Quintus 6,499 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Anyone saw the documentary about the making of Legend? I won't post the whole program but I will just post the part affecting Jerry Goldsmith...Here Ridley Scott is trying to explain why the score is different from the US and European releases as well as the crew's reactions to Goldsmith's rejection:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHBq-iHBQegJudging by this, it seems Ridley truly regretted not fighting for Goldsmith's score. So you really couldn't blame JG when he got angry with Scott. Hmm, haven't seen any of this before, including the 2000 restoration version of the movie. Might have to reappraise...
Incanus 5,891 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I was not entirely won over, not even when the hammond organ started playing the classic baseball jingle.
Wojo 2,458 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I bought Angie a while back. Not sure if I've listened to it in a year. Not every Goldsmith is a sacred cow.
Wojo 2,458 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 It was 4.99 used? Why in god's name you bought it?Why for you no write good question?
publicist 4,650 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 The soundtrack for BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA is also for grabs, go out, buy it!
Wojo 2,458 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 A, that one isn't Goldsmith (or another composer I really like) so the blind buy principle doesn't apply. 2, it was available for streaming at the composer's website so I used Download Helper to acquire it.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 The soundtrack for BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA is also for grabs, go out, buy it!Hey what did Heitor ever do to you?!
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Well in this one, it's implied that it's the studio that forced Ridley to ditched JG's score. Nevertheless, JG is still right to be angry with Scott. The same year, Terry Gilliam was apparently bullied by his studio to throw out Kamen's score from Brazil. As far as I remember, he threatened to destroy the movie if they forced him. The score stayed. Under this light, you certainly can't blame Goldsmith for being pissed off. I don't think Scott even tried to defend his score at the time.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,393 Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 That's one score I don't have, never cared for it but at $3.00 might have to, unless it means a deluxe edition is coming. Who would buy that?If that's true they really are scraping the bottom of the barrel!
chuck 155 Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 It's been 9 years since Jerry Goldsmith has passed away. Next year it will be 10th year anniversary of his death.
Matt C 605 Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 I'm listening to Goldsmith's The Salamander suite ("Goodbyes & End Titles")... and I'm swept up into it. The reconstruction was really meticulous and feels like a brand new Goldsmith score.I'm going to have to buy that.
chuck 155 Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Try this one too, someone edited the new recording and made a 15 minute suite:
chuck 155 Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 French director Jeannot Szwarc talks about working with Jerry Goldsmith, as well as John Williams & John Barry:
Naïve Old Fart 13,027 Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 I remember liking it greatly. You remember well, my friend! In fact, it was so good, Ridley Scott used it again...Well in this one, it's implied that it's the studio that forced Ridley to ditched JG's score. Nevertheless, JG is still right to be angry with Scott. The same year, Terry Gilliam was apparently bullied by his studio to throw out Kamen's score from Brazil. As far as I remember, he threatened to destroy the movie if they forced him. The score stayed.Under this light, you certainly can't blame Goldsmith for being pissed off. I don't think Scott even tried to defend his score at the time.Gilliam did indeed threaten to destroy the negative of "Brazil", if Universal did not release his cut of it.Universal - under the direction of Sid Shienberg - made a 90-minute cut, with (can you believe?!) a happy ending!!!!! Gilliam hated it, and took out a full-page add in a Hollywood paper (Variety, I think) which said: "Dear Mr Shienberg, when are you going to release my film "Brazil?"Universal relented, and one of the truly great films of the last 50 years was eventually released, and in its full cut. Phew!
Jay 46,245 Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Love the real version of Brazil. The recut version is quite bizarre!
Naïve Old Fart 13,027 Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Agreed. If only Orson Wells had more clout around the time of "The Magnificent Ambersons", or John Houston had with "Freud", or Billy Wilder had with "The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes"...
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Oh? Holmes's unevenness is also the cause of studio interventions?
chuck 155 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 The making of Total Recall with a special appearance of this thread's namesake:
crocodile 9,725 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I need to confess something - I've never watched this film, nor do I ever heard Jerry's music for it (outside of one track on a Telarc album).Karol
chuck 155 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 If they criticize Total Recall as having no theme, what of Man of Steel?
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,393 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Total Recall has several.So does MoS
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I need to confess something - I've never watched this film, nor do I ever heard Jerry's music for it (outside of one track on a Telarc album). It's a good film. It's also the best action score ever written. A recording of just the theme really can't convey what's so good about the score. Plus with all the synths, it's hard to do even the theme justice in an average re-rec.
crocodile 9,725 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 "The best action score ever written"?Karol
Melange 448 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I need to confess something - I've never watched this film, nor do I ever heard Jerry's music for it (outside of one track on a Telarc album).KarolI dont care for much of the score, but this track from it is one of Jerry's true masterpieces (IMO).It is one case where use of the 'over used' word 'Epic' is fully justified.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UydcAgYhRc4
chuck 155 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 This one's more like it:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEvLynWqmsA
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 "The best action score ever written"? Yes. This is just one of its many action highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsyplmQATko Yet it also contains one of the non-action highlights of Goldsmith's career: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UydcAgYhRc4 And the finale, with its ever-building drive, rivals ESB's finale in my ears (while of course still being totally different): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bp11aC__eXA I see Melange beat me to The Mutant, and chuckster posted my 2nd choice of action cues.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,393 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 What? No love for The Treatment?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_kFuydgQ5g
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Certainly. But we can't just post the entire score, can we? ...apparently, we can.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,393 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Love the Main Title too, even though it's basically a reworking of his Capricorn One theme.
crocodile 9,725 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 OK then, I'm impressed so far. Now, tell me: what is this "Deluxe Edition" album like, both completeness-wise and sound-wise?Karol
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,393 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 The DE is not complete I think. But certainly all you need from this score is there. And the sound is phenomenal! The at times savage performance of the NPO really shines through.
Quintus 6,499 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 God the trombones are spectacular in that score. Love it .
chuck 155 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Love the Main Title too, even though it's basically a reworking of his Capricorn One theme. No it's not; it's a plagiarized version of Poledouris' Conan the Barbarian!!
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,393 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 But Conan The Barbarians Anvil Of Crom is based upon Jerry's End Credits of Capricorn One.....
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,393 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Are you saying Jerry Goldsmith was a hack?
Jay 46,245 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I need to confess something - I've never watched this film, nor do I ever heard Jerry's music for it (outside of one track on a Telarc album). KarolGreat film, great score! "The best action score ever written"? Karol One of them, yes, absolutely, no question.
crocodile 9,725 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Okay, okay. Scoredered!Karol Marian Schedenig 1
Jay 46,245 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Now, tell me: what is this "Deluxe Edition" album like, both completeness-wise and sound-wise? Start with the OST. It must be like a dollar on Amazon. If you like it, get the DE later. The DE is long, and the most essential tracks are all on the OST.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,393 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I need to confess something - I've never watched this film, nor do I ever heard Jerry's music for it (outside of one track on a Telarc album).KarolGreat film, great score!"The best action score ever written"?Karol One of them, yes, absolutely, no question. This one and Rambo: First Blood part II
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 God the trombones are spectacular in that score. Love it . I love the train horn like sound Goldsmith gets out of the brass starting at about 3:00 in End of a Dream. "The best action score ever written"? Karol One of them, yes, absolutely, no question. This one and Rambo: First Blood part II Parts of that come close, yes. And parts of Baby.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,393 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I would consider Rambo just a nudge above Recall
Jay 46,245 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I'm meh on all the Rambo scores. But Total Recall is gold.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,393 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I'm meh on all the Rambo scores.Ass! Fool!
