  1. I was there, meeting with an old friend. Great concert! The Luzerne concert hall, one of the best acoustics in the world, seemed virtually sold out. Some impressions: Sound from the movie was hollow and difficult to understand. It overshadowed some more subtle passages like the Basket game, unfortunately. Other times, when the brass was on full, the orchestra drowned out the movie sound, which was fine by me. This shows how much dynamic range is reduced in the mixing of the movie sound. I especially liked the fat tuba sound! after a while there was a small synchro glitch between movie picture and sound which was corrected after a while. no big deal. Ark theme e.g. in Map room was without choir which was imitated by synthesizer. Ditto for some exotic instruments like cymbalon. OK for me. There was an intermission when Indy starts digging at the Well of Souls. As exit music into the intermission the orchestra played a rendition of the Raiders march from the movie, don´t know exactly which. After intermission they first played Adventures of Mutt from Indy 4 without announcement, but it fitted nicely. Lead directly into part2 of the movie. On the whole the orchestra played almost perfectly, perhaps a very few notes not quite there, but impressive feat for a complex soundtrack like this. Seemed always in sync with the picture. The fantastic concert hall enhanced the music. I was sitting in the middle of the last row on the most upper balcony and heard perfectly. There was a whole Indiana Jones experience with dinner before the concert in an adjoining room, but very expensive. Did not participate that, the concert was enough for me. I came extra from Heidelberg to Luzern for this and no regrets!
  2. I always thought that they just switched the 2 LP sides resulting in Finale at the end of side1 and Main Title at the beginning of side 2.
  3. Vol 1 is a more pop/jazz/lounge music oriented album that does not have much to do with the actual score of the film except for the themes. I like Vol 2, the "real" soundtrack; there are a lot of orchestral cues, especially in the latter half. I detect also a lot of John in it, e.g. some passages remind me of 1941. Also, a lot of pastiche which I find entertaining.
  4. Of course. I made a suite of the orchestral tracks in chronological order which takes about 20 min; its one of my most often listened to selections. Overture More Theft Xerox Crisis Make me Rainbows, instrumental Juliets discovery Lefty Louis Love Life Gimbels Robbery End Titels It´s developing the two themes in a logical fashion and presenting the highlights of the score. Very entertaining.
  5. Jane Eyre Towering Inferno Heidi The Cowboys Fitzwilly Not with my Wife Eiger Sanction The Reivers Images How to steal a million
  6. Ture Rangstrom, 3rd symphony "Song under the stars". hynotic, mesmerizing, beautful.
  7. When my son was 3, he liked Hedwigs Theme. With 13 he loved playing Imperial March, Olympic Fanfare or The Duel Music from Tintin in the car. Now with 15 he is more into this Pop/Rock stuff – I hope a temporary regression of the teenage brain.
  8. I always get goosebumps at the first 30 sec of this Schindlers LIst Track. For me the most beautiful music of John Williams is 2:22 to 2:55 in this Always compilation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bmdIjSh4cA
  9. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1984
  10. Just ordered the Ticket for the 4.12.! Who else is coming? By the way, the KKL is an architectonic marvel and has one of the best acoustics in the World.
  11. Of course the headline was a minor shock, but in the end I think it is a good solution. I had no high expections for the score (lots of brooding underscore),while BFG seems to offer more options for a thematically rich, variied, romantic Williams score (and I prefer those). And I think Newman is not named general successor by this, but just the fitting replacement for this specific film. If JW would have to be replaced in BFG, he might have chosen someone else.
  12. mainly items in a series that damage it: Star Wars Prequels, Alien 3 and 4, Star Trek 5, 7 and 10 (I see the reboot as a new series) are the first that come to mind.
  13. Then why did you not vote for it in the poll? I disagree totally. I find Tintin one of the best Williams scores, showing of his incredible craftsmanship. His motivic work is intricate and inventive, total genius. Of course, not something that one hears with background listening. I personlly vote for option2: first the main recordings sessions, then the most important altenates from the second session to fill up the second disc. With detailed liner notes, of course. Lalaland, what are you waiting for?
  14. But what is the complete score in this case? Therefore my 3 options.
  15. After comparing the OST and the FYC of Tintin I asked myself, how a future expanded edition should look like. Tintin is a complicated case because of 2 recordings sessions and a lot of small edits and differences between alternates in those two recordings.
  16. Ellie in the power shed Well, hanser posted that he did just that, but didn't say what site he used EDIT: Found it It's a site called Pono Music Google is a wonderful thing EDIT 2: That sites a ripoff, they charge $2.50 per track, so $10 to get all 4 new tracks. You can buy the entire album in 96/24 lossless for $18 on HDTracks! http://www.hdtracks.com/jurassic-park-20th-anniversary?format=FLAC I did mention Pono Music, if you read my post. And it is still cheaper if you are only interested in the 4 new tracks (but in lossless quality). Qobuz is not cheaper and most sites do not allow single track buy. Anyway, I am happy that my post has somehow revived this thread.
  17. OK, reviving this thread for 2 things: First, I finally listened to the extended version with the untouched tracks in chronological order (see Post #31) and find it a much better listening experience than the OST. This way the first half is very entertaining with much variety and a lot of intersting thematical material, among others due to Stalling around. In contrast, the first half of the OST was very repetitive with the main Theme over and over due to "Theme from JP" and the early appearance of the end titles in "Welcom toJP". This was a major reason I never really warmed to this soundtrack. Now, I find it a masterpiece comparable to Raiders and Jaws. Second, I just found one place where one can buy the 4 new tracks separately in high resolution: the new pono music portal.
  18. Finally listened to the whole score, it is great! I was surprised how much the music seems modelled after ET and Indiana Jones. E.G. like ET the main themes are related or derived from each other and there is a shorter, more mysterious motiv that opens the film/credits. The actions music reminds of Indiana Jones. Fun Question: If you did not know about this score and somebody would present it to you as a long lost Williams score from that time, would you believe it?
  19. Empire Strikes Back in a a theatrical Sunday matinee 1983; I was 15. Some school mates dragged me into it kicking and screeming that I would never watch such a low brow entertainment. After 10 min I was absorbed. And I stayed the whole end credits because I was floored by the music and wanted to hear more. I was already a huge classical music fan and had never imagined that movie music could be that good. After that I started hunting the LPs, which was not easy at the time in Germany. Then came Star Wars at another matinee and Temple of Doom in 1984. After those 3 I was a Williams fan for life.
  20. YES! This is the chance to buy Young Sherlock Holmes, I was waiting for.
  21. One should mention BIS here, an exceptional recording Company that is producing a Lot of high quality classical Studio recordings, of familiar and unusual Repertoire. The new ones are all hirez SACDs and Downloads. They Even have Great recordings of Williams, the Tuba concerto and the Saxophone pieces of catch me if you can, which I bought for a few bucks on eclassical.com.
  22. Nope I didn't mean connection between those three themes (there isn't much of that I agree) but rather the musical ideas presented in Gloria that are developed in those cues I mentioned. I think that's the main weakness of this score. There's just 3 thematic ideas with their own variation. None of them interact in anyway, so there is a bit of a disconnect between the ideas of the score. It's Williams quickly wrote out 3 major ideas, and just varied them through out the score. Then A.I., JFK and Empire of the Sun are also lesser scores? They are quite disparate too.
  23. While one can debate the perceptible sound differences between SACD and CD, it is undeniable that SACD, like DVD-Audio and Blu-ray Audio, offers with its discreet multichannel sound an additional option which many value highly, me included.
