Popular Post karelm 2,913
Sad news, Gary Kurtz - producer of Star Wars A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back has died. Some (including me) would argue he was the heart and soul of the original trilogy and his omission from Return of the Jedi was felt. https://variety.com/2018/film/news/gary-kurtz-dead-dies-star-wars-1202954316/ RIP Chen G., crumbs, Tallguy and 1 other 3
Nick1Ø66 4,718
So sad to hear. Star Wars owes to much to Kurtz, and the series wasn't the same after he left. And he was a refreshing voice of honesty, cutting through GL's BS when talking about SW history. RIP Gary. The Force will be with you, always. crumbs and Chen G. 1
The Illustrious Jerry 3,356
Gary Kurtz will always be remembered as vital to the SW franchise, part of a project that allowed us to reach for the stars. Rest in peace always. crumbs
Holko 9,526
An important figure of motion picture history even with as few film credits as he had. He will be missed. Naïve Old Fart and crumbs
Naïve Old Fart 9,533
Sad news, indeed. Although I still like, ROTJ, it's obvious that it needed Kurtz, to make it fly. RIP.

RIP. I love ROTJ too but he argued against the cuteness and Ewoks for example. One could say he was the yin to Lucas's yang and the two needed each other. When Lucas was fully left to his own devices, the series suffered. I don't want to dismiss Lucas's creation but he lacked discipline that Kurtz brought. http://herocomplex.latimes.com/movies/star-wars-was-born-a-long-time-ago-but-not-all-that-far-far-away-in-1972-filmmakers-george-lucas-and-gary-kurtz-wer/
The Illustrious Jerry 3,356
Kurtz was the voice of reason in the franchise then. He's Lucas support beam and without him things just weren't the same. Great man too. He will be missed.
Drew 590
RIP. Am I correct that he did not continue with Star Wars because the studio didn't like him going over-budget with the first two?

The first one's budget ballooned, for sure, but TESB was financed, solely, by Lucas - sans studio interference. I'm not sure if TESB went over budget, but its full cost was kept hidden, for many years.

He was way more than a producer, he was active creatively and was even a second unit director on some of the quieter scenes which I frankly think are some of the loveliest moments in the series. Lucas and he different increasingly on the tone so they parted ways.
John 2,032
Legend. It’s a shame he won’t be able to see the end to the saga which he was such a crucial part of. Rest in peace.
