This release is gonna be great, but wow, that cover art does the movie, the score, and my girls dirty.  VS really needs to hire a better art department (assuming they have one; maybe this was just a desk jockey whose "real passion is graphic design."

    Holst - The Planets (1987)

I liked this a lot!  You can clearly hear the influence this music has had on film music, especially in Mars.  This is easily the classic music I've listened to that most reminds me of and gives me the same feelings as listening to film music.  The orchestration throughout is an interesting as the melodies too.  I've listened to this album a few times now and will be returning to it again.  Good stuff!

The liner notes for this one are on the short side - a two-page note from a "Robin Golding" - who explains, among other things, that there are only 7 movements because Holst did not count Earth, and "the remaining planet, Pluto" was not discovered yet   One interesting note in the booklet says "In this performance a synthesiser has occasionally been used, notably to augment the organ and the chorus" [yes, that's how they spelled synthesizer].  What's that all about?

I even like the simple cover art. Cool album.

But it's been 8 albums in a row now without any film music (other than Swing Swing Swing) on them - time to go back to your roots Johnny!

Hopefully this means we'll at least get some new arrangements of Shore's glorious Rohan theme.

Hopefully it does not mean a Grima/Alfrid family origin story.

A Goldsmith noir that no one has ever actually heard before?  Yes PLEASE.

I was always fascinated with this movie as a kid and I'm not sure I even WATCHED it.  I just dug the aesthetics.

Ugh, please just give us this one already!  It's just an absolute banger of a score, tonally-mismatched gargoyle song aside.  I also just really wanna see whatever cover art they come up with, because they're always bloody gorgeous.

I received my copy a few days ago, and I am quite happy with the set. The best part being all the unaltered versions of cues that were significantly changed in the film. It gives a better idea for what Kamen wanted out of the score, as well as further cementing some of the ideas that would've been lost in the edits. Can't say it's the significantly different experience I was expecting, but I can say that it helps me understand just how much of it truly was the vision MK had in mind.

As for whether or not I think KB had any significant involvement in the post production work of the score: based on the only real evidence at hand (the previously mentioned website promo), I'm going to say no. A lot of the elements that are on prominent display there is, well, the electronic percussion. There's nothing to really suggest that he had any particular input on some of the more out there editing choices, especially with the cues that are included. Plus, given the fact there are MIDI synth parts that would be replaced with a live orchestra in the final score, I'm further inclined to believe that he was personally brought on by Kamen early on. It's just hard to say for sure without a contemporary comment by Badelt himself, but I think this is the best guess we'll get for the time being. He simply did the job we was assigned to do.

Also, love the alternate artwork on the back of the booklet. Is that present on other LLL sets?

LongTallJodie reacted to Jay in The most recent John Williams Star Wars expansions was over 2 decades ago...
Sony Music having the exclusive rights to release music from the first 6 films from 1999 through 2016 surely is the primary reason we didn't get Star Wars expansions in that window other than the 2000 TPM UE; The bigwigs running that company just don't get it

Disney Records owning the rights from 2017-> present seems more hopeful, especially on the Star Wars front, since Kathleen Kennedy has been supporting of expanded Williams albums in the past.  And Disney Records has already shown a willingness to spend money on hiring Shawn Murphy to oversee rebuilds of the original 6 OST albums and promote them with a lot of marketing.  Granted that isn't what we want either but its a step in the right direction.

I really think proper expansions overseen by Mike will happen eventually.  I just don't have a clue when

Guess which is which in the comparisons below. Trust me, it won't be hard

Hideous bloom/green filter removed, doesn't look like a video game now:

    Green tint gone:

Green tint gone, warmer earthy skin tones:

CGI foliage has been drastically toned back in this shot:

Green tint gone again. Side note: the lighting of this shot is student-film amateurish, seriously Kaminski? You don't need smoke machines for every shot.

Huge improvement here, as if an erroneous green tinted lens was removed from the camera:

It's amazing how that teal/green tint and mild bleach bypass/bloom pervades the entire film, not just the Peru sections. It's drastically less stylised now; it looks more earthy now with warmer skin tones that match the palette of Slocombe's work:

Skin tones are a huge improvement in the 4K, Blanchett looks far less sickly now and has a warm glow:

Wall lighting no longer blown out, bloom heavily reduced, teal/orange tint removed:

There's actually blue sky in this shot now! And the lighting just looks like morning sun instead of a giant lighting rig creating a silhouette. Also note how that weird artificial bloom has been toned back, top-right around the windshields:

I like how the new grade draws less attention to the lighting. It's as if Kaminski was drawing attention to all his lights in the older grade, and it did the film no favours (especially paired with that garish green tint). Slocombe shot the original trilogy in a stylised but grounded, naturalistic way; Temple of Doom is a perfect example of that fine balance. Kaminski just seems incapable of matching that style; he can't help but push his fantastical, dream-like photography.

I ordered Looney Tunes and Along Came A Spider at the same time, so I gotta wait for all 3

Surely 7 more Goldsmiths will be announced by then!
