Nope. we can confirm that Hayao Miyazaki’s animation How Do You Live? will not be heading to the Croisette. There had been hope the filmmaker’s first movie in a decade could grace the festival and conversations were had about that possibility but as first reported by Paris Match over the weekend, our sources have confirmed it will debut to Japanese audiences in July. https://deadline.com/2023/03/cannes-lineup-studio-ghibli-anime-miyazaki-wim-wenders-ainouz-kitty-green-1235277889/ filmmusic

Popular Post mrbellamy 6,338
Found this post on Reddit: I live in Japan and just got out of a 10 AM showing. I really loved it. I think it’s definitely a bit more thematically vague than some of his other films. You’ll likely leave with a lot of questions, but I do think it’s a film worthy of Miyazaki’s filmography. It’s a film only Miyazaki can make. Accept no imitations. I do want to see it again before I give it some arbitrary ranking in the Ghibli hierarchy. If you want to know the premise, here it is. No major spoilers, but I don’t know how to use the spoiler tag on Reddit mobile so TURN BACK IF YOU WANT TO KNOW NOTHING. —————————————————————————- Spoiler The film opens during the firebombing of Tokyo during World War II. The protagonist is a young boy (around 13 years old) named Mahito. His mother dies during the firebombing and at the end of the war his father moves away from Tokyo to the countryside estate of his new wife, Natsuko. Mahito struggles with creating a relationship with Natsuko and adapting to his new life. During all this, he’s harassed by a talking heron who says his mother is alive and lure him to an abandoned library on the estate’s grounds. Natsuko goes missing and Mahito eventually pursues the heron which Leads Mahito into an abstract and surreal fantasy world. ————————————————————————— Overall, seeing Miyazaki’s possible final film without seeing a single image, surrounded by people who know as little as you do, was really an incredible experience. filmmusic, Muad'Dib and MaxMovieMan
filmmusic 1,896
Hmmmm.. Vague thematics? I'm not a fan of vagueness and questions, but since it's Miyazaki, I'll buy it of course.. Now, bring on a trailer please!!!!
mrbellamy 6,338
Update: The film will now officially be known in English as The Boy and the Heron GKids gets the North American distribution rights, of course. Will release "later this year." Rumors of a festival run so maybe Suzuki's comments were specifically referring to withholding all the usual pre-release stuff for the Japanese release while international could be a different ballgame for them. Naïve Old Fart 9,717
I've noticed that The Mouse uses a story broaden the art of animation, while Studio Ghibli uses animation to tell a story. The Wind Rises is unlike any other animated movie ever made i would posit. It is basically a sweeping biographical historical period piece drama. You could make the same movie word for word, moment for moment in live action and it would be one of those classic epic Hollywood oscar best picture winners.
