The Classical Music Recommendation Thread
Jurassic Shark replied to Muad'Dib's topic in General Discussion
Naxos has a good one at a decent price: http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2004/apr04/Walton_Belshazzar_Naxos.htm https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/34222/Walton_-_Belshazzar’s_Feast,_Crown_Imperial.htm -
I've been thinking about making appreciation threads for classical composers that members of the forum have shown interested in. And who knows - if we "pollute" the General Discussion with enough classical music threads, perhaps we'll get our own sub-forum! First out: Aaron Copland! The reason I start with him, is that I'm curious about this album on Testament, where the composer guides the Berliners through his 3rd symphony, previously unreleased until 2018. Has anybody heard it? I bet you have, @Disco Stu! https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/136213/Copland_conducts_Copland_-_Symphony_no.3,_Clarinet_Concerto.htm

The Aaron Copland (1900 - 1990) appreciation thread

I wonder what @Stu, the artist formerly known as Disco Stu, thinks about this recording of the 3rd. https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/139681/Copland_-_Orchestral_Works_Vol.4.htm -
I'm waiting for my copy of the deluxe edition to arrive from Europadisc, which has it at a good price: https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/219929/John_Williams_-_The_Berlin_Concert_(Blu-ray_Edition)_(CD_+_Bluray).htm https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/219927/John_Williams_-_The_Berlin_Concert.htm I've listened to the complete album once on Spotify, and my initial impression is that the tempi are good and the performances as well. There were a few unusual tempo changes and ritardandos that I'll have to get used to, but I suspect this one's going to get more rotation with me than both the Vienna album, although the Mutter arrangements are great, and the Dudamel album where the performance details are too obscured by the acoustics.

Williams arranged and conducted Previn album
Jurassic Shark replied to ricsim88's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
The Sound Stage album was remastered by Dutton in 2014. Now it seems to be out of print but Europadisc still has it, at a very good price. https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/119622/Andre_Previn:_Sound_stage!.htm -
Anybody seen/heard this take on Korngold's Die Kathrin? Any good? https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/143217/Korngold_-_Kathrin_versus_Zone_Libre:_Laventure_du_mere_(DVD-Audio_+_DVD-Video).htm

In plain Spanish, you mean. Except for the disc with Obsession, the Decca box doesn't seem to include anything that's not currently available on Australian Eloquence. https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/93202/Bernard_Herrmann_-_Film_Classics.htm https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/93203/Cinema_Spectacular.htm https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/93204/Miklos_Rozsa_-_Film_Scores.htm -
Concerti a Due Cori: I'm aware of one complete recordings on Decca and the same on Philips, and No. 1 and 3 on EMI. The Decca recording is now available on Australian Eloquence: https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/91870/Handel_-_Oboe_Concertos,_Ballet_Music,_etc.htm The 5th movement of the 2nd concerto is among my favourite pieces of baroque music. Concerto Grosso Alexander's Feast: I'm aware of complete recordings on Decca and Philips. Possibly recorded several times on both labels as it's a nice "filler piece".

A nice starter: Psycho (Varese re-recording) North by Northwest (original recording on Intrada or WaterTower, or Varese re-recording) Vertigo (Varese re-recording) Herrmann's Decca phase four albums https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/93203/Cinema_Spectacular.htm https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/93202/Bernard_Herrmann_-_Film_Classics.htm Salonen's album (with the L.A. Phil.!) -
It is, but it's also possible it has been released as a blu-ray-only edition - I can't keep track of all the editions anymore. It's back in stock, btw. https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/148226/John_Williams_in_Vienna_(CD_+_Blu-ray_Audio).htm https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/8785414--john-williams-in-vienna-cd-blu-ray-video-edition
