  1. It's one of his only score where you feel and hear that it was written on paper for an orchestra instead of just layers of synths. Is there any other score of his like that? (Pearl Harbor or something like The Last Samurai is still synths and synths over each other with banging reverbed drums).
  2. This is more about sound design than music. All those things above were done by Ben Burtt and Charles L. Campbell for the movie, not by the music department nor John. The Skywalker sound company had dozens of synths and other toys (like the ARP 2600), large mixing and equipment. Sampling was also not in it's infancy in 1982. It's been widely used in music in the 70's disco era and in electroacoustic since the 50's (which is closer to sound design than music)
  3. The problem always comes back to one thing : kryptonite. It's kinda boring when it's the only thing that can do something. It's always "we can't defeat him, but oh wait here's a kryptonite rock!"
  4. See that's why Superman is boring. He's either trolling us, or he's stupid. Why the handcuffs, they aren't needed!
  5. Are those made of Kryptonite? Or else it's just stupid. Oh again, like all Supes movies or any of his story, it's always him being stupid. The guy is stupid, really, because there's nothing he can't do.
  6. It's got to be Giacchino. Think a little about it, then understand that this man... was made... for the job. It's the way his career has been shaped up to become.
  7. There are a lot of other technical advantages of digital film that are beyond what the spectator see. We're talking about no more waiting for the film to be exposed, no more "lets hope tomorrow's dailies are good to decide of reshoots". It's all instantaneous for the director. He can have monitors giving him the complete look of the scene. Even more, with CGI, he can have previz of the final result of a scene in real-time while he shoots a scene! All this makes the differences even more important for digital shoots. It gives producers more leravage over the control of a film shoot, less chances of errors. It gives directors exact feedback on what he shoots. It gives DP exactly what the viewer will see in a cinema.
  8. As long as the original CD is made of alternate like the first trilogy, I'm in for both!
  9. I can't see Sony giving the Star Wars rights to anybody else. They probably will over-protect their rights until they don't have it anymore, it's logical business-wise to do so. Who knows how long it will take, we don't know the arrangement Lucasfilm LTD has with them. The brand is too valuable even if at an all-time low.
  10. It's just not really a good score, I think. The best moments are when you listen to previous material (which feels like copy pasted orchestrations of them). The best track is not even part of the standard soundtrack (The End). Oh and I can't get out of my head "Fishy fishy Pasta Pasta!"
  11. James is one of those composers who should cut a little on his project output. You can't sustain writing 5+ scores per year every year. Is it just about the money? Exposure?
  12. I don't know why people put so much emphasis on other people's experience of movies. We certainly don't do that for other art forms. It's yours and yours only.
  13. I would almost do a 3CD that's made of early (up until his he starts his gothical period, say until Superman or The Fury?) action cues, then another CD up until hmm.. . The Phanton Menace finally a modern Williams action cues.
  14. "Hey look up in the sky... it's a bird, it's a plane, no it's BWOOOOMMMM!!! "
  15. TLW is the only thing I can't listen to by Michael, because it's just so... not him. He hadn't found his style yet.
  16. So... the movie ends with him at his parent's grave? (since it's the same music as in the other movie)
  17. Yes, Spielberg can now do Star Wars his style! (I mean, did you see that crazy train chase? There were better ideas in that previz than the entire prequel trilogy together!)
  18. Because Summer movies are dyingl, they get released early in Spring instead. They probably understood that rushing the project would hurt, so it got pushed into the next year. It's not the first Spielberg movie that gets pushed around.
  19. How much stuff is in the movie that's not on the soundtrack?
  20. Let's not forget Elegy For Cello And Orchestra, which is a beautiful and great expansion of Regaining a Son.
  21. Berlioz, Symphonie Fantastique, last movement. It's pretty obvious!
