  1. I liked the volume 2 much better that the volume 1. I don't really know what have would happened it he had finally made it into only one volume. I saw Sideways yesterday, loved it again. Can read it here
  2. There's nothing in or out here. These are the proposals of the nominees, so if you think it should be there, just propose it.
  3. First of all, I'd like to thank all of those who already voted. Thanks for taking the trouble to spend some time with this "experiment". Secondly, I will encourage those who have entered the thread and not voted, who have been a lot (159 views and 6 replies!). I think this can be a rather interesting thing and that's why I was determined to do it. We talk a lot about John's music, but there's life beyond John. And there will have to be when, you know, it happens... I think this is a good way to discover new styles, new composers and share opinions about them. Besides, it's the perfect way to know where to look in this 2006 when John's output is likely to be non-existant. So please, guys VOTE!!
  4. It was actually the niÑa I love AotC rendition BTW
  5. Since fortunately I'm still among the living, these are the non-JW awards categories. Since I liked the idea of the secret votes, I've thought for the first ten days you should post your nominees (up to 4 in each categoriy). After that, 4 days to pick up the winners among the final nominees in secret voting through PM. That way this ends at the same time than Justin's part. So, pick your proposal for nominees. These are my proposals: Best composer: Danny Elfman, James Newton Howard and Dario Marianelli Best score: Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, King Kong and The Brothers Grimm Best theme: Love theme from Corpse Bride, The factory theme from Charlie and..., Love theme from King Kong and Harry Potter's love Best cue: Finale from Corpse Bride, Main Titles from Charlie and..., Central Park from King Kong Best action cue: none Best dramatic cue: Finale form Corpse Bride, Central Park form King Kong Best comedy cue: Rita Skeeter Best main titles / end credits / montague: Main Titles from Charlie..., End Titles I and II from Corpse Bride Best dramatic score: none Best comedy score: none Best fantasy / sci-fi score: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, King Kong and The Brothers Grimm I've actually found it hard to find candidates. I think it's ok if one edits the proposals after posting since it might just be a matter of memory (as long as it is done in time). So, let the votes start

  7. Well, since I was tired and ectremely dissapointed last noght, I decided to go to sleep. First of all I must say it was a really cool experince to share with some of you the Oscar night (and night meant moon, stars and silence in the neighbourhood for the europeans who stayed till 4 in the morning to see the guitar thing win). It was my first Oscar night and though it was dissapointing, I liked this international community thing getting together virtually. That said, I must say I just don't care if John wins another Oscar anymore. Since the last years seem a joke to me, if he wins I won't have no option than thinking it's another joke. The academy knew Santaolalla was winning, and for so they chose Salma Hayek to give the prize. It's an usual practice for them (remember Penelope Cruz giving the award to Pedro Almodovar or Sofia Loren to Roberto clown Begnini). The moment I saw Salma on stage I told Peio John had lost, and it was true. Memoirs of a Geisha was the best score yesterday. It might not have been the perfect partner for Star Wars and co., but this year was a mild year for score, except for Williams. The Chairman's Waltz alone was better than any of the other music nominated, and that was only one of the themes he has awarded us with this year. It's a real shame that the nominations-wins ratio has gone up to 9:1. Just ridiculous and only surpassed by poor Thomas Newman. At least they didn't nominated him this year either. Brokeback Mountain has now entered the list of original score winners, and it's probably one of the ones that least deserved it (The Full Monty has the top place, a situation that says a lot from the AMPAS: they still can't make the difference between the score and the music you hear in a movie). Awarding Crash the best picture is again very significative. Good picture and good intentions, no doubt but, have you AMPAS taken the trouble to see Short Cuts and Magnolia? Probably not, otherwise you wouldn't have picked a movie that was already made twice. I'd dare to say three times, if tou consider Traffic. But at that times (at least the first two) you didn't nominated those movies. By the way, Crash wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for the old pal who get the honorary, Short Cuts' director Mr Altman. AMPAS, you'll never learn.
  8. I saw BBM yesterday. I hope I'm wrong, but the score is winning. It's really a shame, and I have facts here: - It's really short (the 13 minutes thing is true) - The main theme, which I would not consider even a theme, is played over and over again - The variations in these loops are from few to non-existant, and that is specially irritating taking into account that the same arragements are used for the cowboys taking care of the herd and Michelle Williams realizing her husband is gay (sorry for the spoiler, but i think we all know the story). That is simply non acceptable and ridiculous. Unluckily, the combination of notes I refuse to call a theme is somehow memorable. That, linked to a movie being expected to be the winner of the night will attract enough votes to throw Geisha away. I just hope I'm wrong.
  9. In what they call the big fat chart in oscarwatch.com, out of 16 predictions, 9 go to Geisha and 7 go to Brokeback Mountain.
  10. Huh? Do you think we live on the moon? Of course the Academy Awards will be live on TV next Sunday (or rather Monday ) and I'll be there. I'm talking about ONLINE channels. For those who might not have access to the show because in their countries no channel will broadcast it or it's a pay channel.
  11. Good luck! And for Europeans, I've been looking for online channels that might broadcast it. Read it here
  12. I listened to it and in my opinion it needs an action cues suite similar to the one you made for AotC (that I loved). The absence of The Flag Parade, Escape from naboo and The Tide Turns, as well as the battle of Naboo and Rescuing the Queen has no excuse. I think you should really consider adding an action suite with material from those cues. But, then again, this is my opinion.
  13. Star Wars. Some old 2 tapes set had the fault. Let's say 5 years old.
  14. Is there a way to tune this through the Internet?
  15. Don't worry. At least you dared to ask. I had to google and google to finally learn it Shouldn't we do a FAQ with this kind of things?
  16. I just listened to both shows. If I were someone who hadn't listened to any of the scores before, I see no reason to even nominate Brokeback. And yes, he doesn't seem to like it. He kind of likes the idea of having a theme trying to develop as that happens to teh charactres in the mvie, but I think he prefers afull development of themes. Next week he'll say his candidate.
  17. Empire, I just love the transitions, the new versions written for the end credits and how it flows as a whole.
  18. I actually wasn't much into film scores till some years ago, so iu listened to songs. But I felt I needed something else and John williams appeard in my life. Now i listen mainly to soundtracks, but I still listen to songs sometimes (britpop mainly).
  19. I also love Leaving Hogwarts. I always thought Williams is very good at farewell cues, and leaving Hogwarts is a magnificent example. It has a 'why does it have to end already' feeling that makes it very lovely. And Throne room is for me the second best. It's my second all-time favourite ending (after E.T). It sums up the spirit of the movie so well! I like these "polls" (this one wasn't actually a poll) cause many interesting points of view are mentioned, but I find it so diffcult to choose! And robthehand, your signature is the most hilarious thing i've heard in some time. IMDB forums are worthless!
  20. On the spanish national TV, there was a documentary about the failed coup d'etat that took place on February 23 1981. They used the JFK main theme, piano version.
  21. Great! I hadn't seen the nominations, and I can't understand how brits can allow so many american movies in their nods. I might see it from a country where even when they try to protect our own cinema against american movies people still prefer the latter, but I just can't see the point of considering american movies in the same categories as brit ones just because the original language is English.
  22. Wow perhaps I should take those violin lessons. I could finally read music It's about time I learned it. Same here
