...I remember one of the shoparounds telling us no lap dances. WTF?! We're in 8th grade lady. No ones gonna start giving a lap dance in front of everybody.

Have you been to junior high dances lately? Some of them are one step away from being at a strip club.

"I listen to John Williams music" = Bully magnet

Posted

I felt rather isolated during most of my secondary school years due to my wildly different interests to everyone else. While everyone else wanted to escape class as quick as possible and go to play football, I just preferred to... do work

It takes very specific company and circumstances for me to enjoy social interaction (given exactly the right circumstances and company, I'm the last person you'd think was an introvert), and I seem to have a hard-coded fear of getting in any sort of physical trouble so it's easy to see why I was seen as a rather uncool geek who doesn't like to have any fun. I also have some very odd food dislikes which made me frequently turn down invitations for fear that I wouldn't like the food on offer.

So while I wasn't outright bullied, I was probably the least popular kid and teased quite a lot. When you add in my lack of drinking/partying and a recent infatuation for film music, secondary school really didn't do much for me. My last year of uni was actually my happiest year in a very long time due to plenty of course friends (only 15 and we went everywhere together, wasn't hard) and that I was among those who picked up the programming skills the fastest and could help others.

Not really.

So long as you're in band or orchestra

How do people find out you listen to John Williams? I never told anyone I listened to film scores, but it's not like I would deny it. There was one time a girl on the bus asked if I was listening to classical music. I said no, but technically I wasn't! IIRC I was listening to Backdraft.

That is the important thing to remember, have self confidence! I do not understand why I should feel embarrassed to admit that I listen to John Williams, Danny Elfman, Miklos Rosza , and so on and so forth. What makes their music any less "valid" than the Rap and Heavy Metal that I hear blaring through some of my peers' headphones? Nothing (except for perhaps contemporary culture, but that is another debate)!

And I do not like being around Band kids, that I can play without being able to read music irks them. The Orchestra kids - and only the kids, the teacher hates me- are far more accepting.

I read an interesting statistic once. 60% of all managers/bosses/etc. were labeled as bullies in school.

Should give you a strong idea of who we work for.

Was I bullied in school? Well, let me put it to you this way. There are only three people in the world I trust anymore: me, my son and my wife.

I absolutely can relate to that. If I learned something throughout all of the years of bullying, I learned to not trust anyone but myself, and to have no regard for authority (because they're useless/powerless). This subject is particularly pointy with me. I went to numerous schools through my childhood, and was inevitably taunted/abused at every one of them. I can remember being in elementary school, and wandering through the school halls alone, when everyone else had answered the bell (I must have been zoning out, ditching), and I could hear the teachers talking to their respective classes. Alone, I thought to myself that THIS was perfect, that I was truly safe, and if everyone around me turned to dust, then things would be good.

One thing else that's for sure: violence is like a hot potato. It keeps getting passed to you, and eventually you find someone to give it to.

In my experience, it isn't the powerlessness, but the cluelessness. I've become more rebellious lately against any rules that are blatant overreactions, instrusions into privacy, or just plain pointless. No wearing coats inside the school building... what the hell for?

Our head of year decided to try to ban eating/drinking within 1 mile of the school to avoid littering. Well I live in the same road as the school and he wasn't telling me what to do just outside my own house.

You seem to all be yanks and a few poms who copped it so bad in school. Is it that bad over there?

I just hated school because I hated being locked up in a building with a 3 o'clock deadline to escape because I was always sooooooo sleepy throughout the day because I always went to bed at about 2am.

Well in high school everyone knew who John Williams was because our band director always designed his shows around Williams and Souza. In Jr. High most of my friends though it was cool that I had soundtracks and in elementary school I was just gettting started with film scores.

Of course it helps to have other interests as well to sorta blend in with everyone. The hard thing for me was due to the fact my dad was in the military and we moved around so I only spent 2-3 years in one place.

The details of my life are quite inconsequential.... Very well, where do I begin?

