Well it's not like they have a choice. And that's got nothing to do with "feeling a sense of exclusivity and like sitting on more cash", that's the selfish asshole part. YOU get to be in a little exclusive club, others who were born later or didn't find out about these in time can go to hell or buy them from you at their increased value, right?
The only asshole is the person who feels the need to call people who has a different opinion names.
Anyway, limited edition (or special edition, or collector's edition etc.) is a standard business practice these days, a marketing incentive to entice a small core group of fans. I don't strictly object to it (and no, I have never resold anything JW related in my life!), although yeah, there are a few cases in the past where I myself missed out on something because something was limited. One business practice I object to way more is "double dipping" or "milking," where a company will release the same product multiple times, with only the slightest changes or improvements.

In other words, "am I a selfish asshole" vs. "do I want art to be presented properly and accessibly". LLL should get on the digital train after Varese and Intrada, and convince JW too, including the booklets digitally too, THEN limited physical releases would be acceptable. I was insanely lucky to find this site just when all I wanted was about to come out or still available.
You do realise these editions are limited? Are you calling the LLL representatives or those who approve of their work assholes? We're all adults to discuss a topic here, no need for any name calling.
That said, I explained the general appeal of limited editions, not just of soundtrack albums but of any product, but especially of music, books, movies, watches, jewelry, cars, etc. (a sense of exclusivity). Also, like I said, if LLL sells 5000 copies of the HP boxset when it's limited, it's not like they'd be selling 50,000 if it wasn't limited. In fact, it's even possible that when it's not limited, fewer people will buy it, because everybody thinks they can buy it anytime and its value just isn't as high. Some people buy it right away because it's a limited special edition, and it's... well, special!

What's the trailer music? "The Turbulent Years"?

Wow. I have maybe half of these. Digital Jukebox is by far my favourite... Ah, Mack the Knife, Unchained Melody, The Pink Panther Theme.
Seriously considering buying this giant set.

I can't understand how different scores have their elements preserved so differently, even when so many things are the same.
Jaws and Eiger Sanction are both 1975 Universal Pictures films, whose scores where considered good enough to justify special recording sessions to re-record highlights to make albums out of to sell.
The 1st gen master of Jaws' film tracks were already deteriorating when they pulled just 25 years later to make the new 5.1 mix of the film in 2000, and the album 1st gen masters burned up in the 2008 UMG fire before anyone got to ever revisit them for a remaster.
Meanwhile Eiger Sanction's film tracks and album tracks are both found perfectly preserved 45 years down the road and we get this great new comprehensive and great sounding remaster of both.
Go figure.
It's all chance.
This actually reminds me of the police evidence warehouses. There are thousands and thousands of unsolved crimes in the US - cold cases. And there are millions of pieces of evidence stored in police warehouses all across the country: DNA samples, cigarette butts, pieces of bloody clothing, you name it. And you never know which are still intact and available, and which have been destroyed and/or lost over the years for whatever reason. Technically they should still all be logged and preserved but the reality oftentimes looks a lot different.
Anyway, back to the topic.

I also have a third Filmworks CD that includes some non-MCA released tracks (probably licenced). It has a film camera on the cover.
Yeah, I know. But these are all inferior versions, imo. I didn't even get this... It includes no additional tracks from these older hard to find albums, but adds more tracks from popular, contemporary albums that every JW fan owns anyway!

I also have the Filmworks CD! I fell in love with Training With George, it is one of my top JW cues of all time.
Indeed. This really stands out. Reminds me of "Setting the Trap," like I said, but also of the fugue from Jaws, somehow. A real knockout piece.

Yeah, that was my first exposure to this too. Not the Japanese version, but the Euro version of Filmworks (I think I may have gotten it in 1995, though, not 1993). !
Yeah, I'm familiar with the European version of Filmworks too. It has fewer tracks and a significantly less appealing cover art (with no pic of John Williams)!
Not sure whether I got it, I might have picked it up later at some point in a used CD store... Just for collecting purposes.

And then, as this old FSM thread attests to, I finally got to see the film in 2009. I've seen it once or twice since, but it's probably 6-7 years since the last time.
My EIGER story, condensed!
And I still haven't seen the movie, although from all accounts, it's nothing to write home about. Still, I'd like to see it at least once...

I actually know 3 tracks from this soundtrack for almost 30 years, from the Japanese Filmworks, released in 1993!
And these 2 tracks have always stood out for me. Vintage John Williams, in top form. "Training with George" is somewhat reminiscent of "Setting the Trap" from Home Alone, I've always felt... Same kind of urgency, drive, spirit.
-
Good news. But I'm generally not very excited about these old scores anymore....
That said, of course I will pick it up!

I dunno ,I consider some of Williams recent pieces some of his best of all times. Galaxy's Edge Symphonic Suite and Rise of Skywalker are both quintessential Williams tracks. Rebellion is Reborn and Adventures of Han are great too.
The last 2 star Wars scores are amazing (factoring the complete scores not just the OST's) .TFA somewhat less for me.
So your last JW masterpieces are TROS and Han?

Good for you!
I actually intended to see it.
That was before Covid engulfed the world like the plague....

If I had to guess, I'd say probably around 100 million... Every score, every special edition, every JW&BPO album, etc. included.

For some reason, I don't find myself revisiting TROS too much.
Same.
I hate to admit it, but I haven't even seen the movie yet. Maybe my opinion of the score will change once I do.

So you don't think the complete prequel scores are worth more than The Eiger Sanction?
Well, there's a difference between a brand-new album and an album that's long been OOP and OOS...

And in its original meaning I think it just covers the work that granted the artist the "master" title, after which they may well have gone on to create many many better things too.
QuoteIn modern use, a masterpiece is a creation in any area of the arts that has been given much critical praise, especially one that is considered the greatest work of a person's career or to a work of outstanding creativity, skill, profundity, or workmanship.

I share the opinion that most of JW's scores are masterful. To answer the thread question, I choose to define his "masterpieces" as those scores which belong to my top 10 of his works...
I know that many people think like that, and that's their right by all means, but I don't agree at all. A work of art should be judged for what it is, regardless of who created it. That's what I strongly believe in.
Otherwise... Let me give you an example. Let's take the score of Home Alone. This probably isn't in your Top 10 John Williams scores, so you don't consider it a masterpiece. But if a lesser composer, say, Patrick Williams had written Home Alone, the exact same score, you'd all of a sudden consider it a masterpiece? Because all of Patrick Williams's other scores are just forgettable trash? That doesn't make sense at all. Either a work of art is a masterpiece or not, regardless of the name of the composer.
Consequently, I submit that John Williams has written dozens and dozens (perhaps as many as 50!) masterpieces during his long, long career.... Not just what somebody considers his Top 10.

Do you prefer for LLL's Jurassic Park and Harry Potter Soundtrack Collections to be limited or not?

O-kay. Not sure I agree with this at all.
