The scores are fairly different in tone from the Goldsmith/Horner Trek scores, but of course so are the movies.  For me, these are excellent, memorable, melodic, accessible sci-fi action-adventure scores.  I'm not arguing that Giacchino is a master composer but his music is always those 4 adjectives and I always look forward to hearing his new stuff, even if it can be disappointing at times (like Zootopia).

I have absolutely zero problems with people not liking Giacchino's music; there are certainly lots of popular composers whose music I don't enjoy very much.

But I'll never understand the mentality behind popping into a thread about one of his scores over and over again to remind everyone that you're not looking forward to this score and don't like his other music either.

What a waste of everyone's time that accomplishes nothing positive!

    Just listened to this.
"Yorktown Theme", though underused in the film, is the best theme this year, or even these two past years. And it's not even a competition. That theme is simply sublime, and shows what an awesome theme writer Giacchino really is.

The studio behind the new God of War game has made the live performance from last year's announcement available for download as an mp3. Pretty cool.
Bear has 3 films appearing at Sundance this year. Colossal, Rebel in the Rye and the documentary Unrest. Unrest is the only one of these 'in competition'. Also on the horizon for this year are Animal Crackers and Revolt. Really exciting to see him finally diving into film scores in a big way. 10 Cloverfield Lane was one of my favourite scores from last year so I'm looking forward to seeing what he can come up with in these projects.

KittBash reacted to A24 in Before the internet, how did you find out which films were scored by John Williams?
Back in the days, while I was watching a movie, I always recognized the hand of John Williams. I would then wait until the end credits appeared to see if I was right, and voila, it was indeed John Williams. Today history is repeating itself with Alexandre Cre Desplat. Today when I watch a movie and I think "Hmmm, that sounds a bit like old school Williams. Could it be another score by Desplat?" Bam! It is Desplat! No Google necessary.

But its worth noting that "Jedha City Ambush" seems different between both versions (besides the length) This is explained below

And "Today of All Days" just cuts off mid-music at the end

No, I'm not joking. I just wonder if people have more of a problem with it based on its context in the film/subject matter rather than with the quality of the music itself. Fair enough if you dislike it, though. I don't think it's brilliant but I enjoy listening to it.

He really knows his Star Wars scores as well. Things like the great little Hoth battle reference at 0:30 in 'AT- ACT Assault.'

I know people will reply with things saying I'm an idiot for thinking it's great, but I care not. I am a fan of Giacchino, and I really like his style and this score.
