KittBash reacted to Thor in What do we know about Esther Williams -- John's mom?
A couple of other tidbits beyond the John Williams/John Nagle thing I've discovered while recently being sent some documents by a fellow Williams researcher and genealogy buff.

I was always a bit frustrated because I could find no information on Esther Towner Williams' profession. Was she just a housewife, or was she involved in showbiz too? Well, now I know. She was a dancer and choreographer, at least up until she got kids. So another person in the music/showbiz world surrounding our favourite composer.

Not only that, I found out that Joan, John's older sister (born in 1930), was a piano teacher, at least she was in her late 30s. I don't know what happened after that, as she's the most mysterious figure in the Williams family. But again -- another music connection!

It's staggering to think about how surrounded John Williams was with music in his early days -- from all of the family, even going generations back. It was all pre-destined.

KittBash reacted to Thor in John Williams could have been named John Nagle
I think this is a fascinating little piece of trivia.

If John Williams' dad hadn't taken the last name of his STEPdad Henry J. Williams, and instead kept the last name of his biological father Tom Nagle, the world's greatest film composer of all time would be named......John Nagle!

(that Tom/Thomas Nagle fellow -- sometimes spelled Neagle and Nagel -- is an interesting character, btw, but that's a story for another time).

I just stumbled on this wonderful interview with Chris Malone about the Empire Strikes Back soundtrack. He goes over a lot of what he talks about in his old pdf document and also corrects some mistakes he made. I'm only like 40 minutes into it but I've learned a ton about the exact formats that the OT scores were recorded onto, I'd highly recommend giving this a listen

I gotta disagree with your characterization that "no one cares that the song isn't included". I think a lot of fans care that the song isn't included --  they're super grateful and relieved that it was left off!

KittBash reacted to Jay in New 20 minute audio interview: John Williams At The Movies
Composer John Williams earned his 54th Oscar nomination for his score to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which allowed him to revisit the music he'd written for four earlier films, going back to Raiders of the Lost Ark, 42 years ago. As the years have passed and new characters have been introduced, there are new themes to explore, but also a memorable canon, filled with nostalgic, swashbuckling melodies. John Williams tells Brian Lauritzen he didn't start out thinking he'd write a full score for the film, but after writing a handful of themes, he found himself drawn into the project, and not wanting to let anyone else take it over.
