Tommy Pearson is interviewing John Williams for ClassicFM on Thursday (LA Time), and ClassicFM are inviting their Facebook fans to submit questions. Go for it!

"There is a kind of closeness that can be developed with members of an orchestra - a love affair in which you and a body are breathing together, pulsing together, lifting and sinking together... Perhaps i'm making this sound too lurid and sexual - it is sort of sexual, but it's with a hundred people" - Leonard Bernstein

Great!!
"It's still baffling to me. I sit down with a pencil and a piece of paper and do my best... The remarkable thing is that my music is heard by billions of people." --John Williams

"Let me say, however, there is no "next" John Williams. Sadly, he is unique--- a figure who simultaneously embodies and transcends the music of all the masters of film music who preceded him (much like Brahms and Wagner of the Romantic era). He comes from a time when the craft of music in film was still one of the ear, heart and mind. Today, sadly, the craft is largely technical. Most composers do not conceive their music "inwardly" but rather at the computer--- and with rather limited skills, musically, at that. The inner spirit knows no boundaries--- our plastic abilities, sadly, do. John is a man of spirit, heart, intellect and soaring music." -- Conrad Pope about John Williams

Good ones Maurizio. The ones I would ask were basically put by this fellow David Kay... But some very good ones overall. Though some of them, the more well informed fan would already know the answer ;)

Decent little station this, even if they do play far too many piano concertos for my tastes. Saturday evenings is when they play movie stuff.

Questions submitted - but I'll bet they won't ask questions from uber fans because frankly, we are asking very detailed questions that few care to know (and I do hope I'm wrong). Does anyone know how to actually hear the interview or when it will be broadcast?

Yeah, they'll probably pick mostly the "fun" ones. I definitely don't think they're going to ask him something like "What do you think of people who look down on your compositions?", but I hope they ask him about his thoughts on current film music...if he's even paying much attention. I know he's said he doesn't really watch movies much.

I think this interview will be a little more in-depth than the typical "What was your favorite film to compose for, which is the most meaningful, etc." Definitely looking forward to it and I like the fact they're taking questions from fans.

My question would be why did he suddenly stop conducting film music concerts with LSO years ago, and apparently won't do it again ...

I like how once we started asking questions most of the "what's your favorite film score" questions that have already been answered time and time again stopped coming. It's like these people realized they were way out of their league.

Anywho, I really hope Mr. Pearson asks some of our questions.

He finds long distance travelling too uncomfortable.

Tommy's questions will be very good, worry not. Hopefully he'll use some of those good ones posted on the link. I doubt the 'Thomas & the King' one will make the cut though.

I think music is a stream of some kind. It could be blood. It could be water. It could be ether. Whatever it is it seems to be a living, organic force that’s in motion, that serves humanity and is part of humanity and part of what describes us as humans. We sing, play, dance, all the things that we do. And there is a vibrant and great literature we have been given. ... As musicians, we join the stream. We swim in the stream with all the other millions of music makers. It’s a life force, a strong one, surrounding us and we are part of it. -John Williams-

It has never been "officially" announced, but yep, this is the reason why he hasn't left the US soil since 2005.

"Hi everyone - thank you so much for all your questions. I was able to put about 5 of them to John Williams in yesterday's interview. Of course, I can't promise how many of them will make it into the final edit but I hope you'll listen out for the programme later this month - Williams is a fascinating and charming guest, talking about his extraordinary and unparalleled career."

Karol
From a storytelling point of view, from a directing point of view, there is one thing I associate with what he does, which is calm. There is such an inherent calm and inherent trust of the one powerful image, that he makes me embarrassed with my own work, in terms of how many different shots, how many different sound effects, how many different things we’ll throw at an audience to make an impression. But with Kubrick, there is such a great trust of the one correct image to calmly explain something to audience. There can be some slowness to the editing. There’s nothing frenetic about it. It’s very simple. There’s a trust in simple storytelling and simple image making that actually takes massive confidence to try and emulate. - Christopher Nolan
