crocodile 8,027
The end of the year is almost upon us (less than two weeks now) and no more major releases planned (except maybe for Jack Reacher). I wonder what are your favourite scores? I propose to divide it into several categoriesTOP 5 new film scores (by which I mean all the scores released for this years' films)TOP 5 film score re-releases (all the specialty labels' stuff; a favourite category for many, I'm sure)Other music (games, TV etc.) (if you want share something worthwhile written for small or computer screen)Personal highlight of the year. (your single best film music related memory, can be an album, concert, whatever)Disappointment of the year (same as above, but inverted)You don't have to post 5 scores. If you just liked one then say so. I just want to know what you liked. The order doesn't matter, unless you want it to.Any other comments (honorary mentions, industry trends, whatever you feel like to add) also welcome.Karol

Jay 37,421
Sorry, I was a bit hasty there. But what if I typed up a whole post, then went and saw Jack Reacher on Friday and it became my fave film of the year, then when my OST arrived on Jan 4th it became my favorite score of the year. I'd have to change everything

BLUMENKOHL 1,068
Fuck it, I'll start:TOP 5 new film scores1. John Carter2. The Hobbit3. Lincoln...4. Skyfall5. Mission Impossible Ghost Protoco The Amazing Spider-Man Personal highlight of the yearThe very first time I put in John Carter and listened to it, before having seen the movie.Around 2:42 of the first track "A Thern for the Worse" when things slow down I started getting this weird feeling/sensation. By 4:27 it grew stronger. And once the basses pick up around 5:01 I was wrapped in a sensation of chills, wonder, excitement. I get chills from music all the time. But this was different. There are only about half a dozen times in my life I've gotten this sensation from music. When I feel genuinely transported to the universe the music is painting. This was one of those cases.

BLUMENKOHL 1,068
I thought I would. Then I heard it and gave it a 3.5/5 stars. I've grown to like it more since then. Steef and I have eerily liked it. Steef to impress Alice. Me because I genuinely enjoy it. Still, it's a huge drop off from my first three to Skyfall. indy4 155
My responses to the first two will suck, but I think my response to #3 and to a lesser extent #4 will make up for it.New film scores:I've seen more movies this year than ever before, but the only soundtracks I've purchased have been for Lincoln and 4 tracks from TDKR. So I guess that makes my list:1. Lincoln2. TDKR(to be inserted, probably between the two already inserted scores, when I finally by the soundtrack: The Hobbit)Film-score rereleases:Only one I've purchased is The Long Goodbye, and I have yet to pick that one up...long story. I'll have it soon though!Personal highlight: Meeting John Williams!!!!!!!!!!!!!Disappointment: I'd say either a) hearing The Hobbit score as presented in the film--what a total rehash (I'm told the CD presentation is better) or b) learning that the theme used in the Lincoln trailer was based on a theme by Copland. This isn't any major theft because JW changes it a lot, but still.

In fact, the latter is far worse. At least in film, the Hobbit still had way more original material than what was in TDKR.

gkgyver 1,646
I fail to see the specialness in John Carter. That score pummels me with so much of the usual action fare that I can't hold up my attention for very long.

KK 3,307
Best it could be? Joey, literally copying and pasting past music is most certainly not the best any composer can do, including Zimmer. And edit jobs of past film scores doesn't qualify as "continuity".

Koray Savas 2,251
The Dark Knight Rises is far from a cut and paste job, I don't get why everyone is all over that score for reusing past themes.
KK 3,307
It's not just re-using past themes Koray, if you listen, Zimmer's literally taken past action passages and put them into the new score with little to no variation. It's even worse in film. Just listen to the last track.
Koray Savas 2,251
Well I haven't seen Batman Begins for years and rarely listen to the score so that could be why. I recognized the themes but didn't notice any striking similarities in the construction of the action cues. The Dark Knight is mostly Joker and Dent music, which there is none of the former in this one and only little of the latter.
KK 3,307
I wouldn't say TDK is just Joker and Dent music. It has lots of new action material. I don't remember whether it was "Like a Dog Chasing Cars" or "The Dark Knight" (probably the latter), but one of those cues got copied into the finale action cue of TDKR note for note with little variation. Also, there were several portions from both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight that crosses over like that as well. I would post track times and all that, but I'm far too tired at the moment.