My childhood was typical: summers in Antananarivo... morris dancing... In the spring, we'd make clam castanets...

When I was insolent I was placed in a tesco carrier bag and beaten with bic biros — pretty standard, really.

At the age of 12, I received my first Williams CD. At the age of 14, a Wiccan named Mick massaged me with carrot juice.

there really is nothing like carotene saturation — it's breathtaking... I suggest you try it.

I refuse to teach middle school. That age group is the worst - hormones are raging and they have absolutely no control over them. I'll take high school over that any day.

That's funny, because I would say I met 2 of my favorite teachers (one in 6th grade, one in 8th grade) during my middle school period. It was still hell, though, but they kind of got me through it.

And look at you now! You didn't do too badly now, did you? ;)

no not at all :)

im not one of those people that says 'oh I had a bad childhood' and all that, using it as an excuse for everything. best thing to do is to just move on and forget it happened (easier said than done though).

I think a lot of the bullying we went through had to do with our talents. We're artist and we're more sensitive people and I think we're more "in touch" - however you want to define that - and I don't think people understand that.

But, I know I learned very early on that when push comes to shove, people are only looking out for one person - themselves. You will be bitten and you better be ready to bite back.

I used to be. Now I don't give a eff.

Would you blast out John Williams or Hans Zimmer with your windows open?

Posted

No because I would get a ticket.

I don't blast any music out of my window. I get annoyed when all I hear is thumpa thumpa thumpa coming from anyone's car / house because they have the volume cranked really loud so I wouldn't turn around and do it.

My CDs are in the open, anyone who comes into my house will see them. Most people seem impressed when they see them.

My wife and I do. Well, not Zimmer.

I didn't mean from a car and certainly not that loud.

I meant hot summers day, lawnmowers buzzing around and people barbecuing sort of loud...

I live in a townhome and my neighbor does just that. I used to not get too annoyed by it until my son was born. What gets me is that he does it and he has a 2 year old living there!!! They divorced not too long ago and he only does it when he comes to visit so I think he does it more to get people mad at his ex, who still lives in the townhome.

I hope so. It'd remind me of Bruce Dern in THE 'BURBS.

Depends on the company I'm with. If I have a few of my friends over, who are score lovers, then we'll listen to JW. If it's a more social setting with a larger group then no, I'll probably have more contemporary music such as rock or whatever playing.

And I live in Texas so I don't have the windows open, especially on a hot summer day.

I can't open my window, period. Who ever designed the windows in this apartment complex aught to be shot. The way how they're designed is you have to open them up from the bottom. However because the cable for the TV is running through it I can't put a screen there to open it. The apartment management wouldn't let DirectTV drill through the walls don't ask me why that was just the rule.

Yes I would, but I can't play my iPod in my car, so I don't. I blast Classic Rock 94.7

Posted

I blasted Howard Shore today in the car (TTT disc 1), but the air is chilly driving at 65 mph in the mid 50's with the windows and moon roof open, so they stayed firmly shut.

I enjoy getting the stares. My brother blasted Pirates once and at a red light some other guy was like "Yeah Pirates!"

Whoa, I just had a flashback to riding around a college campus in a friend's car, when he decided to roll down his windows and blast "Battlestar Galactica" by Stu Phillips. That may sound cool on paper, but in practice.....

Hilariously, me and my best friend (someone who is mostly indifferent to film music) once pulled up at the traffic lights at my town centre's extremely busy main junction, windows wound down. He had a VERY beefy sound system. It was a lovely sunny day and pedestrian shoppers were all around us.

LET ME TELL YOU OF THE DAYS OF HIGH ADVENTURE...! <----Conan main theme FULL volume.

I remember one day I was out running some errands and a car came driving past me with Titanic blasting out the windows.

2 guys.

That's surprising.

Not that there's anything wrong with it...

I was in the class clown group at school always making fun of people. I was never bullied physically as I am pretty tall and always have been taller than most people.
