Mad Max doesn't make more money because many people think it looks ridiculous or stupid. I have heard that comment a lot.

Jurassic World Smashes June Opening Day Record with $83 Million

It was looking pretty good on Friday that Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World would be beating the previous June opening weekend record set by Man of Steel when it reported $18.5 million just from Thursday previews, but business was so insane on Friday that it’s now being reported that the Chris Pratt-starring blockbuster has grossed an estimated $82.8 million in 4,273 theaters.

That’s just over $19,000 per theater and it would make it the third-highest opening and single day ever after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2‘s $91.1 million and Avengers: Age of Ultron‘ $84.4 million, putting it ahead of Marvel’s The Avengers $80 million back in 2012. The latter currently holds the opening weekend record with $207.4 million.

That puts it well ahead of the previous June opening and single day record held by The Twilight Saga: Eclipse with $68.5 million from June 30, 2010 and also ahead of the $75.7 million opening day for The Dark Knight Rises, which ended up with $160.9 million in its opening weekend in 2012.

Based on the Thursday numbers, we originally were thinking Jurassic World would end up with $130 million, but considering how much bigger the movie was on Friday, it’s now looking closer to $180 million or even more! Could it make a play for the $200 million plus opening of Avengers? It’s become one of those insane box office phenoms that only come about once every couple of years and apparently everybody is going out to see Universal Pictures’ revived franchise. With it already scoring an “A” CinemaScore, the sky is the limit for Jurassic World right now.

Check back on Sunday for the full box office report to see how it fared.

The theater i saw it in was packed. And when i left people were already lining up for the next showing.

Also, there was actually a bit of an applause when the credits started to roll, which is something ive never heard in any showing of a new film here, ever.

Koray is right it happens all the time here. My screening of JW Thursday night had applause at the end. So weird.

Applause is just a natural extension of excitement. If you were thoroughly entertained by a movie, sometimes applauding is involuntary.

I've never applauded though.

Australians get a bit embarrassed by applauding or cheering in cinemas, which is why it doesn't happen here often. But it sort of happened at the end of Jurassic World. People started and hesitated, then became more enthusiastic.

I don't mind enthusiastic applause. I totally get it with blockbusters/crowd-pleasers...I know what Koray's saying, I think a lot of people (at least in the US) treat movies like Jurassic World like a sporting event. It's not really for showing appreciation of the movie as much as just the fun of it. Makes it a more social experience. It's a movie, you're already pretending that dinosaurs still exist so why not take the extra step and pretend it's happening in front of you. I'd feel awkward doing it myself but then I don't really get super into it with sports either. But I've clapped at midnight shows and stuff where the energy of the crowd is ramped way up.

The thing that I don't really understand is when there's polite applause at the end, like for a serious drama or something. I got that recently with The Imitation Game...credits rolled and there was a few seconds of this really limp, mild applause. That's weirder to me, that's more like people are just doing it without even thinking about it.

People who applaud at the end of and during movies are the scum of the earth! They ruin many, many otherwise great moments. Thankfully, it only happens at movies geared towards a younger audience.

I don't mind people reacting to what they're hearing. It's a good thing. There are limits, of course.

Even when obnoxious it's still not quite as annoying as when people are walking out during end credits of live music to projection performances. Happens all the time, every single time, even. That is really disrespectiful.

You know what makes it worse? "Darth Vader and Stormtroopers walking onto a stage" cliche. It's just completely undoes the power of music.
