1985 - A wonderful year in film music!

Just as I was thinking about starting this thread the other day, I saw Varèse's announcement of their special release and concert Back in Time... 1985 At The Movies (the concert takes place tonight in Los Angeles), which seemed to me a natural celebration, being 1985 my favorite year in film music :)

Having been a film score fan since the early 70s, and thus practically breathing scores during the glorious 75/84 decade (during which my John Williams fandom became an obsession along with my appreciation for all the classic and contemporary greats), it didn't come as a surprise that the culmination of the wonderful first half of the '80s ended up being such a delicious film music feast.

During that year, new films with good to great to wonderful scores were being released nearly on a weekly basis (If you were a film score fan back then you know exactly what I’m talking about! :)). Some of those gems did not receive a proper edition until many years later, but the dozens that did get, at least, a 40-minute LP release, along with the cinema screenings (and the cassette recordings I used to make during the projections) were enough for me to realize that I was experiencing a unique 12-month period, a perception that was confirmed the following years.

5 brilliant Goldsmiths, 4 great Jarres, 3 Barrys including that year's Academy Award winner, 2 Bernsteins, 2 Mancinis, 2 Horners, Broughton and Silvestri's first big scores, Elfman's first Burton, Kamen's first masterpiece... Just take a look at the list below and judge for yourself.

The Goonies and Back To The Future are my favorite scores from 1985. Was SO THRILLED then their Varese and Intrada versions came out.

The Mission by Williams is amazing too, something I never discovered until the Intrada set.

I dunno why, but I just can't get into Jerry's The Explorers. Some nice moments, but something about it is always "off" to me.

I find both The Goonies and BTTF rather dissapointing. But 85 has many fine scores

What the fuck is this shit? Two of the best scores ever! To each his own I guess

It's not a standout year for me either, but the list still makes film music today look like an extinction event.

In 2035, people will likely be saying the same thing about 2015. Those of us who like scores from the 1980s will get maybe 2 expanded releases per year

Try to come up with your own insults next time you miserable shitbrained cumstain.

Your little "angry at the world because I'm getting old" act is really adorable though. I'm touched you've chosen me to focus your frustrations on lately.

Guys, enough with the language and personal attacks. Knock it off!

Let's talk about the music of 1985 in this thread, ok?

Heh, yeah yeah whatever say ;)

I could feel the vitriol emminatng from my phone's screen. I bathed in it.

Nah, just drawing attention to the fact that "cock juggling thundercunt" wasn't a Quintus original, lest anyone give you undue credit.

The second part was serious, though. You bathed in my vitriol? I positively sustain myself on your continuing misery and disappointment, and the aplomb with which you deny it! Makes it all the sweeter.

1985 did have Explorers though, which is far superior to a certain Williams score on a similar subject. In the former, you have genuine wonderment and fun. The latter is just nostalgia-masturbation designed to give the listener a sort of musical diabetes which can only be cured by constant listening. Symptoms include grumpiness about the present and sickly longing for the past, as well as general wallowing of a sort that would make a pig feel shame.

But then, it was for an 80s Spielberg family film, so what do you expect? Rip open my veins and pour in the sugar, Steveo. We know it's all you can do, it's ok.

I bought the Intrada CD and put it on and just.. couldn't get into it. I was surprised because I was sure I was going to love it. I'll revisit it again some day.

This year had a good couple of gems. My favourites being Agnes of God, Ran, Revolution and Cocoon.

Legend is my favourite Goldsmith's score. But Poledouris' Flesh + Blood is a stunning work.

The score is alright. But I get tired of all the modal writing. Poledouris has done better in that vein.

1982. Greatest year of film and filmmusic of my 54 years.

Post moved here:

Some photos, concert program and a report from the June 11 concert:

Yet another amazing night of music courtesy of Robert Townson, Varese Sarabande, the GSPO, and Steven Allen Fox, who performed a wonderful selection of scores from 1985. A few film music-related bucket list items were crossed off tonight: seeing Bruce Broughton conduct his own music from SILVERADO; seeing David Shire conduct his own music from RETURN TO OZ; experiencing the scores for COCOON, OUT OF AFRICA, REVOLUTION and THE GOONIES live. Watching David L Newman conducting a suite from Goldsmith's LEGEND was something I will never forget. Sara Andon's flute solo on Delerue's AGNES OF GOD was utterly transcendent. Paul Henning's violin solo on the John Williams-arranged suite from Quincy Jones's THE COLOR PURPLE was bewitching and beautiful. The fact that I am able to watch musicians and composers of the calibre of Lee Holdridge, Craig Safan, Jeff Beal, Joseph Trapanese, Conrad Pope, Brian Byrne, Cliff Eidelman, Benjamin Wallfisch and Christopher Lennertz showcase their talent and be in their element still amazes me, and I will never take for granted how lucky I am to live here and be able to experience this. Bravo to everyone involved.
