I nominate AI. The flim is choppy, borderline incoherent, and dumb (in the sense of thinking it has some grand message, but in fact does not--at least one that hadn't been done--and done better--by 50 sci-fi tv episodes prior). However, the score is superb, so much so that it really brings out the patheticness of the movie. Ohhhhh, Rouge City...give me a break. All of this IMHO, of course.

Obi-Wan director Deborah Chow on Williams' "magical" theme
Tom replied to BB-8's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
So, based on all these comments, evidently Obi-Wan flies like Leia in the series. -
Confession of stupidity: I never realized that the theme in the fourth movement of the concerto is the same as the first movement. Overall, I like this version better than the original (I have not carefully listened to the intervening versions over the years). The whole thing is true to Williams's voice and not readily associable to other composers.

Obi-Wan director Deborah Chow on Williams' "magical" theme

So, based on these snippets, there is one thing that puzzles me. Holt clearly began scoring, or at least had signed on, prior to JW's theme, and the theme itself then gave her the tentpoles for the project. Also, she has not met him--she was not there for the recording. Why not? Wouldn't you readily fly or whatnot to be part of that, both for its own sake, but also to be there for your own edification relative to scoring duties? Not trying to be difficult--just strikes me as odd and incongruous. -
Rian Johnson developing a fourth Star Wars trilogy... Oh my..

He would have subverted his own subvertedness, leading to an ernest movie about good heroes and bad villians. -
Attack of the Clones was released 20 years ago today
Tom replied to Edmilson's topic in General Discussion
The movie is ambitious but never achieves its aspirational goals. That being said, it has its moments. Before 2015, it was my least favorite SW movie--5 new movies later, it is nowhere near the bottom of my list. -
Mastro Williams, what's the deal with America, the Dream Goes On?

And don't forget the Spice Girls and New Kids on the Block.

Treesong, along with Heartwood for Cello, are top-tier medium-sized concerti. They both deserve more performances.

These vague comments (including Williams's own that the film is "very interesting") point toward something either dreadfully pointless or magically original. I doubt it will just be passible (e.g., The Post).

Unexpected random encounters with the music of John Williams
Tom replied to Fabulin's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
I didn't realize that he met his wife in high school--and she was a vocalist in his band. -
No, I am American. You should see the movie. Obviously, it works best if see it first when you are a kid, but it has charm in spades, Henry Thomas and Rachel Friend have a believable innocent/coming-of-age chemistry, and the plot is clever. It was free on Amazon a while back--not sure if it still is. Plus, if you are a Dr. Who fan, it has Katy Manning in it.

Videorecordings of John Williams' concert work performances
Tom replied to E-Wan's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
Oboe Concerto Edit: Wrong thread--just audio. -

If they could have told the story without the stupid robot (which made the film completely science fiction versus the hyperreality that I think they were going for), I could defend it. But, to each their own. One of my favorite childhood movies is Frog Dreaming, and I have never found another person who thinks its good.

It is a brilliant score for a bad film. I would put the movie in contention for JW's worst film post-Jaws (and, no, I am not forgetting Heartbeeps).

JW reflecting on JP: I watched the cut of Jurassic Park with Steven. I was so moved by the picture; I needed to take a walk and collect my thoughts. I met up with him and told him "you are going to need a better composer than me to score this." Steven looked at me sweetly and said, "I know, but they are all extinct."
