  1. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2003) Minority Report (2002) Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) The Lord of the Rings Trilogy other scores of the 21st century...
  2. Rise of Skywalker... the penultimate chapter of JW's film scoring career? Will Indy 5 be JW's last score?
  3. Okay maybe I was being way too emotional. But... I really believe that those who are ultra passionate about the new SW like the Reylo fans think of themselves as hipsters. Let's just call them SW hipsters.
  4. The story takes place literally zero seconds after The Force Awakens. So what has changed in the hearts and souls of the new goodies and the new baddies of the Star Wars Galaxy? What can a composer bring to the film? Turns out the goodies are so strong, that even their music doesn’t evolve beyond their appearances in TFA. And the baddies? They’re disposable so there’s no need for too much development for both Snoke and Kylo Ren’s themes. In the prequels, when legacy props or characters come to focus, we can hear how JW plants his devices of musical foreshadowing. But after the use of “Burning Homestead” in TFA, the powers that be are almost determined to have JW do the same whenever legacy stuff shows up. Oh Yoda! And there’s Luke and Leia! Let’s put in the concert pieces and be done with this. Let’s not really develop the themes of the OT because the OT characters don’t have arcs now. This is Star Wars for the postmodern SW hipsters of the 2010s. There’s no need to develop a second discussion on family and destiny between Luke and Leia. Slap on Luke and Leia to a conversation about hair and dice is enough for these Marvel addicts. Because that’s what space families talk about 30 years into their space fight against the political and spiritual forces of space darkness. Transtextuality trumps authenticity. “I've been dying a little bit each day since you came back into my life.” Yeah, Padme, this current revival of SW is just as bad as the one you’re in.
  5. Rey's Theme alone is enough for all the "use-the-force" moments in the film. Even for those "Reylo" moments with Kylo.
  6. Imagine a premiere of a new JW concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic...
  7. Setting: Hollywood Oligarchic Corporatocracy The Inciting Incident: Disney buys Lucasfilm for $4 billion Conflict: The paid elite vs The fans Climax: Palpatine comes back from the dead in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Final Scene: A reprise of "Binary Sunset"
  8. 9. So... Disney has been and will be asking contemporary America and the rest of Earth to revisit 60-to-80-year-old comic book characters in poorly conceived "stories" filled with messy CGI and soliloquies worse than "I don't like sand."
  10. This is simply the best cd cover I've ever seen.
  11. Season 1-7: I am Daenerys Stormborn, of House Targaryen, of the blood of Old Valyria – I am the Dragon’s Daughter. And I swear to you, that those who would harm you will die screaming. Season 8: Hey y'all, Crazy Dany's in town!
  12. My apprentice is a misogynistic fascist who likes S&M... I'm so fucked up.
  13. The ending is probably going to be something like last sequence of TFA, a torch-passing moment, and that horrible freeze-frame helicopter shot. The value of it comes from all the transtextual meaning that people will give to it. I wouldn't be surprised if film tries to frame all the events in the sequel trilogy as a vision/boy's fantasy that Luke had when he was looking at the twin suns. I just hope it won't be a wide shot of Galaxy's Edge.

  15. Wow! A JW CD for free! I don't know if the USCG Band will ever send their recordings to a non-U.S. citizen...
  16. I've spent enough time with the ST scores...
  17. I think the variance and variety of SW, TPM and TFA is what I really look for in a SW score, after 5 years of being a Jwfan. 😊 Back in 2014, when I first saw Star Wars, I never would’ve thought that I’d be able to hear Rey’s Theme in 2015. I didn’t even know the prequels existed. My heart goes to ROTJ because of Luke and Leia, but my brain enjoys SW, TPM and TFA the most. These 3 scores set up vastly different musical worlds for their sequels. They are also great lessons on composition and musical storytelling. TLJ, was a disappointment for me because it’s very self-aware and self-referential. There’s a lot of fourth-wall-breaking and gotcha moments going on in TLJ. I don’t think those ha-ha moments work very well with the seriousness and earnestness of those quotes of Leia’s Theme and Yoda’s Theme. But if it’s meant to be deconstructive, to be like Kylo Ren, I’d say TLJ as a musical work is a much more enjoyable and friendly kind of deconstruction than most of “modern” and “contemporary” music. I’m just glad the soundtrack is selling and SW is still a huge pop culture thing. TLJ may not follow previous lines of thoughts. It falls into the wild-card category of deconstructive music. It’s commercial. It’s a Disney soundtrack. It’s a pop culture thing. Still, if I have to choose between TLJ and every single piece of music that is meant to be deconstructive, I’d pick TLJ. TLJ may be JW’s eighth/ninth best SW score, but it still has heart.
