  1. So far I would have agreed; I liked it far better than Doyle's score, particularly the "ministry of magic" and "the kiss" cues. As for the new score... we will see, I am not very optimistic, I have to say... Anyway, listening to "the Robe" by Newman right now, and like it a lot. Just wish I would have known about the deluxe 2CD set earlier; it's at $125 now.
  2. What did they talk about? The Weather ? That it does...if only the same Williams-esque quality could extend throughout the whole score! Okay, I have heard two full cues today on aol radio, and none of them was close to William's style; very much like the last Hooper score, just... well, more boring.
  3. Glad I'm not the only one. I shot them an email today about it, so we'll see what's up. Haven't heard anything yet, either, but isn't it normal for them to take a while?
  4. Just listened to a track from the new Potter score (AOL Radio broadcasts one cue at the beginning of each hour); the cue was "Drink of Despair" (or so), and I'm pretty unimpressed. It's short and sounds like a reduced version of "possession" from the last score, without clear melody but with electronically distorted moans at the beginning... hmm, hope the rest is better...
  5. Hey, I have been to L.A. last week, and there are certainly a lot of things to do. I don't know any soundtrack stores, but Universal Studios is a good idea... the studio tour is, well, touristy :-), but a lot of fun (I was very happy to see props and sets used in the Jurassic Park, BttF, War of the World, Psycho, King Kong etc. etc. movies, and the actual theme park (with the Jurassic Park, Simpsons, and Mummy rides as well as the Terminator 3D and Waterworld shows are really recommendable (particularly if you are interested in films). The tour from the Observatory to the Hollywood sign must be very nice, too (I didn't do it yet), and one place that's been used as film location and is - at least for Paleo ;-) - generally of interest, is the La Brea Tar Pits with the Page Museum and Pleistocene Park. Nice beaches are near the Santa Monica Mountains/Malibu and the Crystal Cove State Park near Laguna Beach. Downtown L.A. is not very nice and at night pretty scary... we tried to avoid it as best as possible. Hope this helps you...
  6. It doesn't destroy the entire established timeline. This is an alternate timeline; the "old" one still exists, and in perfect condition, as does every episode and every movie and every book that talks about those events. Okay, I guess we could discuss about time paradoxa in movies for hours, but suffice to say that the Star Trek time line situation is murky at best; this was needless and takes away a lot of the fun of the series for me. Great if it works for you. Looking forward to a Star Wars movie or novel in which the Yuzhan Vong find a way to go back in time and kill Luke Skywalker before he destroys the Death Star; all these opportunities for a reboot, and the original Storyline would still be there, somewhere.... <_< Sorry, but I like it a bit more straightforward...
  7. Okay, he exaggerates, but I can understand him to some extent. The soundtrack didn't impress me at all (like so many others I am/was looking forward to these days), and I don't know either what exactly is so great about the movie (that happens to destroy the entire so far established story line and is full of ridiculous situations). It was reasonably entertaining, nothing more.
  8. Ordered Natty Gann right when I came back from a journey yesterday. I remember I liked the score a lot when I saw the movie.
  9. Germany (at a time when i-pods were not nearly as widespread as they are now, particularly for someone with a student's budget), and I came to the States to become a Ph.D student.
  10. Well, now I have. Back when I moved to the States, I was a proud owner of a disc-man, and since the number of CDs you can take on a plane is limited...
  11. Well, I may try it again some time. Right now it's in a box located at a friend's attic in a faraway country... (together with lots of CDs I am really missing)
  12. I liked the movie; it was nothing special, but reasonably entertaining, and it had a nice twist in the end. The score on the other hand is really no pleasure to listen to. I guess it fulfilled it's job in the movie (it did not leave any impression), but when I got the CD (one of these 1 Euro purchases from ebay), I was really disappointed. Never listened to it again; so it's possible it grows on people over time, but I didn't want to find out.
