rough cut reacted to Mr. Hooper in Poll: How would you rate Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (Film & Score)
I felt like walking out on the movie halfway through. It was tedious, Helena was obnoxious (and not in an endearing way), and the time travel element was silly and didn't pay off in any satisfying way. And I didn't relish seeing Indy as a shirtless, broken down man who drinks in the morning...
Musically, 'Helena's Theme' makes the score for me. The director was apparently worried that it was too lush. I kinda agree — it's too beautiful a theme for the character.

rough cut got a reaction from Sebastian David Schwittay in John Williams: Statements on album programs?
@Sebastian David Schwittay You have all JW’s liner notes collected here, but I cannot recall any one being on the subject of either album arrangements nor album programming.
Good luck!

rough cut got a reaction from crlbrg in ACROSS THE STARS - Williams / Mutter collaboration album
As many other JWfaners, the release of Helena's Theme featuring Anne-Sophie Mutter made me revisit Williams' previous arrangements for her. I had wanted to do a curated playlist for some time but it never seemed worth the hassle with the the limited number of releases that featured her work. Now, with four main releases available (Across The Stars, John Williams In Vienna, Violin Concerto No. 2 and Helena's Theme), I finally thought the time was right to put some effort into it.
I always thought the original track order on "Across The Stars" was a bit perplexing. As much as I love each individual piece in itself, the way it was put together never sat fully right with me. The fact that franchises weren't clustered together robbed the pieces of their thematic meaning a little bit.
While still retaining some of the track order from Mutter's album, a lot of my sequencing choices were inspired by the setlist of her 2019 concert in Munich, as well as Williams' 2020 concert in Vienna. Now, it plays in a way that makes some kind of sense - to me at least - and I consider it a very nice listening experience.
My playlist will undoubtably rub some people the wrong way due to the fact that it’s not chronological, but to be fair neither was the album "Across The Stars" nor any of the concerts mentioned above. The edit I included is also sure to irk some fans, but that’s easy to swap out for anyone who wants to use this.
01 - Star Wars The Force Awakens: Rey's Theme
02 - Star Wars Attack Of The Clones: Across The Stars
03 - Star Wars A New Hope: Princess Leia's Theme
04 - Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back: Han Solo And The Princess
05 - Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back: Yoda's Theme
06 - Star Wars Return Of The Jedi: Luke And Leia
07 - Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone: Hedwig's Theme (Single Version)
08 - Sabrina: Theme From "Sabrina"
09 - Memoirs Of A Geisha: Sayuri's Theme
10 - Memoirs Of A Geisha: The Chairman's Waltz
11 - Far And Away: Donnybrook Fair
12 - The Witches Of Eastwick: Devil's Dance
13 - Raiders Of The Lost Ark: Marion's Theme
14 - Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny: Helena's Theme
15 - Schindler's List: Theme From "Schindler's List"
16 - Schindler's List: Remembrances
17 - Dracula: Night Journeys

rough cut reacted to AOP in John Williams: Live in Vienna - Japan reissue with 3 bonus tracks!
The CDs have arrived with the bonus “printed signature” postcards!
To be honest, the printed signature postcards don’t look great. They’re quite pixelated - refer to attached pic.
I’ll be contacting the 5 people who reached out for a copy soon. I ordered 2 extra in case any other JW fans are interested! (Edit: these have now been claimed!) Otherwise, I’ll put them up on eBay.
Also, I added a pic comparing the cover of the previously released SACD “live edition” and this new “special edition.” The internal contents of the booklets are practically identical except for the added info about the 3 bonus tracks. Oh, and the liner notes are in Japanese only… sorry!
From a quick listen on my Sennheiser headphones and Onkyo CD player, I’d say that the bonus tracks are of similar sound quality to the already released tracks.

