What Is The Last Film You Watched? (Older Films)

The other night I watched Saló or the 120 Days of Sodom.

Exactly what I expect from Euro trash cinema. I'm not sure why this was banned in Australia for so many years. The nudity is typical of how Europeans normally dress, human poo is a culturally significant Italian dish, those whopping big dicks looked like bad prosthetics, the dialogue was comical.

Had this been edited differently, it could have passed for an uncensored Monty Python flick.

I give Saló two thumbs up and recommend it to everyone.

Perfectly ok. But then why film at a big opera festival to begin with, if you don't make use of the location?

I think they used the parallel with Tosca quite nicely. Although it might be a little presumptuous to think the average James Bond viewer knows how the plot of Tosca parallels with that of James Bond.

I think the Palio was much more wasted in QoS than Bregenz was. The fact that the Palio was going on had no effect on the chase whatsoever and vice versa.

My Best Friend’s Wedding

OK, I didn't really watch this - Marcy did, but I was around enough I caught most of it. What a stupid movie! At least Julia Roberts didn't end up with the guy, that would have been a terrible ending. I've never seen a movie where you root against the supposed protagonist so much! She was an awful character! Who greenlit this movie?

Wedding Crashers

Good cast, some funny parts, but not enough. Didn't like the complete turnaround of Vaugn and how he feels about Isla Fisher, it was completely random. I know you're not supposed to scrutinize dumb comedies, but there really isn't a lot to talk about here. Don't get why its held up on such a high pedestal - it's not that great.

I like basically all the actors in this movie, in other things.... this one doesn't showcase any of their talents properly.

Quantum of Solace

Somewhere in this rushed mess of a movie, there could have been something interesting. The film's main problem is that it sets up a cool premisse in the first fifteen minutes (we pick up right where we left Casino Royale and Bond is about to start digging, investigating Mr. White and the people behind Vesper), only to demote that to the film's subplot once Olga Kurylenko and Mathie Amalric enter the story. The opera scene is really cool, but other than that, it's a wasted film.

Check out this hilarious post-mortem.

Mad Max

Before this summer I had never seen a moment of any Mad Max film at all; I loved Mad Max 4 so figured I should check out the series at some point. Icelandair has a great great in-flight entertainment setup, so after SPY, I decided to check out the original, first Mad Max (the guy next to me watched Mad Max 4, which is probably what inspired me).

Well, I thought it was awful! Full disclosure: I fell asleep twice, so can't say I truly saw the entire thing, but what I did see was boring, not compelling, and so low budget that you just can't take it seriously. It was also the dubbed american dialect version (which was really distracting), and I think it was pan&scan too (which was odd, since everything else on the Icelandair setup seemed OAR).

What's really odd is that I thought this was a film series entirely set in a post-apocalyptic future, I had no idea this first one wasn't.... It was just like, a normal town, with diners and businesses and everything else. When does the apocalypse happen?

Eh, no matter, I found nothing to like whatsoever about this film. I'll probably see the second one anyway sometime, I suppose.

The first is just dystopic. Society is crumbling but there's still law, the MFP. It sets up the idea of Max going from family man to a lone wanderer.

The series play it loose with continuity in sequels.

Don't worry, Mad Max 1 wasn't popular in the US.

Funny I just saw the The Road Warrior today for the second time. I got the trilogy sometime before Fury Road came out. Yeah the first one really is a bizarre film. Its tone is all over the place, the score is atrocious and clearly written for another type of movie, and the events don't follow a logical sense. Despite its awkwardness, Mel is badass, and the second half of the film does redeem the uneven first half, but not by much.

Do check out the second, it's a big improvement. And I also like Beyond Thunderdome a lot.

The first one kinda is as well, but within the restraints of a much tighter budget. It does open with a title card that says "A few years from now..."

Apparently, the apocalypse is supposed be have happened a few years after the first film, before The Road Warrior.

Continuity is a fickle thing in the series anyway. Like with Bruce Spence basically playing the same character in the second and third film, only that he apparently isn't the same.

The first film is very low budget, very slow, and very 70s. It's not entirely uninteresting though, and at times quite gripping.

Road Warrior and Thunderdome have some really cool cinematography.

After recently rewatching the series (and seeing the third one for the first time), Fury Road has a strong chance of being the best I think. Will see how it holds up after a second viewing.

It IS the best one. Followed by The Road Warrior.

Ghostbusters

Still fucking amazing. I can watch this for how well it's made and how steadily Reitman directs his perfect cast to the perfect finale, or I can watch this just for laughs and still be entertained after what by now must be at least twenty viewings. One of my favorite films of all time.

The Impossible:

Did anyone see this movie? I can't tell you how much it reminded me of Empire Of The Sun. Some of it is very impressive, but sadly, it gets a bit too melodramatic as the movie nears the end. Despite of that, it's hard to punish the movie for that. 7/10

Look! It even has a boy and a swimming pool.

The tsunami movie? I quite enjoyed it. The devastation scenes are very well done, especially the amazing under water carnage shots with Naomi Watts. I didn't mind it being a bit manipulative towards the end, since it was a genuinely moving event for that family.
