They had themes!? Holy Crap!

Among all the things I have done in my short and pitiful life, becoming an inside joke on JWFAN is the one I'm the least proud of.

John Williams sucks, he doesn't write with a quill pen, there is no emotion in pencil music ! Purcell is the man !

Well, it depends. On pure listenability, Bane's Theme is obviously the better choice (although both aren't much). But in regards to which theme was more effective, it's easily the Joker's theme.

They work fine in their respected films, regardless how listenable and simple they are.

These films wouldn't have worked as well if they had traditional themes, or however you want to put it, IMO.

For the sake of the dignity of this board, I suggest clumping all "Dark Knight" music threads into one big thread

PS I don't give a shit about either themes

Gotham's Reckoning is the opening cue, along with A Storm is Coming.

Rise

Don't waste your money on this cue. This is a pure rehash. Basically various remnants of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were stitched together to create this cue. I find it amusing that most people rank this as their favourite cue of the album when its material isn't even original to the score. So basically they prefer the music of the past 2 films to the new music of this film.

From a storytelling point of view, from a directing point of view, there is one thing I associate with what he does, which is calm. There is such an inherent calm and inherent trust of the one powerful image, that he makes me embarrassed with my own work, in terms of how many different shots, how many different sound effects, how many different things we’ll throw at an audience to make an impression. But with Kubrick, there is such a great trust of the one correct image to calmly explain something to audience. There can be some slowness to the editing. There’s nothing frenetic about it. It’s very simple. There’s a trust in simple storytelling and simple image making that actually takes massive confidence to try and emulate. - Christopher Nolan

That's exactly what I was going to post. I think Zimmer's intention was more at being cinematically effective, so I guess I vote Joker.

"Mind If I Cut In" is the most interesting track in the trilogy. It essentially is Catwoman's theme. That theme, by itself, is more interesting than all the music in the trilogy combined. You should put that up in the poll.

Not nearly as interesting. Catwoman's material is generic piano tinkering.

Bane's theme is actually kinda cool. Overly simple maybe, but I dig it.

Helps that it's in 5/4. 5/4 is always fun.

Both fit their respective characters and work in the movie. As a standalone listen I'd say they're about equal as well.
Do you like John Williams? His early work was a little too jazzy for my taste, but when Jaws came out in '75 I really think he came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and an air of consummate professionalism that really gives the pieces a big boost. He's been compared to Jerry Goldsmith but I think John has a far more leitmotif-driven style of composing. In '82 John composed this, E.T., his most accomplished album to date. I think his undisputed masterpiece is "The Magic of Halloween", a theme so catchy most people don't listen to what it means. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of childhood and the importance of friendship, it's also a personal statement about the man himself. Hey Paul!

Ah, yes, I remember that post of yours! Hilarious!

I don't know if he has a theme, tht's why I said "music". They use a theme that sounds like JNH from the first film and other sad and afixiating music like in Watch the World Burn. THe Joker's noises are the "iiiiiiiiiih", the slow "da, da, da, da" like in the interrogation scene, the noisy "dum dum dum" on electric guitar that appears suddenly out of nowhere, etc. I noticed all of this in my first view.

Batman's music is just... there.

The Joker's theme is not noise or an effect. It's performed by Martin Tillman on an electric cello.

In 50 years Herrmann will be forgotten.

I liked bane's theme more - both his main theme (gothams reckoning), and his tortured/sad theme (imagine the fire/latter half of fire rises), however...joker's was more effective. Both were perfect for the films. Also, the whole score is worth purchasing, imo.

At least I can imagine John Carpenter's Halloween theme over Bane's theme. Maybe Bane and Michael Myers are related.
