  1. In the first link, there is a low "bwaaaummmmm" sound throughout, and in the third one, there are two higher "byaaaaaaawwwwmmmm"s, if that's what he's referring to. Not really chainsaw-y.
  2. Yeah, it's pretty weak. It's obviously supposed to be a tie-in to the new game, but falls apart and isn't very funny. I don't think I got Zuckerberg, what was his dubbed voice and weird behaviour wih his "style" supposed to reference?
  3. Bloody Pirates has a missing insert for when Ragetti's eye pops out that can be ripped pretty clean from the 5.1 channels.
  4. "One song that debuted on the Philosopher's Stone soundtrack -- "Hedwig's Theme" -- became the main musical theme for the series and appears in all of the Harry Potter films." *smashes head against table* Does this set lessen our chances of getting a complete release in the near future?
  5. I think I hear it now. It just sounds like some synth bass to me, although I'm no instrument expert and may be wrong.
  6. Digital lighting and sloppy/excessive colour grading (including desaturation).
  7. Digital purchases are still weird to me (I only got accustomed to buying games), I like to have something physical when buying things. That way I have something nice to look at, and I can limit myself by stopping and thinking "Do I want to bother with the delivery? Will I use it enough? Do I have place on my shelf? Do I really want it at all?" which stops my money from disappearing. Music I mostly listen to on my phone, but I would mostly only pay for scores in complete form, which usually is only available physically, if even. When I buy another (OST) edition, it is always physical because it must be a special score and presentation and I think of it as a novelty that is an event to listen to. Also have multiple Beatles CDs. Also I refuse to cooperate in the Devil's work that is iTunes.
  8. I thought it was horrible! Chiched, spoiler-y, I thought the visuals looked like an overly colour-corrected, digitaly lit, CGI mess (that I hated in Hobbit and the new Pirates) - it actually made me start doubting the movie again. Perhaps I should watch it a few more times to warm up to it, but then again, I didn't like it, so I don't want to. I'd rather watch the first one 50 more times, that one's a classic. OK, second viewing in proper lighting conditions and actually being awake, it's not that bad. The visuals are pretty good, I can actually make out the lines, but it's still pretty generic, spoils major (i guess) plot points and doesn't really hype me up the way the first one did.
  9. Just watched the Final Cut last night, these are pretty much my thoughts as well. Thing is, it was so groundbreaking back then that we already know everything new it had to offer from all the copies it spawned. Same thing as when I read Watchmen for the first time, I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about, then I learned it was the first of its kind. Now on the second reading, I like it much more. I'd probably like BR more after more viewings, too, when instead of trying to get the plot, I could go detailhunting. I've got to say I was more pumped for it at the beginning when less than 10 minutes in they were already cursing in Hungarian!
  10. This friendly face just screams "Don't think I won't Force Rape you in your sleep."
  11. Mostly just games and shorts. To score a big movie like that, they would probably ask more experienced composers who could give the score depth and its own identity while still fitting into Williams' sound. I don't want to talk bad about Gordy, I haven't heard much from him, but his Battlefront is all style, no substance. He imitates the orchestration and mannerisms of Williams, and that's about it. The first game had a main motif with a few nice variations that he carries over to the second one. It's perfectly adequate for a video game which only aims to put you back into the world of the movies while not doing anything really new, but that doesn't necessarily show he has the skill to carry an entire movie. He may be able to do that, but with his one most popular and well-known work, he hasn't shown it yet.
  12. I'm sure they have very broad strokes of where they want it to go, Kennedy once said 7 was Ford's movie, 8 is Mark's (hope this doesn't mean Luke dies so soon) ans 9 was going to be Carrie's, but that's obviously not going to happen now. However, Rian said he had completely free hands.