CD has also arrived in Germany (from CD Japan)!
Without (the distraction of) the printed signature...;-)
The jewel case is thicker (deeper) than usual.
There are currently 4 in stock @ CDJapan : John Williams - Live In Vienna (Special Edition) [Hi-Res CD (MQA x UHQCD)] John Williams CD Album

rough cut reacted to Thor in The ALIEN FRANCHISE Appreciation thread.
I envy your experience of being there at the time of release, and seeing it in the theatre for the first time. My story is a few years later. I was younger than you at the time. Around 11-12 years old, ca. 1989. I was already getting into horror, sci fi and films in general, and had noticed ALIEN being shown on Norwegian telly a few times in the last couple of years, but never been allowed to see it. This particular night, it was shown on Norwegian TV again. I argued my case, my mom was against it. It was too late in the evening, and I was too young, she said. My dad, on the other hand, said I could take it, and in this case he won the argument.
Well, both were right, in a way. It's one of the most traumatic film experiences in my life. At the same time, it ignited my whole interest in film in a serious way; I wanted to know HOW and WHY a film could have such a profound effect on me, what were the tools? So obviously hugely important in defining who I am today, and my whole choice of profession.
Suppose we all have stories like these.

rough cut got a reaction from Brando in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (Disney Records Original Soundtrack Album) - NO FILM SPOILERS!
Since a big part of the movie takes place in 1969, wouldn't have been cool if the John Williams had cameo'd some of his earlier soundtracks from that decade? It could have given a kind of authentic sparkle to the time period the movie is set in and would have been a hoot for any JW fan to discover!

rough cut got a reaction from Brando in Did you get the Dial of Destiny soundtrack on the CD format before it sold out?
Isn’t it pretty clear by now that this isn’t a limited edition? At least not in the traditional sense. Disney will keep pressing a few copies every so often until sales go down enough that it isn’t profitable to stock anymore and then they’ll let it go OOP.
That’s my guess at least.
Anyway, who here among all JWfaners want to confess to being the disgruntled editor of The Dial Of Destiny OST’s Wikipedia page? Might be time to change it…

rough cut got a reaction from Chewy in Spotify
I get that it looks neat, so I totally respect anybody who thinks this is a cool feature. I just don't need that kind of branding in spotify and I almost find it invasive in my music experience, when I want to focus on the music from a music fan-perspective, rather than from a Star Wars-fan perspective. Also, it's a little bit annoying that "zero" isn't at the same starting point due to that the progress bar has to "shrink", leaving space for the saber.
But I get that this might be a minor complaint, and I'm probably in a minority to find it annaoying. So no offense to anyone. Just got annoyed by it and needed to vent. Thanks for listening.
@Jay Thanks for the tip, but clicking the lightsaber doesn't turn it off - it just switches between different sabers. I've tried many times. I can live with it.

rough cut got a reaction from michael_grig in AHSOKA - 2023 Star Wars TV
The first two episodes were a pleasant surprise! It felt very Star Wars-y. The music, no doubt, played a big part in this. His music was one of the things that made Rebels stick out and ground it self as not “just” an animated show for kids - and he totally kicks ass here. Om not too familiar with the material, so the themes don’t stick out to me (yet), but it fits right into the sonic universe that Williams created.
Also, good to see a script that handles female characters (three of them!) without being “in your face” as many other TV shows handle women.
My only complaint is that I thought the actors for Sabine and Hera were a bit wooden and distracting to watch, I didn’t really buy their performance but hopefully they’ll grow into their roles.

rough cut reacted to Mr. Hooper in SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE - 3CD Set from La-La Land Records
I got the Intrada Jaws releases (Even Jaws: The Revenge!), which I'm not sure can be improved upon. But as Andy pointed out, anything's possible as technology improves.
As for Superman, I may just wait for a re-release from LLL rather than get gouged on eBay.

We were all over the moon about the Rhino set back in the day. The problem is, you never know how much better archival audio can get until somebody gives it to you!
The sound of the Superman OST on CD was dreadful, and Rhino was huge.
