Jay 37,372
http://www.thewrap.com/awards/column-post/77-original-score-oscars-smallest-field-23534Last week came news that the musical scores for "True Grit," "Black Swan," "The Kids Are All Right" and "The Fighter" had been ruled ineligible by the Academy's music branch, either for using too much pre-existing music or for relying too heavily on songs. Now that Academy voters have received the list of scores that did qualify, we can add "Toy Story 3" to the list of high-profile scores that aren't in the running – not because the branch ruled it ineligible, but because composer Randy Newman opted not to submit it.Most of the other scores thought likely to contend for nominations are included on the Academy list of 77 qualifying achievements, from Hans Zimmer's "Inception" to Daft Punk's "Tron: Legacy," from Trent Reznor's and Atticus Ross' "The Social Network" to Rachel Portman's "Never Let Me Go," plus Alexandre Desplat's "The King's Speech" and "The Ghost Writer," John Powell's "How to Train Your Dragon," Danny Elfman's "Alice in Wonderland" and A.R. Rahman's "127 Hours."Notable composers whose work isn't on the Oscar list: Harry Gregson-Williams for "Unstoppable," Desplat for "Tamara Drewe" and Dario Marianelli for "Agora."The list of 77 eligible scores is by far the lowest number of qualifying entries on any of the eight AMPAS "reminder lists" that went out with ballots on Monday, most of which contain the names of more than 200 films.(Animated Feature and a few of the shorts categories have smaller fields.)The full list of qualifying film scores:THE A-TEAMALICE IN WONDERLANDTHE AMERICANANIMAL KINGDOMANOTHER YEARAPAPORISBABIESBARNEY'S VERSIONBIUTIFULBLACK TULIPBROOKLYN'S FINESTCHARLIE ST. Kendal_Ozzel 36
Rahman will get undoubtedly get a nomination, per the Funny Foreign Name rule, as well as the Can We Give This Guy More Oscars Than Jerry? rule.Powell, however, must win. Or else!
BLUMENKOHL 1,068
That is a miserable list of candidates. I like a sum total of four of the those scores. Deathly Hallows, Tron, Social Network, How To Train Your Dragon. None of which will be nominated.
David Coscina 3
I do hope Powell gets a nom and wins. If an animated score ever deserved to win it's HTTYD which, in my opinion, is very much superior to Giacchino's UP! from last year. I keep listening to it and find more and more detail in its construction. The level of compositional technique alone is a lot deeper than I have heard from scores in the past few years. Morlock 11
I would nominate:The A-TeamThe Social NetworkClash of the TitansIron Man 2Yogi Bear Why does The A-Team get dumped in with those scores? It's the most enjoyable Silvestri score in a while!
Richard Penna 3,694
Not a very exciting list really, and tbh, I'm reluctant to make any sort of list, as the academy has proven themselves incapable of choosing on musical merit for the most part. But I'll be very happy if Powell receives recognition. Generally, he's got far more talent and individuality than most on that list.

It's the most enjoyable Silvestri score in a while! It has some good action cues, but I think G.I. Joe is better.
Quintus 5,399
This year will mark one of the dullest affairs in its tired old history. Needless to say I won't be following the outcome.
Ollie 1,059
Wow, the continuation of the decline in movie music continues.Frankly I'd nominate Let Me In. May not be Oscar caliber but it sure was one of the best out of that list.I would nominate:The A-TeamThe Social NetworkClash of the TitansIron Man 2Yogi Bear

Jay 37,372
I don't expect Let Me In to be nominated. Not that it shouldn't, I just don't expect the academy to do it
OneBuckFilms 323
You may be right, Jason, but the film has had some critical acclaim, and it is apparently very "artistic" in nature, and it was a fail at the box office.I'd say it meets the criteria for the Academy to love it. Koray Savas 2,251
All I know is that The King's Speech is going to be nominated and will win. So I'm not going to even try predicting the other noms.
David Coscina 3
if The King's Speech wins, I won't mind as I feel Desplat has been robbed in the past but, in my opinion, the most deserving of this award is Powell. He did a tremendous job on Dragon.
Taikomochi 1,136
I am rooting for but not expecting Let Me In. HTTYD is meh to me. Though, I don't expect Powell will be nominated, no matter how good it is.
