The ending of WOTW is terrible and makes an already mediocre-at-best film instantly a TERRIBLE film I haven't bothered to watch again since the theater.

I think that's pretty harsh. For me, everything up to and including the part where Robbie leaves is right up there with the best of Spielberg's work. His take on the post-9/11 world is leagues better than the 2012 crap that's been coming out since then. Very atmospheric, intense, slow-burning stuff, and I like the character work too, particularly the sandwich scene. Williams' score is great too, the droning motif over the shot behind the trees of the tripod first starting to rise up is one of the scariest things I've experienced on film in the last six years.

It does start to become less interesting from there, once Tim Robbins enters the picture, and by the end, I agree that the movie as a whole doesn't work as well as it could have. But the first 80 minutes or so are definitely not mediocre-at-best.

There is nothing wrong with WOTW's ending.

The whole family being reunited, including the son who had ran off halfway through the picture, only to show up at the exact same time tom cruise and dakota reach the ex-wifes house, was laughably bad

That, and the fact that the movie has no finale and the most "WTF-- That was it??"-ending possible. And don't give me crap like "that is how it was in the book" or something, because a succesful movie is carried by different laws. Peter Jackson knew that when he was making LOTR.

Terry Gilliam was totally right about this film and ... Wait a minute... Didn't I type this shit only a few months ago...? Deja vu anyone..?

KotCS seems like the movie that everybody hates until they see it

I liked the movie until I saw it.

I wanted to respond with a long, intelligent post, but suddenly remembered you added Klaus Badelt as a Facebook friend....

Not worth it.

Yeah, if I need a "long, intelligent post" to convince me that the WOTW finale is actually something ingenious or something like that, than I guess I have nothing more to add either. And uh, Klaus invited ME. ;)

Uh oh Roald! Badelt added you! Prepare for abduction and brainswashing. You'll be back here in a week babbling incoherently about the greatness of Hans Zimmer clone factory and their music.

Oh and the WotW ending is extremely disappointing in its sugar coated sentimentality. When the boy suddenly returns after having disappeared in the fire storm and the family is reunited was just too much for me. I can even swallow the "bacteria killed the aliens, the smallest organisms defeated the invader when Man was unable to do it with all his technological know-how" ending much better than the cuddly family reunion. But it is true that the film just suddenly ends as the poetic ending of the author clashes with the rest of the movie as it provides a deus ex machina that is extremely unsatisfying.

Nah, for me it's the opposite. I think Leonard Maltin said it best: "... It ends with a whimper, not a bang, muting the entire experience". Exactly how I felt about the movie.

That's even worse.

I'm afraid you are going to have to terminate your membership here!

Sorry...

Wow, you actually bought that...? You're more gullible than I thought... ;)

I'm sorry Joe, once again you are fatally wrong!

Jeremy Brett IS Sherlock Holmes

yes he (Brett) makes a second best Sherlock Holmes.

Perhaps even a third best behind Peter Cushing.

The end justifies the means....NOT! Instead of re-watching mediocre Spielberg movies, just watch some good ones for a change.

I want some Tintin news, not random rants about KOtCS and other unrelated movies

Don't you think we would post something Tintin related if there was something to post? Damn you Spielberg for being so quiet!

Your credibility is receding with every word here, Joseph...

you just need to understand that I'm correct. All three are terrific btw. It's a win win win situation. But I prefer SH in B&W.

when does Tintin come out in Europe?

This might gives us some indication how sucessfull this movie can be:

"The Smurfs passes $500 million worldwide"

http://www.deadline....lion-worldwide/

Wow. I did not see that coming.

Let's hope Tintin is as succesful or more.

TV spot on the official German Tintin Facebook page. More footage of the ships, some oriental palace, Tintin driving a convertible and motorbike...

Great catch! Cool stuff. Finally something is happening. But still no Tintin theme.

...also on youtube:

Wow! Thanks so much for posting - looks GREAT!

WHY, GOD, WHY DID THEY HAD TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS AT 0:26? TINTIN IS NOT G.I. JOE!

Hahahahahaha..... its 2011, I expect crazy shenanigans like that to be in any action movie. I'm sure it'll be fine

This is taking Nuke The Fridge to another level!

Nah even Harrison Ford would have hard time replicating that stunt we just saw in that 30 second commercial. Besides he only had to come out of a charred refrigerator. ;) Nuke the fridge was infinitely more absurd than animation character doing such a stunt Tintin performs there. All in good fun I am sure. Unless you have some kind of illusion that this is going to be 100% serious and realistic adventure film where the characters don't do, to quote John Williams, any "gravity defying stunts". The trick is not to go overboard with them even if it is an animation.

I'm not asking this film to be 100% serious and realistic adventure. I'm just asking for this film not to be stupid and be at least faithful to Tintin's character. But from what I'm seeing, it's not the case. Such a stunt belongs to some mindless action film like Fast And Furious 18: Time to Retire, or The Transporter 34: Under The Sign Of The Cobra, not Tintin. What's next? Haddock saying to the bad guy: "Blistering Barnacles! This is one ugly motherfucker! Let's rip his balls out! Yippee kay aye, Ivanovitch!" ?

Fair point my friend. But surely you should see the context before flying into indignant rage. Making hasty judgements is more my department.

There is no context in the world which could justify Tintin doing such a stunt.

But who am I saying this to anyway? A guy who couldn't care less about Tintin, and who prefers Petri Hiltunen to Hergé!

At least Hiltunen's characters have some character!

And it is true that I am not a die hard Tintin fan. I might have vastly different expectations than those who know him from all the comics. Thusfar I have read only the three that the film is based on. Not that he does so great stunts in there but it is not unexpected that he does them in the film as he is obviously portrayed as a quite an active and adventurous character. But to each his own. You can surely dislike that stunt from your heart's content.

I love MIlou in all the pictures I've seen. I hope they make a plush figure out of him like the ones Spielberg and Jackson were holding in that press conference

Yes! Milou looks great and they succeeded in bringing him to life with lively character and persona.

Paramount bumped up the U.S. release of Tintin to December 21st, which means it'll be opening against Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Paramount's own Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Talk about cornering the market.
