Three discs for the greastest fans under the sky,
Seven for the completists who here endlessly moan,
Nine for late comers, doomed them from eBay to buy,
One for the Administator on his hundred disc throne,
In the land of JWFan where all the soundtracks lie.
One disc to rule them all,
    One disc to find them,
One disc to bring them all,
And in the dorkness bind them,
In the land of JWFan where all the soundtracks lie.

Quo Vadis was done early in Rozsa career and it still isn't the kind of boistrous sound he would employ in future movies. It's a much more intimate score, which makes it very unique. Especially with the addition of all the hymns and vocal pieces. A wonderful album to be sure and suite at the end is to die for.
And El Cid has one of the greatest love themes in cinema history in my opinion.

I order every release direct from them, usually don't get a shipping notice. But everything is always fine. When I ordered Lawrence of Arabia it didn't show up for month, so James sent a replacement ASAP.
Eventually I did get the first copy he mailed out as well, several months later.

And Rambo 3. That's what I've been saying for months.

A Goldsmith score that's not that great to his other output from 82/83 can still be a really good Goldsmith score.

    It's a first rate performance.

The series is NOT perfect. It has a hell of a lot of characters, many of them with independent story lines. The show tries to dutifully get through them all as best it can, but some feel drawn out, while others feel like they are only paid lip service. Some just aren't interesting for too long.

Best thing about the show is that most of the time the sudden plot twists don't seem like the show-runner had a sudden change of heart (Like Moffat on Dr. Who, or Ronald D. Moore on BSG). Or they just put in twists just for the sake of it.
Also not EVERYTHING is connected! I don't like TV shows or movies where the fates of everyone is deeply connected in some fashion. Makes it feel too..."written". Or artificial.
Dutch actress Carice van Houten became something of a hot property after Zwartboek/Black Book. But Hollywood didn't know what to do with her. Here she finally finds a role that shows that she is by far the most interesting Dutch actress working today.
A main problem is that this show is lacking more and more characters to root for. A problem that started at the end of season 1.
Good characters betray their morals or die, bad characters turn a bit less evil, but you don't quite trust them (Jaime).
This show, if taken too seriously could really make you suspicious about humanity.
The nudity. At times it's used for an effect, at times it's actually damn effective.
I'm not opposed to shows that show nudity during a love scene. Nothing seems more artificial to me then a women covering her breast with a blanket after a love scene.
The series does focus much more on female nudity then male though. occasionally we've seen a penis. I think twice or maybe three times a gay love scene. (though were much tamer then the straight ones btw).
The best use of nudity was in the last scene of season one. It simply would not have worked as well if she had risen from the ashes with a loin cloth.
The budget for season 3 was 50 million dollars. Which sounds like a lot, but they produced 10 hours of high quality, great looking TV for that! Why did The Lone Ranger cost 230 million????
Spielberg and Lucas may be right. Hollywood movies might crumble under their own weight.
It's a pity, because HBO seems to have the answer. Focus on characters, a gripping story, shoot it as best and beautiful as you can, and cherry pick your most expensive money shots.
Big budget Hollywood movies want to make every single shot look breathtaking and epic. You don't need that. GoT season three only has a few really brilliant epic special effect shots scattered throughout the season. A few minutes in total out of 10 hours of TV. But you remember those!

After far too long hesitation I ordered directly from Tadlow's site:

    and

I'll probably start collecting their other fantastic re-recordings in the coming months. Their work is both very important in providing old scores a breath of fresh air with the new performances but also making some of these classic scores available in their full form for the first time.

Thanks, Incanus. I'm going to bring my work on Williams into the academic fold and try to convince others that it's a rich and sophisticated repertoire for study.
I get the sense that Williams' popularity and the financial impetus of Hollywood has created suspicion in academic circles that this kind of music can't possibly be good for those reasons.
But I'm also sensing that the academic study of film music is becoming much more acceptable, especially with younger folk. Let's hope it catches on - we really need so much more work on this great music!

Well if the score itself is anything like those credits it sounds quite excellent. Somewhere between Goldsmith, Elfman and Navarrete I should say. I must indeed take a listen of the full album ASAP!

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn by John Williams
Angels in America by Thomas Newman: What a brilliant score, offering the whole spectrum of the best the composer has to offer in a 70 minute package. I just wish there was more of this, more variations on the main title theme etc.
Shawshank Redemption by Thomas Newman: Still one of the top Newman scores. Rather restrained affair yet has odd spell binding quality to it and as usual creates a singular mood, plus this score contains surprisingly strong thematic backbone with several motifs reprised at suitable intervals.

You look rather older and rounder than I imagined. The red stockings do not do justice to your form BB. Plus you should get that spasm in your middle finger checked. People might be accidentally offended by that.

I am extremely attached to Lee and Howe (and Nasmith, to a slightly lesser degree). I have their illustrated editions, as well -- although the nice slipcased versions of yore are WAAAAAAY outside my budget! Artwork from each of them hangs framed on my walls, for me to enjoy on a daily basis. But the reason I appreciate the Mosely (and Queen Margrethe) illustrations so much is precisely on account of their more stripped-down and stylized quality. They are more SUGGESTIVE, where Lee and Howe are more EXPLICIT, and I sometimes prefer that when reading. Fortunately, my bookshelf is big enough to accommodate both approaches!

If any label is going to print more copies it will be us - I have an agreement about that, which is how we did the Encore edition of Carrie - believe me others were nosing around that title just as I'm sure they'll be nosing around this, although, that said, I'm just not sure how many more sales there would be. If we'd done 1500 of them we wouldn't have sold a 1000 by this point - that's just how it goes, I'm afraid.
It's shipping Tuesday morning. We were hoping for today, but the holiday last week really slowed things up.
