There are two types of people in this world: those who say, "I had it rough - why should the next generation have it any easier?" and those who say, "I had it rough - why should the next generation have to struggle like I did?" (Actually, there are a lot of other types of people, but what the hell.)

For myself, getting expansions over the decades has been a delight, and part of the fun of being a soundtrack fan.  The delayed gratification made me appreciate both album arrangements and the newly released material when it came out.  I wouldn't change that for the world, because when there's a cue you want, but don't have, it shapes your estimation of all of it, for better or worse.  A new fan who gets everything all in one shot is denied the thrill of the yearning and the satisfaction of the new release.  I'd imagine someone whose first exposure to these scores is the complete score will regard little incidental cues very differently than those of us who hungered for them for decades.

A weird psychology, I know, but I enjoyed growing up in the OST era, and now living through the expansion era.

    Indeed! Well said.

Not at all. We all crave and appreciate something that we can't have, or are in danger of losing, more. I guess that's just human nature. And I guess that's where the psychology of "limited edition" ties in too...

I wish they were unlimited so that John's popularity would skyrocket because they'd be available in brick and mortar stores, as they should be.

You'd also see them go on sale occasionally.

This question was a lot tougher for me.

On the one hand, of course I want every fan who wants to get the scores they want to have the ability to go and get those scores and enjoy them to the fullest like so many of us have been fortunate enough to do.  This keeps the music alive, preserved and keeps these labels who have dedicated their working lives to these things in business and doing the work that we have enjoyed the fruits of so far.

On the other hand, I started collecting this stuff when I was 14 (now about to turn 39) that is a lot of time saving and scrounging and collecting. Of course I still want people to have access but I can't lie there's a certain feeling I get when I look at the cd shelves in my office and think... You know I'm probably one of only 5000 to 10000 people on the planet with this kind of collection. Picking up these beautiful packages of music and knowing I can't just go to Walmart or Amazon to get them... there's something to that... I know that the days of the CD are numbered and these physical releases are probably only going to last so long but for now I'm enjoying the heck out of the music and the game of collecting.

After all is said and done, I think the idea of limited physical releases and unlimited digital releases that has been mentioned here is a good idea (assuming the business side of things would ever work out!) It allows both camps to co-exist and in the end it's about getting the people who love this music a chance to hear it and feel like part of this family. So if I have to lose part of that pride when something in the Varese club comes out digital that I've treasured as physical for so long that others get to share in it... so be it and we're better for it.

[Edit: and I just noticed it only took me almost 20 years to hit 500 posts.... that's pathetic lol ]

This was one of (if not definitively) my most wanted expanded/remastered scores!!! We basically had nothing except the OST, which I love. So thrilled to get it. Listening to it now... the remastered OST is excellent -- hearing stuff I never noticed before, and the film score is a welcome full CD length! Been waiting to crack open the recent Blu-Ray of it after I become more familiar with the film score (very familiar with the album). Absolutely LOVE it!
What the?! That's not for real, is it?! Fooled me for a sec! Hade me scrambling to Target's site,
Yeah, it's been a goal of mine since the 1990s to have every CD release of all of Williams' scores. And I don't sell the OSTs when a new expanded/remaster comes out, either.  I used to get even re-pressings with different covers and such, but I had to draw a line somewhere for my sanity's sake.

The hardest ones to get for me were the 'Yes, Giorgio' OST and the original pressing of the 'SpaceCamp' CD (before Stefancos turned to evil, he helped me find that one!). It kind of stuns me when I hear 'Goodbye Mr. Chips' is so hard to get, now?

I just realized that there's many more OUT OF PRINT / SOLD OUT titles in the master list here, than there are available titles (and even most of the ones that aren't OOP, or temporarily out of stock)

New Williams fans just discovering the guy's music have no legal way to listen to a lot of his scores in complete form right now.

I was stricken with a bug since late Wednesday evening so I apologise for sounding groggy during most of the show. I’d prerecorded Neil and Deniz on Monday so I was more myself then, thankfully. Deniz messaged me to say that Sara Horner (James Horner’s widow) listened to the full show live last night and enjoyed it, highlighting The Wonder Years segment with Star Trek 2, so that was lovely to hear.

Here’s a link to the full show and a longer edit of the Star Trek 2 segment will be in next month’s FSM Online.

It means that the AFM aren’t charging more reuse fees for larger units. 5,000 used to be the max affordable limit.

Tim just said it is limited to 10,000 copies due to "new Union rules".  What new union rules?  Does this impact post-2005 scores by any chance?

MM has certainly made it clear he plans to produce a comprehensive album for every film score JW ever wrote. I think sometimes people get too held up on anniversaries being an indication that that's when things will release. Even if a project was initially intended to hit one of those, so many titles miss their targets these days due to do many factors, even before covid altered the work flow of every studio and label. In recent months we learned Always was planned for its 30th Anniversary and only came out on its 32nd Anniversary, X-Men was planned for its 20th Anniversary and came out on its 21st Anniversary.... heck, we even just got a definitive Wrath Of Khan now, on its 39th Anniversary! (they chose not to wait 5 short months to make it a "40th Anniversary" branded release)

I have faith we'll get a MM Hook eventually, just like I have faith we'll get MM Star Warses and Indiana Joneseses. And what a surprise all these announcements will be, whenever they happen
