Josh500 1,615
Here's the definition of "historical drama" for the purpose of this thread: a film based on or (loosely) inspired by a true story (no fantasy or science fiction!), that takes places in the past. Note that the Indiana Jones movies are not historical dramas because they're clearly fantasy... My list: 1. Schindler's List 2. War Horse 3. Saving Private Ryan 4. Memoirs of a Geisha 5. Born on the Fourth of July 6. JFK 7. Catch Me If You Can 8. The Patriot 9. Munich 10. Empire of the Sun Honourable mentions: 11. Far and Away 12. Seven Years in Tibet 13. Nixon 14. Angela's Ashes 15. Bespin 8,487
Not everybody has the same sense of historical drama. I had the best list if you want to know! (Midway and JFK where the only two left out from my previous Top 10) War movies are not all historical btw. This is such a "common" story, you know there are thousands of such stories that happened back in those days. I mean, two people that came to America struggled to have a good life, then fell in love with each other, and finally got a happy end. That's basically it. I guess you'd call Star Wars a historical drama because it's about people who fall in love, family issues, and after all, we know it takes place "a long time ago"... Josh500 1,615
It's fiction but against a historical backdrop. By the way, same thing with Saving Private Ryan. The story of a bunch of soldiers tasked with saving another soldier who lost two brothers.... That's admitttedly fiction. It never happened. But it's historical fact that the Americans were involved in fighting the Nazis. Or so we're told, at least. Jurassic Shark
