Koray Savas 2,259 Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 A little late this year. I honestly don't remember if I did it last year, of it's even the 4th time I've done it How it works? The first step is to pick the nominations. 5 scores, everything and anything is eligible. In the past I've excluded video games and TV shows, but since then they've been tossed into the mix as well.I'll put a time limit for 2 weeks, submissions for nominees will close on February 15th.Also, share with us your thoughts on the following:Score Of The YearAlbum Of The Year (Composed in 2011)Album Of The Year (Catalog Release)Composer Of The YearLabel Of The YearCue Of The Year

p0llux 434 Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 1. Ni no Kuni: Shikkoku no Madōshi - Joe Hisaishi2. War Horse - John Williams3. Tintin - John Williams4. The Artist - Ludovic Bource5. Super 8 - Michael GiacchinoHonorable mentions: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward SwordFor those unfamiliar with it, here's Ni no Kuni's main theme. It's an orchestrated video game soundtrack performed by the 90+ piece Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, unlike Skyward Sword's 50 piece. =P But Skyward Sword's OST wasn't bad at all either.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bH9cMIOQXMw&hd=1
p0llux 434 Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Wow. Sounds pretty damn good. Didn't know Hisaishi composed music for video games.ya, it's his first effort in the video game world. He approached this game like it was a film, which was why I think everything just sounds better. Highly recommended.

davros72 1 Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 May I play? In no particular order...Tintin (JW)HP and the Deathly Hallows Pt 2 (Desplat)Doctor Who Series 6 (Gold)Captain America (Silvestri)The Muppets (Beck)I haven't seen nearly as many films (or heard as many soundtracks) as I might have liked to in 2011... hence my extreeeeeemely limited selection. I'm sure War Horse would have made it, if I'd been able to give it a listen or see the film, probably would replace The Muppets with it. Oh, well.Bonus:Favorite archive release of 2011:Gremlins (Goldsmith) (FSM)(Runner-up: The Black Hole (Barry) (Intrada))
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 11,938 Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Album Of The Year (Composed in 2011)Tintin was composed in 2009 or 2010, with only some tweaking in 2011.This means the score is not eligible.
Jeff 10 Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 War Horse, Tintin, Super 8, and Deathly Hallows Part 2 would be on my list of nominees. Can we have a Razzies, as well? The most distracting score for me was X-Men: First Class.

Jay 45,402 Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Don't forget everyone you can go here to see all the 2011 releases from the labels so you can help decide catalog release of the year as well as label of the year:http://www.jwfan.com...showtopic=20226Album Of The Year (Rerelease)Re-release of the year doesn't make sense. Stuff like "Midway", "Nightwatch", "Wolfen" or "48 Hours" were never released before. Perhaps "catalog release of the year" is more appropriate

Mine would be:1. 1941 (LLL)2. Medal of Honor boxset (LLL)3. Midway (Varsese)4. Nightwatch (FSM)5. The Great Escape (Intrada)... so I guess my label of the year is La-La Land!Cue of the year: Holy fuck. Here's my top5 in no order:1. Letting Go - Super 82. Dartmoor, 1912 - War Horse3. The Evacuation of Lillian - Super 84. No Man's Land - War Horse5. The Adventure Continues - TintinIf I have to pick just one......................... shit. I guess Dartmoor, 1912. Thor 9,337 Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Cue Of The Year - I have no idea....maybe "Tick of the Clock" from DRIVEPretty sure that wasn't written for the film.Really? I thought it was, but now that I've done some research, I see that it's indeed a song by The Chromatics. Well, you learn something new every day. Then I have to pick "Dartmoor, 1912" from WAR HORSE instead.By the way, Koray, I also considered picking TREE OF LIFE, but the greatest musical pieces there were all existing classical pieces, so I didn't think it would qualify. Desplat's material are mostly binding material. But it's definitely one of, if not THE most powerful marriage of music and film in 2011.

Desplat's material are mostly binding material. But it's definitely one of, if not THE most powerful marriage of music and film in 2011.It's the most powerful marriage of music and film since The New World There was probably 3 minutes of Desplat in the final cut, but on album I find his "inspired by" score to work beautifully on its own.
Richard P 5,145 Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 1. War Horse (Williams)2. The Ides of March (Desplat)3. Water for Elephants (JNH)4. Deathly Hallows Pt 2 (Desplat)5. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Desplat)I've just realised what an amazing year Desplat has had! Although really it's also in context of some really unmemorable scores generally.Score Of The Year: War HorseAlbum Of The Year (Composed in 2011): War HorseAlbum Of The Year (Catalog Release): The X-Files: Volume OneComposer Of The Year: Alexandre DesplatLabel Of The Year: LaLaLandCue Of The Year: The HomecomingAll of the catalog releases I bought in 2011 apart from one were boxes, so that was a tough choice. But The X-Files is so impressive in the range of cues it offers.
crocodile 9,531 Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 I like Tree of Life, but including it in the score category seems a bit too far-fetched since so little of it had been actually used. And I'm not sure if it would serve the film all that well. But I like it as an album.Karol
Richard P 5,145 Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Has Malick ever used a score normally?Everything I read about his films are how little the album resembles the film in each case.
Koray Savas 2,259 Posted February 3, 2012 Author Posted February 3, 2012 He hires a composer and works with them extensively during production, but ends up dumping most of their work in favor of classical music because that's usually what he writes to.
