DreamTheater 131 Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Well, from the time of shipping to actual delivery it takes about a week... and I'm on the other side of the planet. So that for me is... speedy indeed. Now if I take into account from the day that I order until delivery, that takes 2-3 times as long, but still acceptable, considering how popular their shop has become over the years.
crocodile 9,724 Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 Bought Jumanji and Backdraft in pristine condition on a car boot today for virtually nothing. Can't wait to check out both.Karol
crocodile 9,724 Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Flea market? A fair? Old stuff? Used CD's?"Car boot" is a term often used in the UK.Karol Wojo 1
Naïve Old Fart 13,025 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 It's what you'd call a "yard sale".Come on; someone's got to type it...
Incanus 5,890 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 "Car boot" sounds like someone is selling bootlegs from the trunk of his car. crocodile 1
crocodile 9,724 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Huh. Never heard that one before.Although, flea market would be a better term in this case. It's part of the fair that has being going on every summer since around year 1260 around my parts. You can find a lot of random stuff - from antiques to books and music.Karo
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,390 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Huh. Never heard that one before. That's because you are American rather then English.

Naïve Old Fart 13,025 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 ''You can never have enough Jerry.Interesting that you have gone for the "Outland"/"Capricorn One" twofer, and not the OSTs. Any particular reason?
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,390 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Outland is a rerecording.
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Outland is a rerecording. Really? First time I've heard that. And the album is included in the full release of the score, where it's iirc the same recording. Capricorn, on that same disc, is a rerecording, and massively superior to the full original score in my opinion. Though it's since been re-released on its own (and remastered I believe).
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,390 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Ah yes sorry. I meant Capricorn
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,390 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Serves me right for typing and working
Sir Hilary Bray 235 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 ordered from Intrada: Meteor, Star Trek VI and Clear and Present Danger plus Into Darkness Deluxe from Varese.

Though it's since been re-released on its own (and remastered I believe)."Outland" isn't really a re-recording. Tracks like "Hot Water" were just edited for the 1981 release. Any "re-recorded" tracks were recorded at the original 1981 sessions. If there are differences then it is because they are different takes.Although I love the original "Capricorn One", the re-recording is better-played, and it has better sound.
Naïve Old Fart 13,025 Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 If a friend of mine rips me a CD, it counts as "acquired", so...yes.
Jay 46,244 Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Neither of those count for this thread. But you both knew that.My Dawn of the Planet of the Apes arrived on Tuesday. Nice booklet! Also on Tuesday, I ordered X-Files: Fight The Future and The Naked Gun Trilogy from La-La Land.

Any "re-recorded" tracks were recorded at the original 1981 sessions. If there are differences then it is because they are different takes. That's what we've been saying, basically. Although I love the original "Capricorn One", the re-recording is better-played, and it has better sound. And it flows better.
TheTennisBallKid 27 Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I got the Outland/Capricorn disc because I could get it for less than just the re-release of the Capricorn One re-recording. More = betterI may still get FSM's release of Outland at some point, but until someone re-releases the Capricorn film version I don't really want to pay the prices the Intrada release demands these days. And I'd still want the the album recording anyway, as has been discussed.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,390 Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Capricorn, on that same disc, is a rerecording, and massively superior to the full original score in my opinion. Though it's since been re-released on its own (and remastered I believe). The problem with the film tracks of Capricorn is, that even though they are interesting because of the unusual instrument placement and the deliberately close miked, dry recording, the old re-recording is such a powerhouse in terms of sonics and performance that the film tracks just pale in comparison. It's like Masada, where the original recordings don't have the massive power and scale of the old Varese re-recording done in London.
crocodile 9,724 Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 On the other hand, the two are so drastically different that you have to wonder whether the re-recording even represents the score as composed for film. It's supposedly the same material, but feels nothing like it.Karol
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,390 Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 For Capricorn you mean?Well Jerry made such drastic rearrangements that one has to wonder if he was actually satisfied with the result of his experiments with the film recordings.Or maybe for pure listening purposes he wanted to go in a different direction.Damien: Omen 2 is another one where the rerecording blows the original tracks out of the water.
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Damien: Omen 2 is another one where the rerecording blows the original tracks out of the water. I rarely even play the film tracks for that. Although I think there are one or two cool cues that are missing in the album recording. Pretty much the same situation as with The Fury, really.
Incanus 5,890 Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 There are quite a few re-recordings from the 1970's (probably because of the fee situation) that offer fine re-imaginings of their respective scores in album form. Capricorn One, Patton, Omen II, Jaws, The Fury etc. That said I am also very glad of the trend of releasing these side by side on the same sets like most labels do these days as the re-recording offers truly different take on the music and performance instead of just repetition of more modern OST albums (e.g. in the case of First Knight or most of Rosewood) that are just edited down and re-arranged versions of the same material from the same sessions. My recent acquisitions of The Wind and the Lion and Patton are good examples of this.
Hlao-roo 390 Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Neither of those count for this thread. But you both knew that.I didn't, although I get it. But I would say that for my purposes offline playlists in Spotify function largely like purchases from iTunes or Amazon Digital.
Wojo 2,458 Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 At first glance, offline music via Spotify Premium looks more like it's renting the music. I don't know, I've never used Spotify.
publicist 4,650 Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 It's a wonderful feature with the only drawback being that you must synchronize every device and that can take a lot of time.
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 My recent acquisitions of The Wind and the Lion and Patton are good examples of this. But Wind and the Lion is the same recording as in the film, isn't it? I wasn't even aware that Patton was a rerecording. I must have read it in the liner notes, but I couldn't remember. I haven't listened to the score enough.

I haven't listened to the score enough.Ah I should have elaborated a bit. The Wind and the Lion has a different mix and different takes on the OST album not entirely different sessions. Intrada Patton set contains the other hand both the original score and a re-recording done in UK if I remember correctly, which had the performance Goldsmith actually preferred to the film score.
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Yes, Patton was a UK rerecording specially made for the album, according to the liner notes.
crocodile 9,724 Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 I know only the 1997 re-recording. Am I missing much?Karol
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 The actual echoplex effect, for one. Other than that, I can't really say... I'm not as familiar with the score as I should be, and I've only heard the 1997 version once or twice (I only have it on CDR somewhere).
crocodile 9,724 Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 It's one of my dear Goldsmith CD's. I'm really attached to it. But never bothered to compare it to the original recordings. Tora! Tora! Tora! suite sounds very different. But it's much more experimental in nature so recapturing the feel was never going to happen.Karol
Sir Hilary Bray 235 Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 as my Intrada CDs wing their way into the British postal system I go to La-La and place an order for the Thunderbirds Are Go/Thunderbird 6 CD and the Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea CD which I saw by chance.
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 Once again I've neglected this thread for a while. And if I insist on catching up with listing my purchases since my last post, I'll never post here again because I'm just too lazy to figure out that list. Instead, I'll just continue with the order I received today. When STID seemed to go quickly, I panicked (needlessly, obviously) and ordered it from Intrada, along with some more stuff from their sale:Star Trek Into Darkness (Giacchino)The Great Escape (3CD, Bernstein)The AVA Collection (Bernstein)Meteor (Rosenthal)Julius Caesar (Rozsa, Broughton)The Twelve Choruses (Rozsa)

Strang!!! There's not enough love in the world for Barry Gray. What else by him do you have?Ps Paul Sawtell isn't bad, either.
