Regular mouthwash use is your one way ticket to various oral cancers.

Flossing is important to prevent gingivitis and gum disease which most adults past 40 have to a degree (if you don't floss).

What are your thoughts on the Waterpik...type flossing devices? Do they work?

Combining smoking+ alcool leads to oral cancer. More smoking though.

Waterpick. You mean those devices that shoot pressurized water?: Can't replace flossing.

If used with moderation (like not repeat the process very few weeks)

I can make some people's teeth more sensitive to cold liquids

Yes. As does performing oral sex on many partners.

Really? You can get cancer from oral sex?!? I know you can get various other diseases, but cancer was a new one to me.

He probably means AIDS but then it has to get bloody.

No, he's correct. Not that I would know from experience.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_sex#HPV_and_oral_cancer_link

According to at least one study "people who had one to five oral-sex partners in their lifetime had approximately a doubled risk of throat cancer compared with those who never engaged in this activity and those with more than five oral-sex partners had a 250% increased risk."

You could serve her with some sort of detergent. It won't change much, but will look better under the "cause of death" heading.

ROTFLMAO

Cancer, not AIDS. ;)

Wow.... There are times I log on to board and just have to say wow....................

On the other hand I guess my odds for throat cancer are great.

Well, I'm European. ;)

Moving swiftly on...

I just wanna say, I brush my teeth twice a day (in the morning and at night, before I go to bed), I floss once a day, and I use mouthwatch every day. And I never had a cavity, either.

Ever since I turned 25 or so, I take amazingly good care of my body, somehow.

I thought you were Japanese?

I'm only part Japanese.

Better those those eyes fixed.

You better get your brain fixed. Something's not right there.

KM, one more dentistry question.

Floss first and brush away....

or Brush and then Floss?

It's all about flossing first. Then you get to brush away whatever gunk you've disturbed!

Um...I'd rather trust a community maintained encyclopedia to a single GP.

GP is acronym for "Glorified Pstatistician" ;)

They basically take your numbers, look at obvious physical evidence and attempt to fit you and your collection of symptoms into a stereotype to determine if you're dying or have a cold. This works wonderfully most of the time, but it's liable to fail you miserably as well.

That's not to say go online to diagnose yourself (worst idea ever), but the information there can be very valuable, even good ol' Wikipedia.

Like Mark O, I only brush my teeth once a day, in the mornings. I don't use mouth wash or flossing but my teeth have been always kept in good condition. All though last year I had to have a root canal done for one tooth. Some how that got infected but luckily I caught it early enough for them so they didn't have to remove the tooth. I've never really had any cavities either. I've had to have some fillings done but that was about it.

Edit: With me and my heart condition I've always dreaded about getting married and having to put my spouse through the hell associated with this as far as surgeries go. I mean the reason why is because of how much hell my own parents and family have gone through every time I've had to have a heart surgery.

Dawn told me she doesn't care about that and will be here for me no matter what. Hell before we even got together she said she wished she could have been here when I had my 5th heart surgery in 2009.

Edit #2: Regarding flossing, my dentist told me you should always floss after you brush your teeth.

We're not talking about a diagnosis, we're talking about oral sex causing cancer. Sounds like bullshit to me. I'm sure a MD would know if it's true or not.

Honest to God, I had no idea he was actually asian!

It's not much of a defence maybe, but still...

You're a fucking hypocrite is what you are.

I floss after brushing when I've removed most of the plaque . Flossing is just for the interdental area. But it doesn't really matter what order you do it

The article says oral sex increases your chance of acquiring the good ol' pap. HPV increases your risk of cancer oral cancer (when in the mouth) or penile/cervical cancer (on your genitals). It makes sense.

Basically....sechs responsibly.

I want you to be my dentist. You make common sense.

That would be more a "possible" cause. In real live setting it's smoking+alcool for oral cancer (like a chain smoker who regularly drinks hard liquor and has poor oral hygiene)

The direct link of cancer with HPV is more cervical cancer in women

I think you're a dickhead for saying this!

Like I said, get your brain fixed.

I brush whenever I shower, so once a day. Used to floss a few times a week but slowly stopped.

Don't flos. Running a wire along your teeth and gums will over time cause slight wear on the enamel, weakening it and making it easier for bacteria to nestle there.

Dentists actually don't want you to have too healthy a mouth. They can't make any money from you.

Why do dentists wanna see you every 6 months? So they can get some cash from you. No other reason.

I don't get a card from my Dermatologist every 6 months saying it's that time of year again...

No.It'll end up costing you a lot more for periodontal treatments if you don't floss

Posted

Yea, because the bits of food stuck between your teeth will begin to decay, which attracts bacteria and causes other problems like insanely bad breath.

Think about eating corn on the cob or a big piece of steak, getting bits of food stuck between them, and just leaving them there instead of fighting them with your tongue or floss. I certainly don't have the Jedi powers to just ignore that kind of gunky buildup.

Besides, floss is made of relatively soft nylon or a plastic like Teflon or polyethylene. If you're using floss made of wire, you're doing it wrong.

Posted

I would think common sense would kick in if you have some food or something stuck between your teeth. I get it out.

However, for some reason, I don't get a lot of tartar buildup on my teeth.

By the way, has anybody here experienced mild, moderate, or severe hearing loss at any point in your lives, temporary or not?

I've had the flu the past week, and my ears feel funny ever since. They feel plugged somehow, and my hearing seems to have been reduced every so slightly, it seems...

The worst thing that can happen to a JW fan is probably total hearing loss! :P

Posted

I'm in the same situation with the flu, a cold remained afterwards and I can't hear much on my right ear. But the doctor told me it should go away in a week or so.

Posted

my hearing has been shit all my life.

You serious?

Why? Is it a genetic thing?

Well, I can still hear pretty well actually, but they seem clogged somehow...

And that's not ear wax, because it started with the flu!

Posted

Well, you said your hearing has been shit all your life. What do you mean?
