Uni 306
Here are some 20 minute "primers" you can try out for some of my favorite Giacchino scoresA great idea, Jay, and much appreciated—though I never find it a burden to sit through the whole "concert" to get a bird's-eye view and find the material that appeals to me.For instance . . . I enjoy some of the guy's softer moments as well, and would've included "Mom's Necklace" and "Alice Projects on Joe" on the Super 8 list. I think both Star Trek scores are great, and best enjoyed in their expanded/complete versions.I've picked up John Carter (haven't had a chance to listen to it yet), and I'll start with the pieces you suggested . . . mostly because I'm curious now to compare them to the rest of the score, and get some inkling on what it is that makes Jay tick. Completely identify with his inability to constantly write write write. Composing isn't one's whole life, it's just a very important part of it. Of course, when I was younger, the midnight oil burning, tortured artiste waiting for inspiration bullshit seemed like the natural mode of creative existence to me. Luckily it doesn't take long to get to know better.Definitely. The starry-eyed notions amateurs cultivate about the creative process are always filled with mental fluff about inspiration, starving for the craft, living in a hut somewhere, etc.—whether it's composing, or writing, or painting, or whatever. If you want to "behave" like your ideal of an artist, you can chase visions like this and get very little done (but hey, at least you can claim you're "misunderstood"). If you want to be an artist, you'll develop a discipline, stop making excuses, and get it done. It's not about a lifestyle. It's about the craft. Jay 37,416
It was pretty damn hard to diffuse a score down to only 20 minutes. 30-40 would have been radically easier
Uni 306
Exactly. Just imagine trying to do that with a Williams classic like E.T. or Close Encounters—or even one of the SW movies. Sure, you could get it down to 20 minutes, but you'd be gritting your teeth over the stuff you'd have to leave out.Nah . . . while I sincerely appreciate the effort you made, Jay, in the end I'm a whole-score person myself, examining the use of themes and motifs, looking for the subtle stuff in less prodigious pieces, all of that. Thanks again, though. Max 141
Yep, Giacchino is set to score Toy Story That Time Forgot!Composer Michael Giacchino is set to score this special. Giacchino revealed a cool nerdy tidbit: his horn player owns the horn used to create the iconic sound in the original Planet of the Apes, and they plan to use that horn in the Toy Story That Time Forgot score.Source: http://www.slashfilm.com/toy-story-time-forgot-comic-con-2014/This could be a really cool project! The whole Battlesaurs concept sounds like it will provide some interesting material for Giacchino to score.

Max 141
I think this was recorded in October 2013, if I remember correctly. I remember Giacchino Instagramming a mute video of the strings playing, followed by a picture of a cue sheet with "Cake Walk of Shame" on it.In this interview, director Shawn Levy talks about how he managed to land Giacchino for the score.I'm still hoping for an eventual release for this! Even though it has happened before, I can't believe that someone wouldn't release a Giacchino score, especially after they went to lengths to have him score the film to begin with. Max 141
I hope that Disney/Pixar announces a soundtrack for Giacchino's Toy Story That Time Forgot score soon. The TV special airs tomorrow night, but so far there hasn't been any word on a soundtrack release--which is strnage, since Toy Story of Terror!'s soundtrack was announced almost two weeks in advance. Anyway, some of the reviews for the special have had positive things to say about the score. For instance, Speaking of what makes the movie so amazing (and heart-tugging), Michael Giacchino contributes an absolutely wonderful score. It goes from being adventurous and militaristic (he actually used the same horns from the original "Planet of the Apes") to being very sweet and cuddly, and there isn't a false note in the entire score. Giacchino has become an all-star member of the Pixar team and his work here is some of the very best.

Max 141
I haven't been able to find anything else about this online, but Wikipedia lists Giacchino as the composer for David O. Russell's film Joy.I know it's just Wikipedia, but I wonder if this might actually happen. The film doesn't come out until December 25, so Giacchino's schedule would be clear in time for him to work on it. I think it could be an interesting score for him. Max 141
The short in front of Inside Out is a musical short called Lava, and Giacchino isn't scoring that one. They haven't announced the short film for The Good Dinosaur yet.