  13. I pretty much agree, and the highlights are few. It's not really a bad score, but more in the 3 star range for me (to respond to some recent posts dealing with score rating)
  14. Well, this and other recent interviews really seem to indicate something is happening. Now I would normally say that we survived the alien plot (it could really have been much, much worse, imo), so now we may get a REAL Indiana Jones story again (but then, if I think back to the monkey king story... ;-)) Btw, Ford called Lucas's idea for the plot "crazy but great", so that doesn't sound too reassuring... maybe the aliens come back, destroy Landmarks, and allow Indiana to ride the shock-wave on a trash can lid... Yay! Ah well, I'm, getting silly...
  15. yeah, it did. I almost thought it's my wireless again, only trouble the last few days. Btw, raiders is a great 5 Star score, but Last Crusade is an even better 5 Star soundtrack
  16. Hoping that I understood what you actually meant, is it really so surprising that many here like many of JW's scores very much? Most of the polls concern his major works, and in most cases I would agree they are 5 star scores. if you need to see bad poll results, why don't you ask us to rate "presumed innocent" or the like? I think I am a John Williams fan because I consider the majority (but by no means all) of Williams's score vastly superior to what the competition usually has to offer. Btw, what do you mean by "things are wrong when most people here rate Raiders better than E.T." (am confused, didn't you just say we consider everything 5 stars?)? I agree with that statement (E.T is too saccharine for my taste), so does that mean I'm a bad fan and should go to the Steve Jablonsky fansite instead?
  17. Movie: 5 Score: 5 Action cue: The boat scene Easily my favorite Indiana Jones movie, and on of my all time favorite soundtracks. Often listen to it several times a week; the mysterious to religioso-like cues are my favorite cues, but I enjoy the soundtrack from beginning to end.
  18. I just received the re-recording of "She" by Max Steiner. Remarkable how great the score sounds in this version compared to the original recording :-). I always liked the score (really one of the first great soundtracks, and doesn't sound dated at all), but the hiss on the older CD and the meager depth of the recording really damage the experience a lot. The team and ensemble doing the re-recording deserve a lot of praise; the music sounds vibrant and passionate (much better than your average "City of Prague" interpretation), and very much like the original regarding orchestration and tempo.... Anyone else here who thinks similarly?
  19. Understandable... the epic parts using ethnic instruments are breathtaking.
  20. Reading Pompeii by Robert Harris at present. So far very entertaining (and I hope they will, as planned, make a nice movie out of it). It was about time for a novel like this; the approach by Bulwer-Lytton really is a bit old-fashioned
  21. That score is still a gaping hole in my collection. Which versions of the soundtrack are available, and which one would you guys recommend to purchase?
  22. Still frequently listening to Last Crusade; I never get enough of it, it seems. Otherwise I rediscovered Timeline by Goldsmith, and I also listen to Angels and Demons a lot (so much better than Pirates imo)... like that new rhythm in 160 bpm, even though the score could have used a bit more originality.
  23. I had been warned about how bad this movies is, but when watching it I felt at least entertained and enjoyed sound and visual effects. Sure, the story had many flaws (e.g., is it a good idea to light a big warming fire in the desert when the machines are everywhere?), and the acting was only mediocre, but on the whole it did not ruin the franchise for me like it apparently did for many other people, and it certainly was not at all as bad as Godzilla etc. I just hope the next movie is better (and closer to my idea of the Terminator future - where are the crowded, dirty bunkers, constantly in danger of being discovered by the machines?). I guess it really depends on what expectations you have when watching a movie. For example, after hearing all the accolades for Star Trek, I was really underwhelmed when seeing the actual movie... all the absurdities and pseudo coolness, not to mention what the story meant for the other movies and most of the series... but that's a different story, right?
  24. I voted for: best: Empire worst: ROTJ - Ewok song I almost chose TPM for "worst", but I find the use of the emperor's theme in cheerful major too intriguing, so I decided to go for the rather dumb and saccharine ewok music...
