I'm not expecting DVDs to vanish completely any time soon.

What's your point?

Yes, DVDs aren't going anywhere.

DVDs came in in 1997, and in 2003 stores around here still stocked a good supply of VHS.

And I think the DVD -> HD-DVD upgrade will be far less popular than the VHS -> DVD one, so they may be around for even longer than that.

Since you cannot see the difference between DVD and HD-DVD quality on a regular TV or cheap LCD TV and since both DVD's and DVD player are dirt cheap, I doubt there is a mass appeal for these new formats.

Blu-Ray may be the new Laserdisc.

Stefan, i hope Lucas releases someday a version of the movie that pleases all.

Though, i think i wont change my mind on what version fo the movies i want to see in high quality. Call me stupid (but hey i'm acknowlegding (sp?) it so you cant :P)

and BTW, i wouldn't give Neil that pleasure

My head hurts.

I think you're getting formats confused with what we want. If Blue-Ray and HD-DVDs catch on I'm pretty sure you will see Lucas issue the SW films on that format.

I don't think any of us care if he wants to release them in the different DVD formats. I don't think regular DVDs are going anywhere soon and I don't plan on switching formats in the near future. What we want is the original trilogy, as they originally appeared and sounded in 1977, 1980 & 1983 with the same care and effort to remaster and restore the films as other movies have, without adding CGI effects, un-necessary sound effects, altering the soundtrack, cutting snippets of film etc etc etc.

I agree with what Mark said that a lot of us don't care if they are released on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Hell Lucasfilm even told us they are not going to release any of the Star Wars movies on either format right now because they're both new and plus the is that war between them going on. I think those who do want either format are the ones from the Original Trilogy forum... while it would be nice to have them on either format but as I said and Lucasfilm said the formats are just too new and there's the war going on between them.

Honestly this discussion doesn't have anything to do with wanting them released on either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. A lot of us just want the theatrical cuts of the Original Star Wars Trilogy given a proper digital restoration and released on regular DVD. This is not to much to ask for but apparently according to George Lucas it is and that is what frustrates a lot of people. I too honestly don't understand why it's so hard to grasp that.

Did I really just quote that?

All though I will say I'm honestly surprised you haven't said any more about my "change of heart" regarding this issue, Neil.

Well no one could remain that blissfully ignorant for too long, though Luke seems to be trying.

Lucas needs a group of reps that can make the point very clear:

Release each Star Wars movie with a cleaned up Theatrical release and the latest "Creator's Cut" that includes deleted scenes, and new scenes (either as extras or possibly the ability to choose which version they want to see - with new and deleted scenes or just plain original version).

Then everybody is happy, and Lucas is again a hero. Maybe that's his plan? Be Anakin himself? Make everybody hate him via his dark deeds, then save the day and be forgiven.

Im happy to see you dont want these in the next new available format. wich was the thing i wanted to read cleary here.

I dont think it would be good for our healths to argue the same amount of years as we are doing with the DVDs.

Luke, blissfully ignorant. Though i dont have to ONLY like the OT 'as it was' to know that the 2006 re-release is not perfect and has many fails. But since i would only see these movies as historical value (to see how there were) i dont need crispy quality, (and BTW isnt this quality 'vintage' as the movies are?...) the only thing that should have been done correctly is the anamorphic widescreen since eventually all TV will be panomaric.

Anamorphic widescreen!

Cleaned up picture (which means removing dirt and residu from the films, not changing the whole colorscheme around)

A vintage soundtrack (preferably the stereo one, remixed/remastered but without anything added or removed)

That's really al I need.

Do you really not get this?

And for the second part, marc:

I know what you all want, im just telling that i dont need them.

A perfect release for me, would be a completelly tweaked version.

What i mean BTW with 2006 release is the Original version release. (though i dont 'like' the SE version since it is still uncomplete..)

I want to see the saga as a whole, and for me, the Original versions detract form it. I dont need a perfect version (though as i said anamorphic SHOULD have been done) since i'm not going to see it more than once per year more or less.

Ah. But you see, my point was that I personally don't care either way, because at the moment, I'm not capable of playing those formats anyway.

I thought what you meant by "you don't want them released" was that we would be upset if these movies move to the next generation format. That's not the case. I'm sure many people would be quite happy to own these movies in high-defenition. It's just that if it were released tomorrow, I wouldn't be banging on the door to buy it, since I can't play those anyway.

Well, let's not sling mud here.

But I still find it odd that people just take a less-than-perfect transfer for granted.

Sure, the LaserDisc bootlegs I have are far from perfect as well, but at least LucasFilm isn't making any more money off them. Striving for quality, my ass.

Anybody know if Lucas is going to release anything in HD-DVD or Blu-Ray soon? Or will he wait until the format is nearly dead before he does 5 similar "SE" releases and saving the theatrical versions release until the NEXT generation of home video takes over?

Like I said... give me 2 disc sets with new, old, and never before seen versions and I'm happy.

Anakin was only forgiven by his dimbwitted son,

He must have inherited his daddy's stupid genes!

Looks like old Obi-Wan, Yoda, and whatever is "the light side of the force" forgave him too.

you make it sound like forgivness is (pardon the pun) alien...to you...

If you are one with the force, there's no reason for any of those human emotions that would hold you back from forgiving... so it's not a big leap...

Ah damn. I was talking to Luke, but for some reason I thought he had quoted me, since I agree entirely with you anyway.

I think they just said that to see how fast people would go to get a copy of it. After the initial response I think they will keep it out longer than they intended, so I say they will pull off the shelves in December of 2008.

You're speaking to Stefan, right? Stefan made the comment that Luke was stupid for forgiving his father, and I said it looked like everybody else did too. I thought that Vader, taking out the unforgivably-evil Palpatine, earned at least some degree of forgiveness, and many RotJ-bashers disagree with me here.

Myself, I'm big on warranted forgiveness, but against unwarranted forgiveness.

I knew you had potential, lad!
