Kaboom Kraassh! THWOCK!

Somebody posted this on YouTube as the worst fight scene ever.

:P

Several things struck me about this clip. Firstly, the first few seconds of the music remind me of Silvestri's music for Predator (luckily, the fight scenes in Predator didn't look like this). Secondly, yes it is hilariously slow and devoid of tension.

(but I enjoy Kirks extremely telegraphic kneck chops and judo throw scuffles, usually :) ).

Thirdly, one of the commenters just HAD to go against the grain and comment -

"This is a scene from the TOS star trek episode called the "Arena". Thinking they were taking in some R&R at outpost Cetus 3 the crew of Enterprise come under attack from an unknown race of beings who later became known as "Gorns". The story plot was that they were reptilian and cold blooded living on a high gravity planet thus larger but slower than humans. They fight scene was merely showing the trade off between light and agile creatures(humans)versus the heavy and lethargic"

Really? The need to 'inform' so seriously and to justify this clip somehow was even more hilarious. :P

(by the way, why does Kirk's reptilian opponent have a very obvious smoker's cough? ;) )

But that aside, this thread is actually a question.

What are your favourite fight scenes? (as in close quarters combat, not mass CGI Battles).

I think lots of the fight sequences in the

must rate highly as amazing for gritty reality style.

between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in Way of the Dragon/Return of the Dragon is a good one.

The prison fight (no YT video) between Billy Hayes and the slimy Turkish guy, in Midnight express. Tongue, anyone?

slugging it out with swords in Rob Roy.

was good for the sheer rage coming from Hercules.

I love the fight scenes in the early Jackie Chan Kung Fu flicks, for the comedy factor. Hilarious stuff.

Commodus and Maximus in Gladiator? Devoid of music and just slugging it out. Emotional ending.

Anyway, I don't want to mention too many and will give you a chance to share.

( I already know what Hitch is going to post :) )

It's not exactly realistic, but for sheer entertainment value Errol Flynn vs. Basil Rathbone in Robin Hood has yet to be topped.

Bond vs. Grant (and also the incredibly tense build-up to the fight) in From Russia with Love is also a terrific sequence.

Harrison Ford's fights with Pat Roach in the first two Indiana Jones films are pretty good.

And the fight in Marion's bar earlier on in Raiders.

Not all these are "fight" scenes, I think I'll just list my favorite "action" scenes:

- Desert Chase

- Basket Game*

- Mine Car Chase

- most of the lightsaber battles in SW Saga*

- The kitchen scene in Jurassic Park

- The T-Rex/car scene in Jurassic Park*

- The trailer/cliff scene in The Lost World*

- Wheel of Fortune in PotC: DMC*

- The maelstrome battle in PotC: AWE

Jack and Barbosa's swordfight in Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. Well choreographed and edited - sadly the last case for the series.

Dumbledore versus Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Nothing like I imagined, but tense and scary nonetheless. having no music was an excellent idea.

Buffy fighing Glory in the season 5 finale The Gift. With a freaking troll hammer. And also her fights with Faith.

Mal's fight with The Operative in Firefly - so heavy and harsh and painful, especially when juxtaposed with...

River fighting the Rievers. Also knocking out an entire bar earlier in the film.

The fight scenes in Godzilla vs. Biollante. I remember first seeing this when I was about 8-years-old being at the edge of my seat thinking that the weakened Godzilla was probably gonna be wasted by this massive thorned beast that looked about four times his size!

I just thought of another great one.

The fight scene between Budd (Ed Harris) and Lt.Coffey (Michael Biehn) in The Abyss (1989)

Really raw, using knives, brute strength, iron bars, and a chain. Silvestri's score in this scene was good too.

Unfortunately nobody has put it up on YouTube, but you can see a glimpse of it in the trailer at 2:20 on YT

The best-choreographed scene I have seen in any movie would have to be the final battle/wedding in PotC3.

Yeah, there are some truly good stuff scenes in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. I also like Anderton's escape from Minority Report, both out in the streets and inside the factory.

Definitely. The flying wing fight is incredible.

Bruce Wayne's prison yard scrap at the beginning of BATMAN BEGINS is excellent.

A nod has to be given to Star Wars as well. I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned any of the lightsaber duels.

Oh yes. Amazing classic.

El Cid has a rather exciting joust sequence if I remember correctly... ah yes!

He actually ends up using his saddle as a shield. :P

And this sequence where he takes on 13 knights almost all by his lonesome. Usually when the hero takes on multiple enemies at once, it's dumbed down and unbelievable. But here it really makes me believe he actually did it. Incredible. And also brilliantly scored.

I also agree with Mr. Lewis on the MR sequence. And The Pirates of The Caribbean, which has many fight scenes laced with the personalities of the combatents, not a very common thing in fight scenes.

The final duel from Rob Roy is high up there for me. Otherwise, I'm drawing a blank. Only other one that comes to mind at the moment (although it is really a chase scene, not a fight scene), is the African Run from Casino Royale. One of my favorite action seqeunces ever.

Raiders of the Lost Ark[i/] boasts a great fight. Temple of Doom, not so much. The problem I have with the fight in TOD is that Pat Roach as at first invincible, and then suddenly he morphs into a wimp, once the kid starts stabbing the doll. At least in Raiders, you had a somewhat smooth progression from initial intimidation to Indy slowly fighting his way back. The growling (and the blood!) at the end of the Raiders fight is a great touch. Very intense.

The best fight scene I've seen in recent years is the bath house scene from Eastern Promises. It's the anti-Boure. You see everything in naked detail -- big pun intended. I am not a huge fan of the new quick-cut, shaky-cam aesthetics of the last two Bourne movies.

I really must see Eastern Promises again. First time around, I felt it was lacking meat, and al the other good films from late 07' crowded it out of my mind...I don't think I'll come to like it quite as much as you did, Ted, but I have a nagging feeling that it's better than I gave it credit.

So I've read. BTW, Are you gonna get around to posting some thoughts on other films you caught up with? I'm very interested in hearing your take on Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford, and am interested in hearing why you disliked Lust, Caution.

That I'm not a terribly huge fight scene junkie in the first place may explain my predilection for the lickety-split cutting exemplified in Greengrass's Bourne films. Clarity and coherence may go out the window -- a fatal sacrifice for those who feel those elements are essential to any scene -- but for me the loss is minimal; the uptick in visceral intensity, immeasurable.

Boring fight. I can think of very few boxing-matches that are especially memorable. Raging Bull is about it. Well, I can recall Cinderella Man, but I saw it recently, and I'm really rememboring the score more than the fight itself.

little known 1992 film called The Perfect Weapon with Jeff Speakman (kempo practitioner) in a dojo fighting 3 tae kwon do guys. Between the editing and the fast precise moves of kempo karate, it's one of the coolest fight scenes I have scene.

Brad Pitt did NOT turn Hercules into a surfer dude too!

That's Achilles, not Hercules

"You better tell the cookie she should put that down....she's gonna cut all your fingers off"

Paul Newman and Wolfgang Kieling's fight in TORN CURTAIN.

William Shatner vs. William Shatner in STAR TREK VI

Sigourney Weaver vs. Alien Queen in ALIENS (Ok...she used a power loader to win....get over it!)

The bar fight in the middle of the "1941" will always remain one of Spielberg's gems as far as set pieces go.
