. This is fantastic. Desplat is so good when a director doesn't restrict him!!
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 I don't understand all this "restricted" talk regarding this score. Desplat has always been a phenomenal composer, but I guess everyone here only listened to his bland Potter scores.
Richard P 5,303 Posted November 3, 2012 Posted November 3, 2012 Oh my God. This is fantastic. Desplat is so good when a director doesn't restrict him!!+10000Uber impressed here.Although I also enjoyed his Potter scores plus the two dramas he did last year.

Desplat has always been a phenomenal composer, but I guess everyone here only listened to his bland Potter scores.No. I've been a huge fan of his for some time. But his Potter scores bored me to death and I thought it was apparent he was given a fairly strict framework from which to compose. I was merely stating how happy I am to hear this quality of music from him again. And I LOVE Golden Compass.

King Mark 3,975 Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I think it's a huge improvement over Potter but still weak thematically
publicist 4,650 Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 The themes go a bit too much in tried-and-tested Silvestri-territory, but the orchestration is much more imaginative.
King Mark 3,975 Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 yes,I agree. The orchestrations are very nice which sets it apart from the likes of Debney,Powell...The delicate cues are the best. The action music still sounds very generic and unfortunately so do all the brass fanfares. With Williams scores ALL transitional brass fanfares are awesome in their own right or become holy grails of unreleased music
hornist 1,261 Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 At first Desplat's music sounds good, the more I listen to it, music reminds me of Blumenkohl's picture.Too much everything.
publicist 4,650 Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Which Desplat? Because ROTG is hardly representative. Most of the rest is very transparently orchestrated, hence it's lukewarm reception by fans of american film music.
Incanus 5,890 Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Which Desplat? Because ROTG is hardly representative. Most of the rest is very transparently orchestrated, hence it's lukewarm reception by fans of american film music.Well I find that Desplat's music is oftentimes emotionally lukewarm but his orchestrations quite unique and strong. But Rise of the Guardians score has some wonderful emotional warmth to it in its best moments. As fun as the fanfaric bustle in the music is, the quieter material here has the strongest emotional resonance for me.
publicist 4,650 Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Because he mostly rewrites other people's music in the loud moments (Elfman, Silvestri, Debney etc.). It is good, but you still feel a bit underwhelmed by the sheer familiarity knowing how unique Desplat usually sounds.
Incanus 5,890 Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Yeah that's pretty much the feeling I got from Rise of the Guardians.
publicist 4,650 Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 The song is unexpected for a Dreamworks movie in its classical nature, yes.
tannhauser 101 Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Renee Fleming has a great voice. The orchestration is sublime too. It sounds at times like a number from the old MGM musicals.
karelm 3,271 Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 Conrad Pope should get the credit for the orchestration here. I saw some of desplat's sketches and though he clearly knows what he's doing and is a consumite pro, it is Conrad's orch that breathes life into it and really raises it up a notch. I wonder if the film was extensively temped with silvestri and Powell hence the similarities in style.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 Well it's the first DreamWorks Animation picture not scored by RCP, so I wouldn't be surprised.
Brónach 1,330 Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 Conrad Pope should get the credit for the orchestration here. I saw some of desplat's sketches and though he clearly knows what he's doing and is a consumite pro, it is Conrad's orch that breathes life into it and really raises it up a notch.I think you're opening a can of worms.
Gurkensalat 385 Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 Watches the movie some weeks ago and found it very entertaining, especially in 3D (excellent use of 3D!). And I liked the music, so I looked around and found a download of the complete version from the FYC site. Started listening, liking the music very much, but what it is with the horrible sound quality? Harsh and distorted in the woodwinds? After a few tracks I gave up. But since I wanted to have the music, I managed to find a reasonably priced used CD of the official soundtrack and bought it. Much better, excellent sound quality! I knew only the Potter scores from Desplat and found them not so good, so I am pleasantly surprised by this great score. Very colorful and full of surprises. Nice discovery for me. And I don't think I am missing to much from the complete soundtrack; the CD experience seems quite rounded. Footnote: I assume that the extreme similarity to the main theme from Bruckners 6th symphony is coincidental. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OflReU5RlZM&t=1m11s
bruce marshall 1,988 Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 Very good score. Pope and his wife did a.great job orchestrating this . No expansion necessary. Â This is the only Desplat score I own! On 10/19/2012 at 3:11 AM, BloodBoal said: Only soundtrack collectors would buy a CD with such an awful cover. It makes me wish I wasn't one of them. Definitely needs a custom cover!