  13. I'm in the process of replacing some of the horrible sounding source fanfares of the original Ben-Hur recording with the Tadlow rerecordings (i know, sacrilege, but they sound horrible) and I got the idea of creating a timpani overlay for the original The Galley which I always thought needed some (also I have a timpani fetish). So I took the first, clean set of fours from the Tadlow, looped them and changed the tempo around to fit the first minute of The Galley. It ends at a point I feel is should naturally end because the tempo changes around too much and it would take way longer to do the whole cue than I thought. Overlay: http://picosong.com/w3RZF/ Not perfect and not final combination of original cue and overlay: http://picosong.com/w3RZ9/ EDIT: Also replicated the film edit of Charioteers with the Tadlow recording: http://picosong.com/w3RTW/ Do we know why a certain number of cues sound so horrible while the majority could have been recorded yesterday?
  14. He emulates the prequel soundsape almost perfectly.
  15. Yes, knowing the CRs almost inside and out, listening to the OSTs was a breath of fresh air!
  16. I've only seen Ben-Hur for the first time today, but it sure as hell wasn't the last time. The movies that seem to appear on every top movie list are gangster dramas: Godfather 1-2, Scarface, Goodfellas. I will probably never watch any of these, I just have no interest. The genre for me is exhausted by the first 2 Mafia games and the Star Trek TOS episode "A Piece of the Action". The Fifth Element also gets a lot of praise, but I just couldn't make it through the first 20 minutes. I skipped forward to the diva song, then deleted it. There's something very unpleasant and offputting about it. On the other hand, Phantom Menace is one of my go-to fun adventure movies alongside Temple of Doom and Back to the Future. I know it's terrible filmmaking and most of the fun elements aren't intentional, and I certainly wouldn't qualify it as well-made or good, but it's such a glorious trainwreck that I just can't help enjoying the crap out of it. I also really like HP5 just as a fun movie if I ignore it's supposed to be an adaptation, I probably have a montage fetish.
  17. MusicBox Records has a handful of the FotR CR for 120.
  18. Well that sucks. I'm glad they didn't do anything like that for the new movies. In that case, I hope a deal will be made with Fox for the inevitable OG OT release for the 100th anniversary, so that the original logos and music can be in the movies, completely unaltered.
  19. Ben-Hur - I was expecting a 60 year old film with an almost 4 hour running time to be a bit of a slog to get through. Well I was completely wrong. I didn't immediately delete it from my hard drive, which means it gets the Official Holko Seal of Approval! It grabbed my attention from the start and seemed half as long at the end. The sets are impressive, the acting is good (apart from a few scenes which seem a little soap opera-ish today), Rózsa is fantastic, the atmosphere is immersive. The chariot race with its 30 minute buildup is a jaw-dropping and exciting spectacle. As insensitive as I've become to violent injuries through fake movie effects, murderous video games, and youtube fail compilations, I winced and "OOOOOOHH"-ed at every poor racer breaking half their bones, especially Judah's jump and Messala's fall - maybe because I was so immersed, or my brain subconsciously knew that these must have been actually done by real stuntmen in-camera. Watching this on the gigantic screens of the time must have been a hell of an experience. I also liked the Jesus aspect of the story more than I expected, it gave me a new perspective on the roots of religion, and fit in very well as a closure to Judah's story - that is, except for the miraculous healng, which I wish would've been left out. The lepers finally awaiting death with peace beause of JC's impact is a great end for them, and Judah finding them dead and NOT throwing a tantrum for once would've shown again how much he's grown. But I guess the folks of the 50's needed a sappy, sugary laugh-it-up enormous hug ending shot to keep them buying the new nuclear blast-resistant fridges. (I guess it's taken from the book, but if that's the case, I wouldn't mind changing it.) The core revenge story may be a bit cliched today, but I didn't mind it as much as in the next exhibit - Mad Max - That's quite a change, isn't it? Apart from a few fun stunts, I didn't think it had much to offer. The acting is not spectacular (but neither is it supposed to be), the story and characters are a bit chiched (apart from NIIGHT RIIIDER), and the look and feel of the world is pretty far from what I expected. Guess it's my fault for having watched Fury Road before. Once I started looking at it as a true documentary of Aussie life, it became a bit more fun (sorry!). I wouldn't deem it MEDIOCRE, it has a distinctive style and feel, but ultimately not my cup of tea. The lack of info about the armageddon bothered me at the beginning, but afterwards I realised it just added more to the feeling of chaos and uncertainty in this civilisation just starting to break down. I still look forward to the next installments.
